Hydrocortisone interacts with endoplasmic reticulum stress in hypoxic regulation of phosphoserine aminotransferase 1 gene expression differently in normal human astrocytes and glioblastoma cells.

Objective. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and hypoxia are key factors for the effective growth of malignant tumors, including glioblastoma. The phosphoserine aminotransferase 1 (PSAT1) is an ER stress-responsive enzyme responsible for serine synthesis and necessary for tumor cell proliferation. The present study aims to investigate the regulation of the PSAT1 gene expression in U87MG glioblastoma cells and normal human astrocytes by ER stress and hypoxia depending on hydrocortisone, a native stress hormone used for co-treatment of glioblastoma and other malignant tumors. Methods. The U87MG …

Effects of low-dose oral hydrocortisone replacement versus short-term reproduction of physiological serum cortisol concentrations on insulin action in adult-onset hypopituitarism.

Oral cancers are amongst the most common cancers in the Indian subcontinent; in India alone, an estimated 1.2 lakh new patients were diagnosed with it. Reconstruction with free flaps slowly gained popularity over time to become the standard for care for treating large head and neck defects. Flap selection is a complex process; more specifically, the preoperative conditions of patients, the extent of the disease, and the resources available are critical considerations to consider when selecting the best reconstructive technique. It is very well established that certain parts of India, especiall

Dosage of hydrocortisone during late infancy is positively associated with changes in body mass index during early childhood in patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency.

Obesity is a major complication in children with 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD). There is evidence to show that higher body mass index (BMI) during infancy and early childhood is associated with an increased risk for the subsequent development of obesity in the general population; however, limited information is currently available on this issue in 21-OHD patients. Additionally, despite the frequent use of supraphysiological dosages of hydrocortisone in 21-OHD, the association between BMI and hydrocortisone dosage during these periods remains largely unclear; therefore, we retrospectively …

Topical hydrocortisone 17-butyrate 21-propionate in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases: pharmacological data, clinical efficacy, safety and calculation of the therapeutic index.

Hydrocortisone 17-butyrate 21-propionate (hydrocortisone buteprate, HBP) is a medium potent, non-halogenated double-ester of hydrocortisone with a favorable benefit/risk ratio for the treatment of inflammatory skin disorders. HBP is available as a 0.1% cream or ointment formulation. Good results were obtained with a once-daily topical treatment. HBP is characterized by a strong topical anti-inflammatory activity and weak systemic action. It is considered to have potency comparable to that of betamethasone 17-valerate (BV), but its systemic effects are less pronounced. HBP was shown to have a g…

Lack of effect of a single dose of hydrocortisone on serotonin(1A) receptors in recovered depressed patients measured by positron emission tomography with [11C]WAY-100635.

BACKGROUND: Elevated cortisol levels might account for the reduction in central serotonin 1A (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT](1A)) receptor binding and function observed in patients with major depression. We tested this hypothesis by studying the effect of acute administration of hydrocortisone on 5-HT(1A) receptor binding potential (BP) in subjects recovered from depression. METHODS: We studied 14 subjects (8 male, 6 female) who had recovered from at least two episodes of major depression and had been euthymic and drug free for at least 6 months. Serotonin 1A receptor BP was measured by [(11)C]WA…

Preliminary observations on the effects of hydrocortisone and sodium methohexital on development of Sarcophaga (Curranea) tibialis Macquart (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), and implications for estimating post mortem interval.

Larvae of Sarcophaga (Curranea) tibialis (S. tibialis) were reared at constant temperature on chicken liver treated with a steroid or a barbiturate at concentrations that would be lethal, half-lethal and twice-lethal doses for humans. Trends to greater mortality at higher drug concentrations were not statistically significant. Larvae exposed to either drug took significantly longer to reach pupation compared to those in the control, while larvae exposed to sodium methohexital passed through pupation significantly faster than those in the control. No systematic relationship was found between dr
