Occupational exposure to the risk of HIV infection among health care workers in Mwanza Region, United Republic of Tanzania.

During 1993, we collected data on knowledge of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission, availability of equipment, protective practices and the occurrence of prick and splash incidents in nine hospitals in the Mwanza Region in the north-west of the United Republic of Tanzania. Such incidents were common, with the average health worker being pricked five times and being splashed nine times per year. The annual occupational risk of HIV transmission was estimated at 0.27% for health workers. Among surgeons, the risk was 0.7% (i.e. more than twice as high) if no special protective measures

Occupational health risks from climate-related and infectious-disease stressors: A scoping review of worker safety and resilience.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review examines how climate-related stressors and infectious-disease conditions, including pandemic-related workplace disruptions, interact to influence worker health, vulnerability, and occupational resilience. The review focuses on shared exposure pathways, vulnerable worker populations, methodological patterns, policy gaps, and strategies for strengthening worker safety under compound hazards. Rather than treating pandemics as isolated events, the review uses pandemic conditions as a lens to understand broader, recurring occupational risks and to inform strategies fo

Association between workplace-level awareness of Age-Friendly Guidelines and occupational safety and health measures for older workers.

Although Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare established the "Guidelines for Ensuring the Safety and Health of Older Workers (the guideline)" in 2020, little is known about the awareness of the guideline. This study examined the associations between workplace-level awareness of the guideline and workplace characteristics, as well as the association between guideline awareness and occupational safety and health measures for older workers, including occupational accident-prevention measures and workplace accommodations. A questionnaire survey was conducted between October and November

Occupational hazard incident reporting systems in health facilities across sub-Saharan Africa: A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational hazards (OH) in healthcare facilities are common, with 1 in 10 healthcare workers experiencing a hazard each year. These hazards can be either biological, chemical, ergonomic, or radiation. Despite their occurrence, reporting of these hazards remains limited, with very little information available, especially from healthcare facilities. Also, there is limited information on incident reporting systems (IRSs), which can help capture, track, and monitor the occurrence of these hazards within health facilities. The absence of these systems results in inaccurate and incom

Predation, acceleration, and loss of control: a multilevel theoretical framework for algorithmic time politics and the occupational health of platform workers.

In platform labor, algorithms reshape workers' perception and control of time through mechanisms such as dynamic pricing, compulsory task assignment, time-limit compression, and real-time surveillance, giving rise to a novel power formation- "algorithmic time politics." Taking this concept as its analytical core, this article integrates Foucault's disciplinary theory, Rosa's theory of social acceleration, and Karasek's job demand-control model, supplemented by Bakker and Demerouti's job demands-resources model, to construct a multilevel theoretical framework linking algorithmic time control to

Asymptomatic kidney changes discovered during occupational health screening: age-dependent trends from a large cohort.

BACKGROUND: The urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) are key biomarkers for asymptomatic detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet their combined use in preventive screening-particularly among young adults-remains uncommon. This study evaluates CKD markers in a large occupational cohort, emphasizing the early renal alterations observed in the 19-30-year age group and their distribution across older age strata. METHODS: Between 2021 and 2024, 12 281 healthcare workers aged 19-71 years participated in an occupational health surveillance

Understanding health services and puberty for autistic adolescents and those with disability: A scoping review to inform occupational therapy practice.

INTRODUCTION: Puberty is a transitional period presenting challenges for autistic adolescents, adolescents with disabilities and their families. There are opportunities for occupational therapy to provide support to this cohort as adolescents navigate the complexity of puberty transition. However, there is a lack of published evidence and knowledge translation to guide practice. It is important to scope the literature to gain understanding of the pubertal experiences of autistic adolescents, adolescents with a disability, their families and services accessed for support. The aim of this scopin

Occupational exposure to lithium-nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide materials in lithium battery: Health risks and mechanisms of toxicity.

Lithium-ion batteries are indispensable in modern energy storage systems-including portable electronics, electric vehicles, and grid-scale applications-because of their high energy density, long cycle life, and low self-discharge. Among cathode materials, lithium-nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide (LiNiMnCoO2; NCM) is widely used because of its balanced electrochemical performance and strong commercial viability. With the rapid expansion of NCM production and recycling, concerns regarding occupational exposure and related health risks have increased. However, a comprehensive synthesis addressing th

Clinical, social, and occupational determinants of severe preeclampsia: a multifactorial case-control study on maternal health inequities in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Severe preeclampsia remains a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, particularly in settings with limited access to quality antenatal care. In Peru, structural inequalities, physically demanding informal labor, and psychosocial stressors may exacerbate the risk of severe preeclampsia; however, local evidence integrating clinical and social determinants is scarce. METHODS: An unmatched case–control study was conducted at a referral hospital in Ica, Peru, from 2018 to 2023. A total of 720 pregnant women were included: 237 cases with severe preeclampsia and
