The Role of Emergency Medical Services in Addressing Opioid Use Disorder-A Position Statement and Resource Document of NAEMSP.

Opioid overdose remains one of the most urgent public health crises in the United States, and for many individuals, the first and sometimes only encounter with health care comes through emergency medical services (EMS). As a result, the role of EMS has evolved far beyond reversing overdoses in the moment. Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a treatable medical disease with effective treatment, and EMS agencies are uniquely positioned to partner with local community resources and hospitals to combine efforts in implementing harm-reduction and treatment strategies. This document provides specific guida

Nosocomial transmission of Legionella pneumophila to a child from a hospital's cold-water supply.

Human Legionella infections mainly consist of community-acquired and nosocomial pneumonia and rarely affect children. We describe a nosocomial infection with Legionella pneumophila, serogroup 1, subgroup OLDA, in an immunocompromized 2-y-old girl at a paediatric clinic. L. pneumophila identical to that of the patient was found in the hospital's cold-water but not in the hot-water distribution system. Transmission of Legionella to the girl most probably occurred by Legionella-contaminated cold water mixed and heated by water from the hot-water system. Mixing of hot and cold water probably occur

Clinical and microbiological characteristics and outcomes of community-acquired sepsis among adults: a single center, 1-year retrospective observational cohort study from Hungary.

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired sepsis is a life-threatening systemic reaction, which starts within ≤72 h of hospital admittance in an infected patient without recent exposure to healthcare risks. Our aim was to evaluate the characteristics and the outcomes concerning community-acquired sepsis among patients admitted to a Hungarian high-influx national medical center. METHODS: A retrospective, observational cohort study of consecutive adult patients hospitalized with community-acquired sepsis during a 1-year period was executed. Clinical and microbiological data were collected, patients with p

A European Blueprint for Community Nursing: Building Care Protocols on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 7101:2023.

Care across Europe is moving out of the hospital and into homes and communities. The family and community nurse now stands at the center of this shift, holding continuous responsibility for people where they live. Yet the procedures that guide this work are often written locally and vary widely, with no shared quality architecture behind them. This editorial proposes International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 7101:2023 as a possible common European reference model for designing community nursing care protocols, anchoring each procedure to quality principles such as people-centered ca

[The role of university hospitals in regional health care management for coping with the COVID-19 pandemic].

INTRODUCTION: The complex and dynamic situation in the current pandemic requires a regionally coordinated and interconnected cooperation between the different stakeholders within the health care system, such as the inpatient sector or the public health service. The aim of this study is to analyze health care management during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 with a focus on regional networking and communication structures. METHODS: As part of the BMBF-funded project "egePan Unimed", an online questionnaire on pandemic management was sent to the boards of all 35 German university hospitals in Nov

A multicentre point prevalence survey of patterns and quality of antibiotic prescribing in Indonesian hospitals.

BACKGROUND: The global emergence of antimicrobial resistance is driven by antibiotic misuse and overuse. However, systematic data in Indonesian hospitals to adequately inform policy are scarce. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate patterns and quality indicators of antibiotic prescribing in six general hospitals in Jakarta, Indonesia. METHODS: We conducted a hospital-wide point prevalence survey (PPS) between March and August 2019, using Global-PPS and WHO-PPS protocols. The analysis focused on antibacterials (antibiotics) for systemic use. RESULTS: Of 1602 inpatients, 993 (62.0%) received ≥1 antimicrob

Improving communicative access and patient experience in acute stroke care: An implementation journey.

INTRODUCTION: Patient experience for people with aphasia/families in acute care is frequently reported as negative, with communication barriers contributing to adverse events and significant long-term physical and psychosocial sequelae. Although the effectiveness of providing supported communication training and resources for health care providers in the stroke system is well documented, there is less evidence of implementation strategies for sustainable system change. This paper describes an implementation process targeting two specific areas: 1) improving Stroke Team communication with patie

Early exposure to a primary care course: a co-created transformative approach in health systems science.

As health systems science has become the third pillar of medical education (along with basic and clinical sciences), Thailand has been developing medical curricula to focus more on its health systems. Despite primary care being the driving force of Thailand's health systems, their integration into the curricula remains a challenge, resulting in medical students having limited exposure and understanding. To address this, a course was co-created by stakeholders to provide students with early exposure to and understanding of primary care mechanisms. Forty-one first- and second-year medical studen

Risk factors for community-acquired pressure injuries: Findings from a large-scale Asian case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Pressure injuries, also known as pressure ulcers, remain a major global health problem, causing significant clinical, economic, and psychosocial burdens despite advances in prevention and treatment. While most research has focused on hospital-acquired cases, community-acquired pressure injuries are increasingly recognised, with prevalence in some settings exceeding hospital-acquired rates. Evidence from Asian healthcare systems is limited, yet region-specific factors such as ageing populations, caregiver dependence, and variable access to wound care highlight the urgent need for co

Investigating the resistome, taxonomic composition, and mobilome of bacterial communities in hospital wastewaters of Metro Manila using a shotgun metagenomics approach.

We profiled antibiotic resistance genes, bacterial communities, and mobile genetic elements in untreated hospital wastewater from three tertiary hospitals in Metro Manila using shotgun metagenomic sequencing. The resistome analysis revealed high abundances of genes known to confer resistance against sulfonamides (sul1, sul2), aminoglycosides (aadS), and macrolides/streptogramins (msrE, mphE). High-risk resistance genes were also detected, including those known to confer resistance to β-lactams (blaOXA, blaTEM, blaGES, blaNDM, blaKPC), colistins (mcr-5), and tetracyclines [tet(C), tet(A), tet(L

[The role of psycho-oncology in cancer care in Japan].

With cancer the leading cause of death in Japan since 1981, the cancer care medical system is a critical issue. Psycho-oncology is expected to play an important role in cancer care. The "Basic Plan to Promote Cancer Control Programs" was launched in 2007 under the Cancer Control Act, and it noted the need to increase the number of psycho-oncologists in order to promote palliative care in the early phases of cancer treatment. Additionally, guidelines for new cancer care systems incorporating psychiatrists were established; these guidelines included provisions stipulating that designated cancer
