Dust or disease? Perceptions of influenza in rural Southern Malawi.

Influenza virus infections cause between 291 243 and 645 832 deaths annually, with the highest burden in low-income settings. Research in high-income countries has examined public understanding of influenza, but there is little information on views and behaviours about influenza in low-income countries. We explored communities' ideas about the severity, causes, prevention and treatment of influenza in Chikwawa district, Malawi. We conducted 64 in-depth interviews with parents of children aged <5 years, and 7 focus groups with community health workers, parents, and traditional healers. Data wer

The barriers and enablers to achieving adequate calcium intake in young adults: a qualitative study using focus groups.

BACKGROUND: Despite the established benefits of calcium consumption, many young Australians are not meeting the recommendations for calcium intake. This is concerning because an adequate calcium consumption is important throughout young adulthood to reach peak bone mass and for the prevention of osteoporosis. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the barriers and enablers to consuming calcium-rich foods with young adults. METHODS: Using a semi-structured question guide, five focus group discussions were conducted with 39 participants [mean (SD) age 22.5 (1.8) years]. Participants were

A qualitative study of the barriers to procedural sedation practices in paediatric emergency medicine in the UK and Ireland.

INTRODUCTION: There is extensive literature on paediatric procedural sedation (PPS) and its clinical applications in emergency departments (EDs). While numerous guidance and policy documents exist from international bodies, there remains a lack of uniformity and consistency of PPS practices within EDs. PPS is now gaining traction in the UK and Ireland and this study aimed to describe existing PPS practices and identify any challenges to training and provision of ED-based PPS. METHODS: A qualitative approach was employed to capture data through a focus group interview. Nine consultants in emer

Climate change and cerebrospinal meningitis in the Ghanaian meningitis belt.

Cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) is one of the infectious diseases likely to be affected by climate change. Although there are a few studies on the climate change-CSM nexus, none has considered perceptions of community members. However, understanding public perception in relation to a phenomenon is very significant for the design of effective communication and mitigation strategies as well as coping and adaptation strategies. This paper uses focus group discussions (FGDs) to fill this knowledge lacuna. Results show that although a few elderly participants ascribed fatal causes (disobedience to g

Knowledge and attitude towards zoonoses among animal health workers and livestock keepers in Arusha and Tanga, Tanzania.

Zoonoses are infections naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and humans. An exploratory questionnaire-based survey of animal health workers(n=36) and livestock keepers(n=43) was carried out from April 2001 to March 2002 in Tanga and Arusha regions, northern Tanzania, to assess local knowledge, attitudes and public awareness for animal zoonoses. A combination of closed and open-ended questions, focus group discussions and ranking techniques were employed to gather information on perceptions concerning the type of zoonotic diseases prevalent in the study area, level of risk, mode of

English- and Spanish-speaking Latina mothers' beliefs about food, health, and mothering.

Parent beliefs regarding food, health, and child feeding behaviors among Latinos have not been well-documented. A series of eight focus groups were conducted with English-speaking and Spanish-speaking low-income Latina mothers of preschoolers to investigate their beliefs regarding how food and food preparation are related to their children's health and to their own roles as mothers. Systematic content analysis using NUDIST 6 revealed seven themes discussed by the focus groups. Integration of these themes revealed three major areas of consideration: (1) a lack of connection between the domains

[Treatment of social phobia in childhood and adolescence].

OBJECTIVES: The following article investigates the extent to which the current status of cognitive behavioral research on the treatment of socially phobic children and adolescents is reflected by the currently used guidelines for psychotherapy. METHODS: The current literature on research in psychotherapy was systematically reviewed. RESULTS: The results show the significance of single-setting treatment, of cognitive interventions, and of parental participation in the therapy. The results also show the limitations encountered if the treatment consists only of training social competence skills

Dental screening in schools: the views of parents, teachers and school nurses.

OBJECTIVES: To obtain insight into the views of relevant 'stakeholders' (parents, teachers and school nurses) in dental screening in schools. METHODS: Eight schools in Chester and Ellesmere Port in the UK formed the setting of this study. A teacher from each school participated in one-to-one interviews, and focus groups for parents were carried out in each school. A focus group for school nurses working in the locality was also held. The same trained researcher undertook the interviews and focus groups; all interviews and focus groups were tape recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically

Canadian dietitians' approaches to counseling adult clients seeking weight-management advice.

This study describes Canadian dietitians' approaches to counseling adults seeking weight-management advice. Fifteen focus groups were conducted at seven sites across Canada. The participants, most of whom worked in clinical or private practice, discussed their approach to specific weight-management counseling scenarios, including women clients with and without associated risk factors (impaired glucose tolerance, hypertension, family history of cardiovascular disease) and long histories of dieting. Results indicate that participants used a lifestyle approach for weight-management counseling, wh

A community-based study of parents' knowledge, attitudes and beliefs related to childhood injuries.

This study assessed parents' knowledge of injury risks for children, attitudes within children's injury-risk behaviours, and beliefs related to a number of aspects of childhood injuries. Parents completed questionnaires and participated in discussions using scenarios depicting child-injury situations that involved a parent and child. Results indicated that parents view injuries largely as a natural consequence of childhood and they believe children learn about risk avoidance from injury experiences. Parents' responses did not indicate a strong belief that injuries to children are preventable o

External Apical Root Resorption in Orthodontic Patients Who Practice Combat Sports: A Case-Control Observational Pilot Study.

Orthodontic treatment could lead to undesirable effects such as external apical root resorption (EARR). Moreover, trauma to both the face and teeth can predispose to EARR. On the other hand, the practice of combat sports results in increased maxillofacial injuries. Consequently, our objective was to determine if there is a statistically significant difference in the EARR of the patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment who practice combat sports and controls. Our null hypothesis was that there is no difference in the EARR between patients undergoing orthodontic treatment who practice com

Effect of Peer Comparison Feedback and Professional Norms on Vitamin D Testing and Generic Medication Prescribing.

BACKGROUND: Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) estimates suggest that 20% of health care spending is wasteful or even harmful. Previous interventions have had limited success in discouraging low-value care in medical practice. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide randomized controlled trial among primary care physicians (PCPs) in Switzerland (November 2020-December 2021). We randomly assigned PCPs to one of three intervention groups related to low-value care (vitamin D testing, generic prescribing, or a cost intervention) or a control group. Adolescents and Young Adults With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Qualitative Barriers and Facilitators to Guideline-Concordant Care.

IntroductionProgress in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) affecting adolescents and young adults (AYAs), aged 15-39 years, has been challenged by aggressive disease biology, low clinical trial participation, unique supportive care needs, and heterogeneity across treatment settings with lack of age-based standardized therapy. In 2012, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) first issued AYA ALL treatment guidelines. In the absence of formal evaluation of the 2012 NCCN guidelines on the delivery of guideline-concordant care at National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Oncology Research
