A rare cause of left atrial mass: endometrial stromal sarcoma metastasis.

Endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS) are rare tumors of the uterus. The metastasis of ESS to the cardiac structures is extremely infrequent. Several cases of right-sided heart metastasis have been previously reported. To our knowledge, only one similar case is available in the published studies that presented with recurrent embolic strokes due to left atrial metastasis of ESS. In this report, we describe a 53-year-old woman with endometrial stromal sarcoma; she was referred to our hospital with subacute onset of severe dyspnea and a left atrial mass causing severe mitral stenosis.

A bunch of grapes in the left ventricle.

A 65-year-old man, heavy smoker, was admitted because of severe exertional dyspnea and vague chest pain for 2 weeks. A chest X-ray was taken and revealed a large mass in the left lung field (Figure 1). Cytological examination of the percutaneous needle aspiration of a lymph node in the anterior mediastinum revealed malignant epithelial cell nests which was strongly suggestive of squamous cell carcinoma. Transthoracic echocardiography was performed and revealed multiple mass-like lesions with central liquefactions in the left ventricle resembling a bunch of grapes.

Right ventricular metastatic melanoma 27 years after resection of the primary tumor.

This article is a case report of a 65-year-old white woman with a history of malignant melanoma, resected from her back in 1959. She presented 27 years later with right-sided heart failure and metastatic melanoma to her right ventricle. To the authors' knowledge, a large ventricular mass as the sole site of disease recurrence has not been described previously.

Moving right atrial mass associated with hepatoma. Two cases detected by echocardiography.

Hepatoma with right atrial (RA) metastasis is rare, and to our knowledge, the echocardiographic description of a RA mass associated with hepatoma has never been described. Herein we report two cases of hepatoma, whose two-dimensional echocardiograms demonstrated a RA mass protruding into right ventricle during diastole, mimicking RA myxoma. However, in contrast to RA myxoma, these RA masses could be traced to the inferior venae cavae, which were dilated and filled with tumor echoes. Since prompt diagnosis and removal of these RA masses might prevent sudden cardiac death, we advocate performing

Advanced extramedullary hematopoiesis with a marked increase in reticulin fibers and hemorrhage on various organs: the first autopsy case report.

Myelofibrosis is characterized by stem cell-derived clonal proliferation potentially resulting in bone marrow fibrosis. As the disease progresses, extramedullary hematopoiesis is frequently detected in the spleen and the liver but rarely in other organs. We report a case of a 68-year-old woman with myelofibrosis with a JAK2 mutation, showing extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) in various organs with a marked increase in reticulin fibers, and myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN)-related necrotizing crescent glomerulonephritis. She was admitted to our hospital owing to respiratory discomfort. Comput

Urgent Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery in a Patient with Postinfarction Angina and Active Myelomonocytic Leukaemia.

Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) is a myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm affecting the production and differentiation of the monocyte cell lineage. Cardiac surgery in the context of CMML poses challenges that are not routinely encountered. This is the first reported case in the literature of a patient with active CMML undergoing urgent on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting. A 68-year-old Caucasian man with a history of hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, hypothyroidism, and hypercholesterolaemia, who had been diagnosed by the haematologists with CMML a few months earlier but had r

Pleuropulmonary blastoma type III extended into the left atrium in a 16-month old boy.

Pleuropulmonary blastoma is an uncommon paediatric neoplasm. Approximately 300 cases have been reported. In seven tumours, extension involved the left heart. Type III occurs typically at ages 3 or 4 years. We report this very unusual case of extensive disease in a 16-month old male patient. Chest computerized tomography revealed a mass extending into the right hemithorax from the posterior mediastinum and propagating inside the left atrium through the right pulmonary veins. Echocardiography showed a huge flexible mass occupying almost all of the left atrium cavity and intermittently prolapsing

[Comparison of the clinicopathological characteristics of colorectal cancer between elderly and young patients].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinicopathological characteristics between elderly and young patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: A total of 727 patients with CRC treated between Jan 2003 and Dec 2005 were divided into elderly group (≥ 60 years old), middle-aged group (36-59 years old), and young group (≤ 35 years old). The clinicopathological characteristics of the 3 groups were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: The tumor occurred mainly in the rectum, sigmoid colon and ascending colon of the patients. The major initial symptoms included hemafecia and changes in bowel habits in the e

Calcified Amorphous Tumor of the Left Ventricle with Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation.

Cardiac calcified amorphous tumor (CAT) is a rare, benign non-neoplastic mass of the heart that is sometimes found due to embolic events. Most cases of CAT are treated with surgical removal to prevent future embolic events. However, the treatment strategy for CAT complicated by atrial fibrillation has remained to be determined. Here we report a case of left ventricular CAT complicated by paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) that was successfully treated with surgical removal and pulmonary vein isolation. Pulmonary vein isolation can be a simple and effective procedure for PAF, even during surg

Isolated metastasis of mediastinal carcinoid to the left ventricle: A case report.

Carcinoid tumors are uncommon neuroendocrine tumors that produce high levels of serotonin and are mainly located in the gastrointestinal tract and bronchopulmonary system but very rarely in the mediastinum. These are slow-growing tumors that most commonly present metastatic lesions in the liver, followed by the bones, lungs, and peritoneum. Solid cardiac metastases from carcinoid tumors have seldom been reported. In this case report, we present a patient with a rare localized metastasis in the left ventricle with an antecedent history of resected carcinoid tumor of the anterior mediastinum.

Rhabdomyoma of the right atrium: report of a case.

Rhabdomyomas are the most common primary cardiac tumors in childhood, and are considered to be congenital lesions. They are uncommon in adolescents and adults due to their tendency for spontaneous regression. Majority of them are located in the ventricular chambers, and are also associated with tuberous sclerosis. The indications for surgery include hemodynamic compromise and intractable arrhythmias. We describe a right atrial rhabdomyoma in a previously healthy 16-year-old girl who presented with palpitation and dizziness of recent onset. Postoperative evaluation had not revealed stigmata of

PQ segment depression in a patient with a benign atrial tumor.

A 56 year-old woman presented with palpitations. Her ECG revealed PQ segment depression and a prolonged QTc. Echocardiogram revealed a 2 x 3 cm right atrial mass. The pathological diagnosis was benign cardiac fibroma. Clinicians should remember that subtle ECG changes may reflect unusual structural changes in the heart.

[An unusual cause of complete atrioventricular block--a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Complete atrioventricular block is a serious disorder, since patients may be asymptomatic. However, it is an important risk for sudden cardiac death. CASE REPORT: A 48-year old male patient was admitted to the coronary care unit, due to recurring substernal chest pain. It was followed by fatigue, weakness and confusion, it lasted more than half an hour and occurred twice. Loss of consciousness did not occur. The patient had a tick bite two months earlier. Physical examination was unremarkable, except for low heart rate (50/minute) electrocardiogram showed a complete atrioventric

Artificial Neochordae for Tricuspid Valve Repair in Adults: A Review.

Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) neochordae are predominantly used for mitral valve repair (MVr), while the frequency of their employment in tricuspid valve surgery is not well assessed. We have performed a review of the available literature to verify incidence, indications, techniques, and outcomes of the use of artificial neochordae in a variety of tricuspid valve pathologies. We found a total of 57 articles reporting the use of ePTFE sutures in patients in whom tricuspid valve repair (TVr) was performed. From such articles, adequate information on the basic disease, surgical techniq

Tuberous sclerosis patient with neuroendocrine carcinoma of the esophagogastric junction: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare inherited disease with non-cancerous tumor growths in the skin, brain, kidneys, heart, and lungs. The co-occurrence of neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) with TSC is even rarer. There have been few reports on the relationship between TSC and neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), and fewer on the relationship between TSC and neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC), a subtype of NEN. This is the first reported case of NEC occurring at the esophagogastric junction in a patient with TSC. CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old woman visiting our hospital for the treatment of
