Can doctors place limits on their medical practices?

PHYSICIANS SHOULD EXERCISE GREAT CAUTION and probably seek legal counsel if they decide to place specific limits on the work they will do or patients they will see, lawyer Karen Capen warns. The BC Human Rights Council recently ruled that a physician had violated the province's Human Rights Act when he declined to provide artificial insemination for a lesbian couple. The physician argued unsuccessfully that increased risks of litigation constituted a bona fide and reasonable justification for denying the service.

Vaccination differences among U.S. adults by their self-identified sexual orientation, National Health Interview Survey, 2013-2015.

INTRODUCTION: Very few studies have explored the associations between self-identified sexual orientation and comprehensive vaccination coverage. Most of the previous studies that reported health disparities among lesbian, gay and bisexual populations were not based on a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults, limiting the generalizability of the findings. Starting in 2013, the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) included questions to ascertain the adult's self-identified sexual orientation that allowed national level vaccination estimation by sexual orientation. This study examine

[Factors associated with suicide attempts by sexual minorities: Results from the 2011 gay and lesbian survey].

BACKGROUND: Since the 1990s, several studies have found higher rates of suicide attempts in homosexuals and bisexuals than in heterosexuals. The current challenge is to identify risk factors for targeting prevention. The aim of this paper was to determine, for the first time in France, the prevalence of suicide attempts over a 12-month period and associated factors in a population of men and women who self-identified as homosexuals or bisexuals. METHODS: A convenience sample cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2011 using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire made available in the g

The social environment and suicide attempts in lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the social environment surrounding lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth may contribute to their higher rates of suicide attempts, controlling for individual-level risk factors. METHODS: A total of 31 852 11th grade students (1413 [4.4%] lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals) in Oregon completed the Oregon Healthy Teens survey in 2006-2008. We created a composite index of the social environment in 34 counties, including (1) the proportion of same-sex couples, (2) the proportion of registered Democrats, (3) the presence of gay-straight alliances in schools, and (4)

Lessons Learned: A Straight Therapist's Perspective on Treating a Gay Woman's Romantic Breakup.

This article presents the retrospective insights of a straight female psychologist working with a gay female patient through the emotional aftermath of a romantic breakup. Central to this case study is the therapist's journey toward understanding the culturally specific dynamics that shape the breakup experiences of non-heterosexual individuals differently from those of heterosexual individuals. In addition to deepening her understanding of important therapeutic considerations unique to a non-heterosexual breakup, the author explores how certain cultural norms within the queer community, inclu

Afterword: Scanning the Chicana lesbian body politic: knowledge, practice, identity.

Chicana Lesbians The Girls Our Mothers Warned Us About ushered in the fulfillment of editor Carla Trujillo's vision for an anthology that would recognize and demystify the existence of Chicana lesbians. Our deep and critical affection for Trujillo's anthology prompts us to acknowledge the expansive potentiality of Chicana Lesbians yet also recognize the historical specificity of its relevance and legibility. While our deep affection urges us to reflect on the myriad ways to love on an object like Chicana Lesbians including how this text has been read, engaged, and critiqued, we also acknowledg

Exposure to interpersonal stigma enhances the effectiveness of a culturally adapted personalized normative feedback alcohol intervention for sexual minority women.

Stigma-related stress and inflated perceptions of substance use norms are positioned in the literature as theoretically distinct explanations for disproportionate substance use among sexual minorities. As research has yet to examine how these variables may interact in an intervention context, this study examined the impact of recent experiences with violence and harassment due to sexual minority status (i.e., interpersonal stigma exposure) on the effectiveness of a culturally adapted personalized normative feedback intervention for lesbian, bisexual, and queer (LBQ) women. A sub-sample of 499

LGBTQ+ Youth-Generated Intervention Concepts for Reducing Teen Dating Violence Inequities.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, nonbinary, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) youth are at substantially greater risk than cisgender heterosexual youth for experiencing teen dating violence (TDV) victimization, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse within dating/romantic relationships. Despite these inequities, there are no evidence-based interventions designed specifically to address TDV among LGBTQ+ youth. To redress this dearth of interventions, we utilized a youth-centric approach, wherein 46 LGBTQ+ youth co-developed intervention concepts for reducing TDV.

The Association of Asthma, Sexual Identity, and Inhaled Substance Use among U.S. Adolescents.

Rationale: Minority sexual identity appears to confer asthma risks. Although associations between inhaled substances and asthma are established, these have not been examined among sexual minority youths. Given sexual minority adolescents' disproportionately high rates of substance use, research is needed to fill this important gap. Objectives: Using a representative sample of adolescents from the United States, we 1) examined associations among asthma, sexual identity, and inhaled substance use and tested 2a) whether sexual identity moderates relationships between asthma and inhaled substance u

Differences in Multimorbidity among Cisgender Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Adults: Investigating Differences across Age-Groups.

Objectives: Despite increased risk for chronic disease, there is limited research that has examined disparities in multimorbidity among sexual minority adults and whether these disparities differ by age. Methods: Data were from the 2014-2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. We used sex-stratified multinomial logistic regression to examine differences in multimorbidity between sexual minority and heterosexual cisgender adults and whether hypothesized differences varied across age-groups. Results: The sample included 687,151 adults. Gay, lesbian, and bisexual adults had higher odds of

Examining Associations of Sexual Attraction and Attitudes on Women's Disordered Eating Behavior.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to expand the scant research on disordered eating in women identifying same-sex sexual attractions. METHOD: We used multiple linear regressions to explore potential mechanisms driving disordered eating--both explicit and implicit weight bias and heterosexism--in a cross-sectional, online-recruited community sample of women (N = 437). Participants endorsed a range of sexual attractions from exclusively opposite-sex (21.1%) to exclusively same-sex (19.5%) attraction. RESULTS: Findings revealed no associations between sexual attraction and disordered eating. Awareness of soc

The experiences of Australian lesbian couples becoming parents: deciding, searching and birthing.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To explore Australian lesbian mothers' experiences of becoming parents. BACKGROUND: Lesbians are becoming parents and, since legislative changes in Australia, their numbers are increasing. Prior to legislative changes, fertility and health services for women in Australia exclusively served the needs of the heterosexual community. Although lesbian experience of seeking health services has been studied in other contexts, little has been done to understand their experience of deciding, conceiving and birthing. DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive study. METHOD: Seven interviews

Comparison of gynecologic health care problems between lesbians and bisexual women. A survey of 2,345 women.

A survey of reproductive system problems was conducted in a large group of lesbians (n = 1,921) and bisexual women (n = 424) in a nonclinical setting. Demographically the groups were similar: the majority of respondents were white, urban and well educated. A history of heterosexual coitus was common in both groups (bisexuals, 95%; lesbians, 77%). Bisexuals were more likely than lesbians to report an abnormal Papanicolaou smear, cystitis, genital herpes, gonorrhea and vaginal infections. When sexual orientation was controlled for, most, but not all, of these differences were associated with a d

Identifying Key Factors to PrEP Initiation and Persistence Among YMSM Through Focus Groups and Surveys in Two High-Priority Settings.

Cisgender men are diagnosed with HIV at a rate four times greater than cisgender women, with 71% of infections attributed to male-male sexual contact. Despite expanding accessibility, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention is initiated by only 30% of people with PrEP indications. Five focus groups with 42 young men who have sex with men from New York and Alabama were conducted to identify key factors to PrEP initiation and persistence. Thirty focus group participants completed a survey on demographics, PrEP choices and health care attitudes. Findings suggest provider competency sig

Interventions, Barriers, and Facilitators to Address the Sexual Problems of Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men Living with HIV: A Rapid Scoping Review.

Sexual problems are common among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) after diagnosis with HIV. However, these are often overlooked in care and research, where sexual risk reduction and biomedical aspects of sexual health tend to dominate. We conducted a rapid scoping review to investigate which sexual problems of GBM living with HIV are addressed by interventions, and the barriers and facilitators to their implementation. Literature from high-income countries published in English since 2010 was reviewed. Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, and Scopus databases were searched on July

Communities at Risk for Mpox and Stigmatizing Policies: A Randomized Survey, Republic of Korea, 2022.

Objectives. To estimate the impact of communicating to the public that men who have sex with men (MSM) are most at risk for mpox on potential stigmatization and risk perception. Methods. We conducted a survey experiment randomizing exposure to messages about mpox among a sample of the South Korean public (n = 1500) in July 2022. We randomized respondents to receive an informational message about mpox that was (1) a neutral informational message about mpox that did not highlight its origins or risk groups (control group), (2) a message explaining that the virus originated in Africa, or (3) a me
