On the allergenicity of Hev b 1 among health care workers and patients with spina bifida allergic to natural rubber latex.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have caused much controversy about the prevalence of IgE antibodies to Hev b 1 among health care workers (HCWs) and patients with spina bifida (SB) who are allergic to latex. This investigation was carried out to verify the results reported. METHOD: Serum samples from 140 patients with SB as well as from 105 HCWs allergic to latex were tested by enzyme allergosorbest test (EAST) and EAST-inhibition assay to evaluate the rate and degree of sensitization to highly purified Hev b 1. RESULTS: Eighty-one percent of patients with SB who were allergic to latex had IgE ant

Hand eczema in car mechanics.

To estimate the prevalence of hand eczema, a questionnaire was distributed to 901 male car mechanics. Of the 801 persons who responded, 15% reported hand eczema on some occasion in the previous 12 months, and 57% admitted dry skin on the hands. In a 2nd part of the study, those who reported hand eczema were examined and patch tested with a standard series and a special "car mechanics' series". The most common diagnosis was irritant contact dermatitis, 55%, and 2nd was allergic contact dermatitis, 19%. 35/105 (33%) had a total of 51 positive patch test reactions, all to substances in the standa

Intervention development in occupational research: an example from the printing industry.

BACKGROUND: Intervention development research is an essential prerequisite of any study that attempts to determine whether specific interventions work to prevent work related injury and illness. METHODS: Focus groups (n = 5) and direct observational studies (n = 21) of printers were used to elicit key issues that would aid the development of subsequent interventions. Transcripts from these were analysed by standard qualitative methods to identify common and related themes. RESULTS: The views of managers differed significantly from those of print workers in a number of areas, and working prac

Analysis of Gender-Dependent Personal Protective Behaviors in a National Sample: Polish Adolescents' COVID-19 Experience (PLACE-19) Study.

During the coronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the basic strategy that is recommended to reduce the spread of the disease is to practice proper hand hygiene and personal protective behaviors, but among adolescents, low adherence is common. The present study aimed to assess the gender-dependent hand hygiene and personal protective behaviors in a national sample of Polish adolescents. The Polish Adolescents' COVID-19 Experience (PLACE-19) Study was conducted in a group of 2323 secondary school students (814 males, 1509 females). Schools were chosen based on the random quota sampling proc

Streptococcus suis meningitis following occupational handling of imported frozen pork.

Streptococcus suis is a zoonotic pathogen primarily associated with pigs. Although most cases of S. suis infection in humans are associated with occupational exposure to live pigs or pork products, as well as consumption of raw pork, infection related to imported frozen pork has been documented in only a few reports. We report the case of a 65-year-old male cook with hand eczema who prepared meatballs daily with his bare hands by using frozen pork imported from Denmark. He developed a fever and headache and showed altered consciousness. Cerebrospinal fluid culture confirmed S. suis meningitis.

[Italian Society of Rheumatology (SIR) recommendations for performing arthrocentesis].

Joint fluid aspiration, or arthrocentesis, is one of the most useful and commonly performed procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases, but to date no definite guidelines have been published. For this reason, a group of experts of the Italian Society of Rheumatology (SIR) produced evidence based recommendations for performing arthrocentesis. Among them, the most relevant are: a) arthrocentesis is necessary when synovial effusion of unknown origin is present, especially if septic or crystal arthritis is suspected; b) the patient should be clearly informed of the benefits a

Occupational transdermal poisoning with synthetic cannabinoid cumyl-PINACA.

CONTEXT: Synthetic cannabinoids are getting more popular among young people and illicit manufacturers. We report a case series of occupational transdermal poisoning with synthetic cannabinoids. CASE DETAILS: Three customs inspectors got in contact with a sticky substance with their fingertips because they were not wearing protection gloves and the delivered package was damaged. Despite washing their hands with water, signs of synthetic cannabinoids intoxication started occurring half an hour after exposure. On arrival at the Emergency Department six hours later, they were somnolent, lethargic

Human Factors Risk Analyses of a Doffing Protocol for Ebola-Level Personal Protective Equipment: Mapping Errors to Contamination.

BACKGROUND: Doffing protocols for personal protective equipment (PPE) are critical for keeping healthcare workers (HCWs) safe during care of patients with Ebola virus disease. We assessed the relationship between errors and self-contamination during doffing. METHODS: Eleven HCWs experienced with doffing Ebola-level PPE participated in simulations in which HCWs donned PPE marked with surrogate viruses (ɸ6 and MS2), completed a clinical task, and were assessed for contamination after doffing. Simulations were video recorded, and a failure modes and effects analysis and fault tree analyses were

[The problem of cross infection and risk of infection for the practitioner].

Epidemiologic data show that in Belgium, the number of HIV-infected persons increases with an average of 3 a day. This increase will pose a real problem to all health workers including the dentists. The chance that the general dental practitioner comes in contact with HIV-infected patients will increase in the years to come. Therefore, each dental practitioner should have a scheme in his office to prevent cross infection. The transmission of HIV is analogue to HBV: blood, blood products, injury, wound, use of non-sterile instruments and needles... Transmission of HIV by saliva has not been pro

Effectiveness of using low rate fluoroscopy to reduce an examiner's radiation dose during lumbar nerve root block.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to radiation can lead to gene mutations and increase the risk of cancer. Low rate fluoroscopy has the potential to reduce the radiation exposure for both the examiner and the patient during various fluoroscopic procedures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of low rate fluoroscopy on reducing an examiner's radiation dose during nerve root block. METHODS: A total of 101 lumbar nerve root block examinations were performed at our institute during a 6-month period. During the first 3 months, low rate fluoroscopy was performed at 7.5 frames/s (FPS)
