Splenectomy is considered standard surgical therapy in hereditary spherocytosis. The procedure is indicated in patients with severe anemia, recurrent hemolytic, and aplastic crises. The aim of the study was to assess treatment outcomes in patients with hereditary spherocytosis who underwent total or partial laparoscopic splenectomy. Fifteen patients aged 4-17 yr underwent laparoscopic splenectomy from 2009 to 2012. Partial and total splenectomies were performed (five and 10 children, respectively). Hematologic parameters, liver function tests, and splenic volume before and after the surgery we

Congenital disorders of platelet function are a heterogeneous group of disorders that are often not detected until bleeding occurs. In clinical settings only a few methods have proven to be useful for identification and classification of inherited platelet disorders. For a rational diagnostic approach, a stepwise algorithm is recommended. Patient history and clinical investigation are mandatory. Von Willebrand disease and other coagulation disorders should always be ruled out prior to specific platelet testing. Platelet count, size, volume (MPV) and morphology may guide further investigations.

Over eighty years have passed since Donath and Landsteiner identified the syndrome of PCH and reported an in vitro test for its diagnosis. The accuracy of their observations, and the usefulness of the DL procedure has persisted. PCH has been investigated over the years providing further information regarding antibody specificity and serological characteristics. However, the etiology of the syndrome remains to be elucidated. PCH, which was once thought to be rare and associated primarily with congenital syphilis, is not encountered as one of the most common causes of acute transient hemolytic a

BackgroundMultiple myeloma (MM) is a common hematological malignancy, and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is one of its most significant adverse drug reactions. While CIPN can be managed through dose adjustments or treatment discontinuation, its assessment relies on patient-reported symptoms. The need for validated tools to accurately assess CIPN and support clinical decisions is critical to improving patient outcomes and ensuring more effective management strategies.AimTo perform the cross-cultural adaptation of the Indication for Common Toxicity Criteria Grading of Peripher

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) are oncogenic retroviruses linked etiologically to human diseases. In Chile, these viruses have been studied in ethnic populations, or patients diagnosed clinically with HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis, but have not been studied in patients with malignant hematological diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and viral prevalence of HTLV-1/2 among patients with malignant hematological diseases. Eighty-eight patients with malignant hematological diseases were tested by enzyme-linked immu

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from inadequate insulin production or ineffective insulin utilization. Type 2 diabetes, the most prevalent form, is associated with alterations in hematological parameters. Notably, there is no evidence addressing hematological parameters and their associated factors among adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Garowe City. Thus, this study aimed to assess hematological parameters and associated factors among adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in comparison to healthy controls attending

Over the past 20 years, the number of invasive fungal infections has continued to persist, due primarily to the increased numbers of patients subjected to severe immunosuppression. Despite the development of more active, less toxic antifungal agents and the standard use of antifungal prophylaxis, invasive fungal infections (especially invasive mold infections) continue to be a significant factor in hematopoietic cell and solid organ transplantation outcomes, resulting in high mortality rates. Since the use of fluconazole as standard prophylaxis in the hematopoietic cell transplantation setting

Fast diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is essential as early adequate therapy improves survival. However, current microbiological methods suffer from a low sensitivity or a long turnaround time, often as a result of batching. Recently, two lateral flow assays for diagnosing IPA have been CE (Conformité Européenne)-marked and commercialized. These assays can be used for fast single sample testing. However, clinical validation and comparative studies are lacking. We therefore sought to evaluate and compare these assays in adult hematology patients. We retrospectively tested 235

The pathogenesis of hematological tumors has not been fully elucidated. The academic community believes that genetic mutation abnormalities play a crucial role in the occurrence and development of hematological malignancies. Chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL) is a rare hematological tumor in the world. It is characterized by a Philadelphia chromosome BCR-ABL1-negative myeloproliferative tumor. It can be accompanied by mutations in various genes. Colony-stimulating factor 3 receptor (CSF3R) is a classic mutation in CNL and is included in the diagnostic criteria for CNL. This article described

PURPOSE: Down syndrome (DS) or trisomy 21, brings together some unique aspects from clinical pediatrics. Among the hematological disorders present in DS, by far the most important is the predisposition for developing acute leukemia. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) of DS has a preleukemic state with the onset in the neonatal period, rarely symptomatic but with the presence of blasts in peripheral blood smear and apparently a spontaneous remission. The unique tumor profile of DS underlines the importance of chromosome 21 in hematopoiesis and it can help understanding leukemogenesis in general. The
