Halitosis affects a large proportion of the population and is, in most cases, caused by the production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), particularly methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide, by specific bacterial species colonizing the oral cavity. In this study, a supercritical extract of Chinese licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), and its major isoflavans, licoricidin and licorisoflavan A, were investigated for their effect on growth, VSC production and protease activity of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia and Solobacterium moorei, which have been associated with halitosis. The…

It is now generally accepted that the volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulfide are the main contributors to halitosis when of oropharyngeal origin. The VSCs hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan are the major causes of bad breath in oral malodour whereas dimethyl sulfide is generally the major cause of bad breath in extra-oral halitosis. To facilitate research in the field of halitosis, it is highly advantageous to be able to preserve breath samples for longer periods of time before measurement of the VSCs, e.g. for sampling patients at home or w…

BACKGROUND: The incidence of halitosis has a prevalence of 22-50% throughout the world and is generally caused by anaerobic oral microorganisms, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum, Clostridium perfringens, and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Previous investigations on the structure-activity relationships of ginsenosides have led to contrasting results. Particularly, the antibacterial activity of less polar ginsenosides against halitosis-related bacteria has not been reported.
METHODS: Crude saponins extracted from the Panax quinquefolius leaf-stem (AGS) were treated at 130°C for 3 h to obtain heat-tra…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of volatile sulfur compounds(VSC) in oral cavity of preschool children, and to analyze related factors, thus to provide scientific basis for the prediction and treatment of halitosis.
METHODS: The VSC content (hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide) of 170 preschool children (4 to 6 years old) was detected by a portable gas chromatograph OralChromaTM. The status of the oral health was evaluated. The living habits and other aspects were obtained through questionnaires from the children's parents. A soft package for social statistics versio…

AIM: To investigate the association between 11 oral conditions and oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thi … cal lesions (NCCL). Questionnaires recorded the following self-reported oral variables: xerostomia, halitosis, and perceived need for dental treatment. Structural Equation Models were used to assess the associations adjusting to demographic and behavioral variables.
RESULTS: 1022 individuals were analyzed. The overall OHIP mean equaled 9.2 ± 9.7 points. Xe …

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy of tulsi extract mouthrinse in reducing halitosis as compared to chlorhexidine and hydrogen peroxide mouthrinses using spectrophotometric analysis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: It was a parallel, single center, double blinded randomized controlled trial of 15 days duration. A total of 300 participants were screened, out of which 45 subjects those fulfilled inclusion criteria of age range 17-35 years were included in the trial. The participants were randomly provided with tulsi, hydrogen peroxide or chlorhexidine mouthwashes (control group) to use 10 ml twice dail…

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is an acquired outpouching of the mucosa and the submucosa through a point of weakness between the inferior pharyngeal constrictor and the cricopharyngeus muscles. It commonly presents with dysphagia, regurgitation, and halitosis. We retrospectively reviewed seven patients treated with open cervical surgery between 2010 and 2025. Six underwent diverticulectomy and cricopharyngeal myotomy, and one underwent diverticulopexy. The mean age was 59.4 years, and 85.7% were male. All patients experienced dysphagia, and regurgitation and halitosis were present in 42.8% each. …

Aim: Halitosis is the unpleasant odor emitted from the oral cavity during exhalation and phonation. Using oral care products containing specific probiotics and paraprobiotics, combined with lifestyle changes, this study is aimed at resolving the patient's altered breath odor. Case Report: A 49-year-old male patient suffered from retronasal discharge, bacterial plaque on the back of his tongue, and bad breath. He underwent a professional oral hygiene session, received instructions in proper home oral hygiene techniques, and was advised on appropriate lifestyle changes. The use of oral care prod…

We conducted the present study to determine which clinical parameters for diagnosing halitosis are most reliable in the development of an accurate prognosis for oral malodor treatment. Clinical evaluation included a questionnaire, oral examination and volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) measurement, and organoleptic test (OLT) at baseline. Ninety-two patients classified with oral pathologic halitosis were treated in a similar manner. Improved treatment outcome was defined as < 0.25 ppm of total VSC, < or = 2 OLT score, and < 30 on the "sad feeling" scale as subjective stress level by oral malodor …

Breath hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methyl-mercaptan (CH3SH) concentrations are used as quantitative indicators of halitosis. However, measurements of these gases in duplicate oral samplings often show poor reproducibility. To determine if this poor reproducibility is an artifact of the collection/analytical procedure or a true biological phenomenon, we used a standardized technique to collect from 20 to 30 oral gas samples at two-minute intervals from 11 healthy subjects. The samples were analyzed for sulfur gases and CO2. Sizable variations in H2S and CH3SH concentrations were not associated w…

INTRODUCTION: Oral hygiene (OH) forms a part of the patient's safety in the prevention of mechanical ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). … ) (GR). The VAP was identified following clinical, medical and microbiological criteria. The DP and halitosis were observed daily. Oral and pharyngeal swabs were collected during the first 5 days.
RESULTS: 147 patients were included. Mean age was 53.9±17.5. No significant differences were found in the VAP incidence between the two groups (OR=0.78; 95% IC, …

The clinical and microbiological effects of zinc ascorbate gel applied orally in cats were evaluated during a 42-day study period. Cats were divided randomly into two equal groups, with the treatment group (18 cats) receiving zinc ascorbate gel and the control group (18 cats) receiving a placebo (0.9% sterile saline). Clinical parameters evaluated biweekly included halitosis, plaque, calculus, and gingivitis. Aerobic and anaerobic bacterial cultures were obtained from cats in the treatment group at Days 0 and 42. There was a significant decrease in plaque, gingivitis, and anaerobic periodontal…

OBJECTIVE: An assessment of oral symptoms and signs in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
METHODS: Fifty-four patients with IBD, 34 with Crohn's disease (CD) and 20 with ulcerative colitis (UC) participated in the study. Forty-two patients without gastrointestinal disease or complaints attending the orthopedic clinic served as controls. Each patient completed a written questionnaire and was subjected to an oral examination.
RESULTS: The main findings of this study were the higher prevalence of halitosis (50% vs 10% P < 0.0008), nausea (30% vs 7%, P < 0.017) and reflux (regurgita…
