The use of hypnosis with cancer patients.

Hypnosis has proven to be extremely valuable in the treatment of cancer patients. Specific applications include: establishing rapport between the patient and members of the medical health team; control of pain with self-regulation of pain perception through the use of glove anesthesia, time distortion, amnesia, transference of pain to a different body part, or dissociation of the painful part from the rest of the body; controlling symptoms, such as, nausea, anticipatory emesis, learned food aversions, etc.; psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, guilt, anger, hostility, frustration, isolation,

The effects of internal and external imagery on performing figures in figure skating.

The influence of mental imagery perspective on figure skating performance was investigated. Fifty-nine skaters, who were in attendance at the Canadian Figure Skating Association's National Singles Seminar, participated in the study. Subjects performed a modified senior level figure as a pre-test measure, and then were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: an internal kinesthetic imagery group, an internal visual imagery group, an external visual imagery group, and a control training group. All treatment groups underwent four training sessions. Post-test performance revealed no sig

On your fingertips - A new aid to learn the anatomy of the secundum atrial septal defect.

Though the anatomy of heart is beautifully demonstrated by two-dimensional echocardiography, it is difficult to imagine a three-dimensional structure on two-dimensional echocardiogram. It is especially difficult for a junior fellow in cardiology to conceptualize the atrial septal defect (ASD) and its rims on two-dimensional echo at different angles, especially trans-esophageal echo (TEE). The left hand can be a useful tool to learn the ASD and its rims on TEE.

Sonography of acute scrotal abnormalities.

Accurate diagnosis in patients with acute scrotal abnormalities remains a challenge to both radiologists and clinicians. Sonography using either small parts scanners or conventional equipment available in almost all departments will continue to play a larger role in aiding the clinical assessment of these patients. As a rapid, noninvasive imagining technique, sonography can reliably answer important clinical questions and guide prompt, early surgical or medical therapy.

Macromolecules and the origin of life.

From our knowledge of present day organisms, it is hard to imagine a living assembly, even at its most primitive stage, without macromolecules. In order to look for the macromolecules which possibly participated in the assembly of the primitive organisms, the reaction and formation of polymers in HCN under irradiation of ultraviolet ray of 184.9 nm. was studied. As an example of a simple way of producing an assembly of macromolecules, the mechanism of coacrevation was studied by using gelatin as the material.

Ventromedial prefrontal cortex activity during extinction recall suggests successful extinction learning via mental imagery.

Mental imagery is an important element of psychological therapies for fear-related disorders. The present study evaluated the efficacy of imagery extinction using a within-subject design allowing for the comparison of a conditioned stimulus extinguished via mental imagery (CS+Ei) to an unextinguished conditioned stimulus (CS+U) during extinction recall. Twenty-eight human participants underwent differential fear conditioning during functional magnetic resonance imagining. Successful acquisition of differential fear conditioning was confirmed by self-reported fear, skin conductance response (SC

Deaf-led alarm design: technology and disability in home, work and parenthood.

Domestic alarms are highly personal technological appendages that help us achieve an individual sense of safety and familial well-being-like baby monitors that help us care for children and alarm clocks that ensure a daily routine and help us get to work on time. Alarms can be understood as technologies that extend our eyes, ears, and memory to monitor our homes and ourselves in various ways beyond typical human capacity. The designs of domestic alarms tend to favour audible forms of alerting, and disabled users and inventors have hacked and redesigned alarms to fit their own families' needs.

Impairment of affective and cognitive empathy in high functioning autism is mediated by alterations in emotional reactivity.

Empathy impairments are considered a key aspect of autism-spectrum disorders (ASD). Previous research consistently shows reduced cognitive empathy, but findings on affective empathy vary, possibly due to experimental design variations (e.g., stimulus modality, social distance) and individual psychological factors (e.g., perceptual abilities, emotional reactivity). This study aims to clarify deficits in affective and cognitive empathy in ASD by addressing these contributing factors. Empathy was examined in 34 autistic individuals and 33 typically developed controls (TDCs) through the Textual Em

Unrestricted eye movements strengthen effective connectivity from hippocampal to oculomotor regions during scene construction.

Scene construction is a key component of memory recall, navigation, and future imagining, and relies on the medial temporal lobes (MTL). A parallel body of work suggests that eye movements may enable the imagination and construction of scenes, even in the absence of external visual input. There are vast structural and functional connections between regions of the MTL and those of the oculomotor system. However, the directionality of connections between the MTL and oculomotor control regions, and how it relates to scene construction, has not been studied directly in human neuroimaging. In the c…

Object attachment and emotions in hoarding disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Object attachment is a core feature of hoarding disorder (HD), but it also occurs in people without HD. It is therefore critical to clarify differences between normal and abnormal object attachment. Although previous studies show that HD is associated with high emotional reactivity, no study to date has examined the nature and intensity of discrete emotions in people with and without HD in relation to object attachment. METHOD: Individuals with HD (n = 93) and matched controls (n = 93) were recruited via MTurk. They identified and described a possession of low monetary va

The dawn of robotic surgery in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) utilizing the da Vinci robotic system has opened a new era for minimally-invasive surgery (MIS) in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Awareness of the historical steps in developing robotic surgery (RS) and understanding its current application within our field can help open our imaginations to future of the surgical robotics. We compiled a historical perspective on the evolution of surgical robotics, the road to the da Vinci surgical system, and conducted a review of TORS regarding clinical applications and limitations, prospective clinical trials and curre…

Frequency of nonsuicidal self-injury is associated with impulsive decision-making during criticism.

Research indicates that nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is associated with impulsive traits, but not impulsive behavior on laboratory tasks, even in the context of negative mood. However, previous studies may not have induced forms of negative affect most relevant to NSSI. For example, evidence implicates both self-criticism and feeling criticized by others in NSSI engagement. We conducted two studies examining whether negative mood related to criticism increases impulsive decision-making among individuals with NSSI histories, using a gambling task embedded with auditory critical comments; part

Episodic future thinking and future-based decision-making in a case of retrograde amnesia.

We investigated episodic future thinking (EFT) and future-based cognition and decision-making in patient SG, who developed a dense retrograde amnesia following hypoxia due to a cardiac arrest. Despite intact general cognitive and executive functioning, SG was unable to remember events from his entire lifetime. He had, however, relatively spared anterograde memory and general semantic knowledge. Voxel-based morphometry detected a reduction of gray matter in the thalamus, cerebellum and fusiform gyrus bilaterally, and, at a reduced threshold, in several regions of the autobiographical memory net

Increased brain activation during motor imagery suggests central abnormality in Neonatal Brachial Plexus Palsy.

Neonatal Brachial Plexus Palsy (NBPP) may lead to permanent impairment of arm function. As NBPP occurs when central motor programs develop, these may be ill-formed. We studied elbow flexion and motor imagery with fMRI to search for abnormal motor programming. We compared the cortical activity of adults with conservatively treated NBPP to that of healthy individuals stratified for hand dominance, using fMRI BOLD tasks of elbow flexion and motor imagery of flexion. Additionally, resting-state networks and regional gray matter volume were studied. Sixteen adult NBPP patients (seven men; median ag

The effects of process-focused versus experience-focused narratives in a breast cancer treatment decision task.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of patient narratives that discuss decision processes versus patient experiences on decisions about treatments for early stage breast cancer. METHODS: We recruited 300 women with no previous history of breast cancer to imagine that they had been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and to choose between mastectomy and lumpectomy with radiation. Before learning about their treatment options, participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions with videotaped stories from fictitious cancer survivors, using a 2 (content: experience versus process) ×

Subarachnoid-pleural fistula in a child: the cause and treatment.

Hydrothorax of the cerebrospinal fluid after a subarachnoid-pleural fistula is a rare condition. Subarachnoid-pleural fistula may appear after a trauma at the thoracolumbar vertebral column or iatrogenically after thoracotomy. A two years and four months old boy who was operated because of ganglioneuroblastoma was admitted to hospital due to respiratory distress. The chest roentgenogram obtained two months after thoracotomy, showed a pleural effusion at the left side and a chest tube was inserted. The craniospinal magnetic resonance imagining revealed subarachnoid-pleural fistula and lumbar ex

Wingless signaling in a large insect, the blowfly Lucilia sericata: a beautiful example of evolutionary developmental biology.

Blowflies are the primary facultative agent in causing myiasis of domestic sheep in the whole world and, at the same time, it is an important tool for forensic medicine. Surprisingly, and in contrast to its importance, almost no data regarding the embryology and molecular markers are known for this insect. In this report, we present a detailed description of the blowfly Lucilia sericata embryogenesis and of imaginal disc development. The embryogenesis of Lucilia strongly resembles that of Drosophila, despite their apparent size difference. Moreover, imaginal disc development appears to be equa

Abdominal aortic aneurysm in ultrasound and CT examination.

About 75% of AAAs are asymptomatic. They come to light as the chance findings of a lump with or without pulsation, noted on self-examination, a routine physical check-up, or during diagnostic investigations. Ultrasonography and CT are two most often used in diagnosing of AAAs. The aim of the study was the assessment of the diagnostic value of computed tomography and ultrasonography in the evaluation of abdominal aortic aneurysm. Material comprises a group of 26 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm. There were 18 men and 8 women, aged between 48 and 76 years (mean age 62 years). In each pati

Judgments of exocentric direction in large-scale space.

Judgments of exocentric direction are quite common, especially when judging where others are looking or pointing. To investigate these judgments in large-scale space, observers were shown two targets in a large open field and were asked to judge the exocentric direction specified by the targets. The targets ranged in egocentric distance from 5 to 20 m with target-to-target angular separations of 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 135 degrees. Observers judged exocentric direction using two methods: (i) by judging which point on a distant fence appeared collinear with the two targets, and (ii) by orie
