Effects of graded oral doses of meptazinol and pentazocine in comparison with placebo on experimentally induced pain in healthy humans.

The opioid agonist/antagonist meptazinol has proven to exert significant analgesia in a series of painful conditions. This study investigated the effects of single oral doses of meptazinol 100, 200, and 400 mg in comparison with pentazocine 50 and 100 mg and with placebo on experimentally induced pain. In addition, the side effect profiles were assessed. Twenty-four healthy subjects participated each in six experiments in which they received, in random double-blind fashion, each of the treatments. Every experiment comprised 10 series of measurements, two before and eight after drug administrat

[Antigenic relations between human papilloma viruses (HPV): experimental study in guinea-pigs (author's transl].

A study of specific immune response in guinea-pigs after immunization with human papilloma viruses (HPV) purified from plantar warts, hand warts and condyloma acuminata is reported. The respective viruses induced the production of high antibody titres as well as specific cellular immunity as demonstrated by intradermal tests in all the animals. Formalin-inactivated HPV gave similar results. The antigenic cross reactions between the different viruses were evaluated by immunofluorescence and immunodiffusion tests and delayed hypersentitivity reactions. Serologically the results showed viral hete

Experimental Shigella infections in laboratory animals. I. Antagonism by human normal flora components in gnotobiotic mice.

Germfree mice were associated with selected species of human intestinal bacteria and then challenged with a streptomycin-resistant Shigella flexneri strain. Antagonism against Shigella was most pronounced in mice associated with Escherichia coli and least pronounced in mice associated with Bacteroides fragilis. A moderate degree of antagonism could be demonstrated in mice associated with either Streptococcus faecalis or Bifidobacterium adolescentis. Shigella persisted in the cecal contents of E. coli-associated mice at very low, stable levels. Shigella populations were reduced to levels below

[Analysis, identification and correction of some errors of model refseqs appeared in NCBI Human Gene Database by in silico cloning and experimental verification of novel human genes].

We found that human genome coding regions annotated by computers have different kinds of many errors in public domain through homologous BLAST of our cloned genes in non-redundant (nr) database, including insertions, deletions or mutations of one base pair or a segment in sequences at the cDNA level, or different permutation and combination of these errors. Basically, we use the three means for validating and identifying some errors of the model genes appeared in NCBI GENOME ANNOTATION PROJECT REFSEQS: (I) Evaluating the support degree of human EST clustering and draft human genome BLAST. Inter-laboratories comparison of different numerical models to four experimental datasets of human vertebrae with or without metastases.

Bone metastases, remarkably common in the vertebral bodies of advanced cancer patients, are associated with an increased risk of vertebral fracture. To assess vertebral strength, subject-specific biomechanical models have been proposed based on quantitative computed tomography. Such models have been evaluated on a single dedicated dataset often acquired by the same team. The goal of this paper is to compare different biomechanical models with four experimental datasets to strengthen their validation. Finite element models developed by three groups at the University of Bern, University of Lyon,

Cultural Relevance and Acceptability of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Techniques Adapted by AI or a Human Psychologist: Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based psychological interventions are usually not accessed by marginalized groups such as refugees. Culturally adapted psychological interventions have reported larger effect sizes than nonadapted psychological interventions. However, the cultural adaptation of interventions is a lengthy process, entailing a challenge. One potential solution to overcome this challenge is the use of artificial intelligence (AI). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the perceived cultural relevance and acceptability of 2 common cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) t

The Effect of Low-Dose Acetylsalicylic Acid on Cellular Immune Responses to Experimental Sleep Restriction in Healthy Humans.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep deficiency is known to increase the risk for multiple disease conditions involving immunopathology, in which inflammation is thought to be a mechanism for disease development. Thus, one potential way to mitigate negative health consequences of deficient sleep is to target inflammation. We investigated whether low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, aspirin) administration prior to and during exposure to an experimental sleep restriction challenge affects cellular immune responses to sleep restriction. METHODS: We studied 46 healthy humans (19F/27M, age range 19-63 years) in a

From spermatogenesis to sperm function: bioinformatics and experimental insights into the role of TEKT genes in human sperm fate.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a major global health concern, with male factors accounting for nearly half of all cases. While tektin proteins are known to stabilize flagellar microtubules, comprehensive validations of the TEKT gene family across diverse human infertility phenotypes remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the expression and regulatory genetics of the TEKT family, particularly TEKT2, to determine its specific role in human spermatogenesis and sperm morphological disorders. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed public human RNA-seq and microarray datasets to evaluate TEKT expressio

Interplay of Mitochondrial Dynamics, Nutrition, and Vitamins: Evidence From Experimental and Human Studies With Implications for Women's Health.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition is a key modifiable factor supporting mitochondrial health and is essential for ovarian function and women's health across the life course. From menarche to menopause, mitochondrial efficiency underpins physiological balance. The menopausal transition is particularly critical, as hormonal and neuroendocrine changes are associated with impaired mitochondrial function and increased risk of age-related disorders. AIM: This review aimed to systematically review and synthesize the available evidence on mitochondrial function across in vitro, animal, and human studies and to e

Selenium and Iodine as Susceptibility Modifiers of Thyroid Disruption Associated with Metals: An Overview of Human and Experimental Research Data.

Background: Thyroid hormone synthesis, deiodination, and redox regulation depend on iodine availability and selenium-dependent proteins. Therefore, these nutrients may alter sensitivity to thyroid disturbance brought on by metals and metalloids; nevertheless, direct human evidence has not been compiled independently from rescue experiments. Goal: To determine the mechanistic, biomarker, and study-design needs for interpretable human research, as well as to critically assess whether iodine or selenium alters metal-associated thyroid effects. Methods: Terms for metals, metalloids, iodine, seleni

Nickel(II) sulphate-induced allergic contact dermatitis as experimental tool to investigate inflammatory pruritus in humans.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a leading cause of occupational skin disease, with nickel(II) sulphate representing one of the most prevalent contact allergies worldwide. Clinically, nickel-induced dermatitis is characterised by pronounced inflammation and intense pruritus. The functional role of endogenous mediators, structural neuronal changes, and molecular mediators contributing to the generation of itch in allergic contact dermatitis still needs to be investigated. We present nickel(II) sulphate-induced contact dermatitis as a mechanistic model to investigate pruritus under controlled cond
