This study presents a clinical report of the Finnish chromosome t(18q; 10p) translocation family with an overview of eight other selected immunoglobulin A (IgA)-deficient 18q deletion (18q-) patients from seven published articles. The family members show features common to 18q- syndrome such as mental retardation, multiple facial dysmorphism, foot/hand deformities, abnormal myelination of brain white matter, and a spectrum of immunological/infectious disorders including IgA deficiency (IgAD). Genotype-phenotype correlation study of the unbalanced t(18q-; 10p+) translocation family members and

Humans with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome display a progressive immunological disorder associated with compromised Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Interacting Protein (WIP) function. Mice deficient in WIP recapitulate such an immunodeficiency that has been attributed to T cell dysfunction; however, any contribution of B cells is as yet undefined. Here we have shown that WIP deficiency resulted in defects in B cell homing, chemotaxis, survival, and differentiation, ultimately leading to diminished germinal center formation and antibody production. Furthermore, in the absence of WIP, several receptors, name

To help clarify the nature and pathogenesis of the syndrome of severely opportunistic infection associated with immune deficiency in young homosexual males, we investigated the immunological characteristics of a group of 33 young homosexual men. These young men all had the prodrome to the syndrome which included a history of multiple sexual partners and multiple sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, they all had a past history of mild to moderate viral, bacterial, parasitic, or fungal infections and had used recreational drugs. Within this group of patients, there were five men who had K

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a primary immunodeficiency, which is characterized by abnormal immune system functions caused by the lack of expression of WAS protein (WASp). A higher tumor susceptibility is observed in WAS patients; whether this is a direct consequence of impaired immunosurveillance due to WAS deficiency in immune cells is, however, an open question. In this issue of the European Journal of Immunology, Catucci et al. [Eur. J. Immunol. 2014. 44: 1039-1045] shed light on the link between Was deficiency and immunosurveillance in a tumor-prone mouse model and report a role for

Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) is a complex enzyme composed of 13 subunits, three of which are encoded by the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The other 10 subunits are encoded by the nuclear DNA, synthesized in the cytoplasm, and transported into the mitochondria. The complexity of the enzyme and its dual genetic control explain the heterogeneity of clinical phenotypes associated with COX deficiency. There are two major syndromes, one characterized by muscle involvement (fatal infantile or benign infantile myopathy), the other dominated by brain disease (Leigh syndrome, myoclonic epilepsy with ragged r

A 69-year-old man with a history of thymoma resection was diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia. Initially, the patient responded well to molnupiravir, but he experienced a relapse. Subsequent steroids for COVID-19-related organizing pneumonia (OP) led to temporary improvement, but his condition deteriorated when the steroids were tapered off. Further investigation revealed hypogammaglobulinemia, and Good's syndrome (GS) was diagnosed. Immunoglobulin replacement therapy was administered, significantly improving the pulmonary shadows, and no subsequent relapse occurred. GS is an immunodeficiency co

INTRODUCTION: Good's Syndrome is a rare cause of immunodeficiency associated with thymoma. Patients with this syndrome are prone to infections with encapsulated microorganisms. The diagnosis may be delayed for a considerable time period even after the thymectomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 70-year-old woman with a background of thymectomy who presented with pneumonia and gram negative sepsis. Haemophilus influenzae was found in blood cultures. Moreover, there was evidence of impaired B and T cell immunity consistent with Good's Syndrome. She was commenced on immunoglobulin r

BACKGROUND: The Mulvihill-Smith syndrome consists of a large number of stigmata. A few of them are also seen in the LEOPARD syndrome. In both syndromes keratoconus has not yet been reported.
PATIENT: We present a twenty-year-old male patient suffering from keratoconus in connection with a Mulvihill-Smith syndrome. A keratoplasty à chaud was done after perforation of the corneal ulcer.
CONCLUSION: As a major complication corneal graft rejection is known after keratoplasty à chaud. However, in our patient immunological graft failure may be prevented by the T-cell defect.

Adenoviruses are among the many pathogens and opportunistic agents that cause serious infection in the congenitally immunocompromised, in patients undergoing immunosuppressive treatment for organ and tissue transplants and for cancers, and in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. Adenovirus infections in these patients tend to become disseminated and severe, and the serotypes involved are clustered according to the age of the patient and the nature of the immunosuppression. Over 300 adenovirus infections in immunocompromised patients, with an overall case fatality rate of 48%, are re

Larynges from 17 patients with DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) and from 14 patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) (11 non-DGS and 3 possible but unproven DGS) were dissected, measured, and compared to a control population of comparable body length. The patients with DGS and the 3 patients with TOF suspected of having DGS showed the following: small thyroid cartilages with increased anterior angle, abnormally short superior cornua, low ratio of mean superior cornual length to distance between superior cornual tips, and delayed time of maximal rate of increase in superior cornual length relative to inc

In connection with the clinical observation of their five patients suffering from AE the authors summarize current questions related to this disease. They examined the function of the cellular immunity in this disease. They call attention to dangers of oxychinoline treatment, and to benefits of zinc administration. They established that the introduction of zinc therapy indicates a progress in the treatment of AE.

Good Syndrome is a rare form of immunodeficiency occurring in conjunction with thymoma. It is known to be associated with haematological manifestations, primarily pure red cell aplasia but more rarely aplastic anaemia and thrombocytopenia. We report a 61-year-old man with type AB thymoma, Good syndrome and severe pancytopenia undergoing sternotomy and thymectomy. Due to its rarity and often delayed presentation or diagnosis, case reports detailing peri-operative management are limited. This case highlights the complexity of perioperative management in Good syndrome and we detail the patient's
