The dangers of snowboarding: a 9-year prospective comparison of snowboarding and skiing injuries.

We studied 2,552 snowboarding injuries and 5048 skiing injuries sustained during 1988-97. The number of snowboarding injuries had been increasing year by year and was 6 times as many as skiing injuries (2.0 versus 0.35 per 1,000 visits). The types of snowboarding injuries included fractures (39%), lacerations (21%), dislocations (17%), and contusions (15%). Upper extremity injuries were more frequent than those in the lower extremity in snowboarders. The commonest fractures involved the radius (48%), clavicle (11%), humerus (11%), and ulna (7-8%). The shoulder joint was most commonly dislocate

Traumatic Pubic-type Anterior Dislocation of the Hip with an Ipsilateral Greater Trochanter Fracture: Case Report and Review of Literature.

Due to the inherent stability of the hip joint, hip dislocations constitute a relatively small proportion of all the traumatic dislocations encountered in the emergency department. Among them, the anterior type of hip dislocation is less common than the posterior type of dislocation. Anterior dislocations are usually associated with an injury to other, nearby structures like the acetabulum and femoral head. An ipsilateral greater trochanter fracture with anterior hip dislocation is very sparsely reported in the literature. We report the case of a pubic type of anterior hip dislocation associat

Bilateral asymmetrical hip dislocation with one side obturator intra-pelvic dislocation. Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hip dislocations usually occur as a result of motor vehicle accidents and require high energy trauma. Bilateral hip dislocations are rare compared to unilateral ones. Most reported cases are asymmetrical simultaneous bilateral anterior and posterior dislocations. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 32years female passenger who was involved in road traffic accident and had bilateral asymmetrical hip dislocations with one side posterior and the other side obturator intra-pelvic dislocation. Concentric reduction was achieved by closed reduction of both sides under gener

Hip arthroscopy in adults.

The acceptance and rates of hip arthroscopy are increasing in the United States and abroad and the literature describing it is expanding. Indications for hip arthroscopy include labral tears, loose bodies, femoroacetabular impingement, ruptured ligamentum teres, chondral injuries, adhesive capsulitis, instability, synovial disease, disorders of the iliopsoas tendon, external coxa saltans, tears of the hip abductors, and diagnosis of unresolved intra-articular hip pain. Current techniques in the central and peripheral compartments include, but are not limited to, labral debridement, labral repa

Imaging of triathlon injuries.

Injuries in triathletes are common and are mostly overuse injuries. Rotator cuff tendinitis is the most common complaint from swimming, but … addition to knee injuries from running, triathletes may also develop foot and ankle, lower leg, and hip injuries similar to single-sport distance runners. Some injuries in triathletes may be mainly symptomatic during one of the three sports but are exacerbated by one or both of the other disciplines.

Injury-Inciting Activities in Male and Female Football Players: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive examination of the sport-specific activities performed around the time of injury is important to hypothesise injury mechanisms, develop prevention strategies, improve management, and inform future investigations. The aim of this systematic review is to summarise the current literature describing the activities performed around the time of injury in football (soccer). METHODS: A systematic search was carried out in PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and OpenGrey. Studies were included if participants were football players aged > 13 years old and the activities per

Case Report: Traumatic obturator hip dislocation with subtrochanteric fracture in an 8-year-old child.

BACKGROUND: Obturator-type hip dislocation is a rare condition in pediatric patients, with the simultaneous occurrence of an ipsilateral subtrochanteric femoral fracture being exceptionally uncommon. Although various treatment methods have been described for hip dislocation or subtrochanteric femoral fractures, managing these injuries remains challenging due to the potential risk of femoral head avascular necrosis and concerns about fixation stability. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old boy sustained a traumatic obturator hip dislocation and an ipsilateral subtrochanteric fracture following a f

Arthroscopy of the hip for paediatric and adolescent disorders: current concepts.

Hip arthroscopy is particularly attractive in children as it confers advantages over arthrotomy or open surgery, such as shorter recovery time and earlier return to activity. Developments in surgical technique and arthroscopic instrumentation have enabled extension of arthroscopy of the hip to this age group. Potential challenges in paediatric and adolescent hip arthroscopy include variability in size, normal developmental change from childhood to adolescence, and conditions specific to children and adolescents and their various consequences. Treatable disorders include the sequelae of traumat

Missed musculoskeletal injuries in a University Hospital in Riyadh: types of missed injuries and responsible factors.

Eighty missed musculoskeletal injuries in 51 patients in King Khalid University Hospital are analysed. The diagnostic failure rate was 0.6 per cent of all injured patients seen in the emergency room and 6 per cent of admissions under orthopaedic care. The three commonest sites of missed injury were the knee (16 injuries), the foot and ankle (14 injuries) and the hip and pelvis (13 injuries). Twenty-four (47 per cent) presented initially with multiple injuries. In 48 of these patients (60 per cent) there were one or more complaints related to the missed injury. Factors responsible for inadequat

Open posterior dislocation of hip in a 6-year-old boy: a rare case report.

Open hip dislocation in pediatric patients is a rare injury. Open posterior dislocation because of soft tissue damage is unstable after reduction. There is no treatment protocol in the literature for this injury in pediatric patients. We treated a 6-year-old boy presented with open posterior hip dislocation. Thorough debridement was performed and antibiotics were administered to prevent infection, and fixation of reduction with Kirschner-wires (K-wires) was performed. Nonthreaded K-wires were used under an image intensifier to minimize the risk of physeal injury. A hip spica cast was used to p

A Rare Case of a Traumatic Posterior Hip Dislocation in a 3-Year-Old Boy: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

We present a rare case of neglected hip dislocation in a 3-year-old boy. Hip dislocations in childhood represent less than 6% of all injuries. The boy presented to the ED with ongoing hip pain after his leg got stuck in a carousel. The physical and radiologic examination revealed a posterior right hip dislocation. The closed reduction failed, so open reduction during surgery was performed. The postoperative protocol included 3 days of immobilization with early mobilization and pain-adapted weight bearing. No signs of femoral head malperfusion occurred 2 months after the injury. The patient did

[Clinical application progress of hip arthroscopy].

The hip arthroscopy develops quickly in the past 20 years. Its use in the diagnosis and treatment of the hip injury get more notably. Many of pathologic conditions previously unrecognized through X-ray, CT or MRI have been diagnosed correctly under hip arthroscopy. The technology has become gradually a golden standard to confirm the hip discords. In the present, the examining path of the hip arthroscopy contains mainly the outside path, the anterior path, the outside-posterior path. The application range of the hip arthroscopy includes the management of labral tears, the femoroacetabular impin

[Post-traumatic coxarthrosis. Medicolegal conditions of the likelihood of fractures, luxations or contusions].

Trauma is the cause of 5 to 10% of all cases of osteoarthritis of the hip. One third of patients with a dislocation or fracture-dislocation of the hip or an acetabular fracture develop osteoarthritis of the hip within one to 20 years. Symptoms may be minor or absent during the interval. In addition to severe injuries, simple contusions resulting for instance from a blow to the greater trochanter or knee or from forced abduction of the hip (e.g., splits) can also result in osteoarthritis of the hip. We developed a set of five imputability criteria, of which three are essential: 1) documentation

Acute Obturator Externus Injury in Professional Soccer Players: A Case Series.

When patients present with hip or groin pain, proximal quadriceps or adductor injuries are often initially suspected. In this case report, however, we present three cases of professional soccer players who were found to have obturator externus injury. A 30-year-old player and a 24-year-old player complained of pain in the left side after long distance shooting during an in-season training session and a match, respectively. Another 24-year-old player complained of pain in the right side after long distance passing during a preseason training session. On physical examination, active hip external
