Antibiotic resistance among Gram-negative rods (GNRs) causing hospital-acquired infections poses a threat, particularly to intensive care unit (ICU) patients. This study was undertaken in order to achieve the following: to detect the frequency of GNRs isolated from coronary and surgical ICUs at the Institute of Cardiology, Istanbul University, between January 2000-December 2002; to compare the resistance of these GNRs to selected antibiotics; and to determine the prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs). A total of 367 isolates were obtained from 171 patients. Susceptibility tes

Anthrax, an acute infectious disease of historical importance, is once again regaining interest with its use as a biological weapon. It is caused by B. anthracis, a Gram positive spore forming rod usually surrounded by a capsule and producing toxin. It occurs most frequently as an epizootic or enzootic disease of herbivores that acquire spores form direct contact with contaminated soil. Spores can survive for many years in soil. Animal vaccination programs have reduced drastically the disease in developed countries. In humans, the disease is acquired following contact with anthrax infected ani

The Soudan Underground Mine State Park, found in the Vermilion Iron Range in northern Minnesota, provides access to a ~ 2.7 billion-year-old banded iron formation. Exploratory boreholes drilled between 1958 and 1962 on the 27th level (713 m underground) of the mine intersect calcium and iron-rich brines that have recently been subject to metagenomic analysis and microbial enrichments. Using concentrated brine samples pumped from a borehole depth of up to 55 m, a novel Gram-positive bacterium was enriched under anaerobic, acetate-oxidizing, and Fe(III) citrate-reducing conditions. The isolated

The term neonatal sepsis is used to describe a generalized bloodstream infection of bacterial, viral, or fungal origin which is associated with hemodynamic changes and other clinical symptoms and signs, however, there is no unified definition. There are no basic criteria regarding differentiation of early-onset sepsis (EOS) versus late-onset sepsis (LOS). Stratification used in studies on neonatal sepsis also rarely includes the general condition of the newborn according to unambiguous assessment at birth, which hampers the establishment of a clear, uniform epidemiological description of neona

A novel mesophilic bacterial strain, designated S502T, was isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent at Suiyo Seamount, Japan. Cells were Gram-positive, asporogenous, motile, and curved rods, measuring 1.6-5.6 µm in length. The strain was an obligate anaerobe that grew fermentatively on complex substrates such as yeast extract and Bacto peptone. Elemental sulfur stimulated the growth of the strain, and was reduced to hydrogen sulfide. The strain grew within a temperature range of 10-23 °C (optimum at 20 °C), pH range of 4.8-8.3 (optimum at 7.4), and a NaCl concentration range of 1.0-4.0% (w/v

A bacterium was isolated from the blood and empyema of a cirrhotic patient. The cells were facultatively anaerobic, nonsporulating, gram-negative, seagull shaped or spiral rods. The bacterium grows on sheep blood agar as nonhemolytic, gray colonies 1 mm in diameter after 24 h of incubation at 37 degrees C in ambient air. Growth also occurs on MacConkey agar and at 25 and 42 degrees C but not at 4, 44, and 50 degrees C. The bacterium can grow in 1 or 2% but not 3, 4, or 5% NaCl. No enhancement of growth is observed with 5% CO(2). The organism is aflagellated and nonmotile at both 25 and 37 degr

BACKGROUND: Transitioning from intravenous (IV) to oral antibiotics upon clinical stability in gram-negative rod (GNR) bloodstream infections (BSI) in immunocompetent patients is effective, with comparable clinical success rates as IV therapy. Studies have historically excluded solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. This study aims to describe the clinical outcomes of SOT patients who transitioned to oral therapy to manage GNR BSIs.
METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort was conducted at the Medical University of South Carolina Health between January 2018 and August 2023. SOT reci

The giant snakehead, Channa micropeltes, is an increasingly important economic freshwater fish in Thailand and other regions of Asia. Presently, giant snakehead are cultured under intensive aquaculture conditions, leading to high stress and conditions favouring disease. In this study, we reported a disease outbreak in farmed giant snakehead with a cumulative mortality of 52.5%, continuing for 2 months. The affected fish exhibited signs of lethargy, anorexia and haemorrhage of the skin and eyes. Further bacterial isolations revealed two different types of colonies on tryptic soy agar: small whi

Core-shell α-Fe2O3-ZnO structures of different nanotextured morphology were synthesized through wet chemical routes using different solvents like ethanol, ethanolamine, water and acetaldehyde. Morphological tuning using different solvents resulted in the formation of different shapes, such as disc, spindle, rod and sphere (abbreviated as FZ-ND, FZ-NSP, FZ-NR and FZ-NS, respectively). Structural, morphological and compositional characterization of these nanoparticles (NPs) has been carried out. Antibacterial efficacy of the synthesized NPs was checked against Gram negative V. cholerae N16961 (V

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter rectus is a gram-negative rod, and Parvimonas micra is a gram-positive coccus, both of which are oral anaerobes that cause chronic periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis can cause bacteremia and systemic diseases, including osteomyelitis. Hematogenous osteomyelitis caused by anaerobic bacteria is uncommon, and to date, there have been no reports of mixed bacteremia with C. rectus and P. micra. Here, we report the first case of osteomyelitis of the femur caused by anaerobic bacteria with mixed bacteremia of C. rectus and P. micra caused by chronic periodontitis.

Oral diseases, particularly dental caries and periodontal disease, pose significant global health challenges. The imbalance of the oral microbiota plays a key role in the occurrence of these diseases, prompting researchers to seek new strategies to restore oral ecological balance. Lactobacillus reuteri is a Gram-positive rod-shaped bacterium that exists in various body parts of humans, including the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, skin, and so on. This species has a potentially positive impact on oral health and plays an important role in maintaining systemic health. Recent studies have

OBJECTIVE: Actinobaculum schaalii can cause urinary tract infections (UTIs) and occasionally septic complications. It is a carbon dioxide-requiring Gram-positive rod which is overlooked if urine is cultured in ambient air or if there is growth of conventional species. This study aimed to find the frequency of A. schaalii in consecutive cohorts of patients with kidney stones, children with suspected UTI and patients with indwelling catheters.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was used to screen consecutive urine samples from of 76 patients wit

BACKGROUND: With the advent of multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using samples from a positive blood culture, the time required to identify a pathogen has significantly shortened to a few hours. It can help us select appropriate antimicrobial agents more quickly. The present study aimed to assess the impact of using a multiplex PCR blood culture panel on the appropriate administration of antimicrobial agents.
METHODS: Patients aged <16 years with culture-confirmed bacteremia at Tokyo Metropolitan Children's Medical Center were enrolled. A pre-intervention period (period I: December 20

A Gram-stain-positive bacterial strain, designated LMM-1653T, was isolated from a uterus swab from a Holstein Frisian dairy cow in the frame of a clinical sampling trial. The isolated strain, which showed a rod to coccoid shape, was catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, its closest relatives were Corynebacterium flavescens and Corynebacterium argatoratense (96.50 % similarity each), suggesting that this isolate represents a novel species. Strain LMM-1653T had a quinone system consisting mainly of menaquinones MK-8(H2) and MK-9(H2). The polar lipid

Microsporidia are increasingly recognized as opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised organ transplant recipients (OTR). Disseminated infection due to Encephalitozoon sp. is reported mainly in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients and rarely in HIV-negative OTR. The clinical spectrum ranges from keratoconjunctivitis, to pneumonitis, to acute kidney injury. The kidney is a common site for disseminated infection; however, specialized techniques are required for definitive diagnosis. We report the first case of disseminated Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection in an HIV-negative

Whipple's disease is a rare infectious illness that can affect any organ system in the body. It is caused by Tropheryma whipplei, a Gram-positive rod-shaped bacterium with a high G + C content, classified within the actinobacteria. For decades, laboratory detection has been based on microscopy and the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining of biopsies. Recently, PCR has become a useful tool to detect T. whipplei DNA in various clinical specimens. However, a positive PCR result does not confirm Whipple's disease as it has been shown that asymptomatic persons can harbor T. whipplei DNA. Since there
