Global health leadership training in resource-limited settings: a collaborative approach by academic institutions and local health care programs in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Due to a limited health workforce, many health care providers in Africa must take on health leadership roles with minimal formal training in leadership. Hence, the need to equip health care providers with practical skills required to lead high-impact health care programs. In Uganda, the Afya Bora Global Health Leadership Fellowship is implemented through the Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) and her partner institutions. Lessons learned from the program, presented in this paper, may guide development of in-service training opportunities to enhance leadership…

Global systematic review of how climate change degrades the wellbeing and health of Indigenous children.

BACKGROUND: Climate change worsens global health, with Indigenous children among the most vulnerable. Despite increasing research on climate-related health impacts, Indigenous children's unique vulnerabilities remain underrepresented. This is the first review to synthesise systematically the global evidence on how climate change impacts the health of Indigenous children. METHODS: We consolidated reported health outcomes directly caused by climate change in Indigenous children. We adhered to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and followed a r…

The power of the social: A systematic review and meta-analysis of social interventions in Global Mental Health.

Recent scholarship has emphasised the importance of social interventions in mental health, broadly defined as interventions designed to deliver social benefits that drive positive mental health consequences to their beneficiaries. While more is understood about the impact of some types (i.e., social-relational interventions) globally, impacts of social interventions addressing broader systemic and material conditions linked to mental health, such as poverty and access to welfare systems, are less understood. Addressing this evidence gap is critical for advancing a holistic agenda in the global

A validation defense of the 10-item PROMIS Global Health scale in lumbar decompression surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To date, the 10-item Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System Global Health (PROMIS GH) scale has not been validated for use in lumbar decompression surgery. Therefore, this study was performed to validate the scale and identify minimum clinically important differences (MCIDs) in PROMIS GH global physical health (GPH) and global mental health (GMH) domain scores in this patient population. METHODS: A prospectively collected quality improvement registry was retrospectively reviewed. PROMIS GH scores were obtained at baseline and 12 months postoperatively from patients…

Research priorities for data science and artificial intelligence in global health: an international consensus exercise.

Applications of data science and artificial intelligence (AI) in global health are expanding, yet research remains fragmented and often misaligned with the needs of low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). To address this misalignment, we conducted a global research priority-setting exercise using the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative (CHNRI) method. 155 research ideas were scored by 51 experts based on feasibility, potential impact on disease burden, paradigm shift potential, implementation potential, and equity. Top-ranked priorities focused on epidemic preparedness, incl…

Wèrè and the Ontological Politics of Global Mental Health: Distributed Cognition in Yorùbá Traditional Medicine.

Global mental health initiatives increasingly replace indigenous diagnostic categories with neuropsychiatric frameworks, framing this as anti-stigma progress. Drawing on twenty years of ethnographic research with traditional healers in southwestern Nigeria and my position as both researcher and practitioner, this paper examines wèrè-the Yorùbá term for mental illness-to reveal fundamental ontological incommensurability between Western personalistic medicine and Yorùbá ecological-cosmological healing. Through linguistic analysis, micro-phenomenological interviews, and participant observation, I

Integrating sexual and reproductive health education with sports for young people: a global scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Providing sexual and reproductive (SRH) health education to youth can improve outcomes including knowledge of sexually transmitted infections and use of condoms. Programs integrating soccer and sexual health education have shown promise in improving HIV-related outcomes in African countries; however, little is known about programs in other regions of the world, using other sports, or focusing on other SRH outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of this scoping review is to identify and compare a broader spectrum of integrated programs and their outcomes. METHODS: Four databases were sear

Beyond the Mosquito: Social Determinants of Health and Global Strategies for Aedes-Borne Disease Control.

BACKGROUND: Aedes-borne diseases, including dengue, chikungunya and Zika, have emerged as a growing global health concern, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Their spread is not only driven by biological and environmental factors but also shaped by a wide range of social determinants of health (SDH). This systematic review synthesizes available evidence on SDH that shape the transmission, prevention and control of these diseases, as well as the strategies implemented internationally to address them. METHODS: We conducted five systematic reviews following PRISMA guidelines, each…

Podoconiosis: Review of this Unusual Cause of Lower Extremity Lymphedema and its Global Health Burden.

Podoconiosis, or non-filarial elephantiasis, affects nearly 4 million people globally, primarily in regions with volcanic red clay soil. Characterized by lower extremity lymphedema from prolonged barefoot exposure to irritant soil particles, it causes significant economic losses, including $200 million annually in Ethiopia. While its pathogenesis is unclear, genetic predisposition (HLA expression), inflammatory responses, and altered skin microbiota are implicated. Prevention focuses on footwear and hygiene, though these are costly. The stigma surrounding visible symptoms highlights the need f

Global analysis reveals persistent shortfalls and regional differences in availability of foods needed for health.

Sufficient food is available in the world for all people to consume sufficient calories, but not healthy diets. This study traces historical and projected changes in global food systems toward alignment with the new Healthy Diet Basket (HDB) used by UN agencies and the World Bank to monitor the cost and affordability of healthy diets worldwide. Using the HDB as a standard to measure adequacy of national, regional and global supply-demand balances, we find substantial but inconsistent progress toward closer alignment with dietary guidelines, with large global shortfalls in fruits, vegetables, a

The JN.1 variant of COVID-19: immune evasion, transmissibility, and implications for global health.

The emergence of the COVID-19 JN.1 variant has raised global health concerns as it gains prevalence in several regions worldwide. First identified in August 2023, JN.1 evolved from the Omicron lineage's BA.2.86 subvariant. Patients infected with JN.1 commonly exhibit symptoms such as sore throat, fever, dry cough, nausea, and vomiting. While the World Health Organization has labeled JN.1 a Variant of Interest, it currently presents a low global health risk. However, its increased transmissibility, particularly in cold, dry climates, is concerning. This review provides a comprehensive overview …

Measles and rubella: From global health challenges to advancements in molecular diagnostics in the elimination era.

Measles and rubella are highly contagious viral infections with significant public health implications, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the availability of effective vaccines, these diseases continue to cause periodic outbreaks, contributing to substantial global morbidity, mortality, and economic burden. Immunization programs have drastically abridged disease incidence; however, gaps in vaccination coverage and surveillance systems deter complete elimination. The economic impact of outbreaks includes direct healthcare costs and indirect societal losses, emphasizing t

Challenges in Identifying and Diagnosing Asbestos-Related Diseases in Emerging Economies: A Global Health Perspective.

Background: Asbestos, a durable fibrous silicate once widely used for its thermal resistance, remains in use in countries like India and China despite being banned in over 70 nations and classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by IARC. Prolonged occupational exposure causes asbestosis, lung cancer, and malignant pleural mesothelioma, but in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) the true burden is underreported due to weak regulation, low awareness, limited diagnostics, and inadequate occupational health systems. Objectives: This review aimed to examine the epidemiological patterns and diagnostic
