Potential relationship between cytomegalovirus and immunosenescence: Evidence from observational studies.

Immunosenescence (IS) occurs as a natural outcome of ageing and may be described as a decline in immune system flexibility and adaptability to sufficiently respond to new, foreign antigens. Potential factors that may precipitate IS include persistent herpesvirus infections, such as cytomegalovirus (CMV). Here, we conducted a review of the literature evaluating the potential association between CMV and IS. Twenty-seven epidemiologic studies that included direct comparisons between CMV-seropositive and CMV-seronegative immunocompetent individuals were analysed. The majority of these studies (n =

Accuracy of a point-of-care major crossmatch test and risk factors for major crossmatch incompatibility in cats.

Major crossmatch testing can help identify immunologic incompatibilities between blood donors and recipients; however, there are limited studies describing the accuracy of point-of-care crossmatch tests. The first aim of this study was to determine if a gel-based, point-of-care major crossmatch method (GEL-CM), without antiglobulin-enhancement, could accurately detect compatible and incompatible donor-recipient pairings, using an antiglobulin-enhanced laboratory-based major crossmatch method (LAB-CM) as the reference standard. The second aim was to describe the incidence of, and risk factors f

Stem cell therapies in post-prostatectomy erectile dysfunction: a critical review.

INTRODUCTION: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is still a common complication of radical prostatectomy. Current treatments of ED are mainly symptomatic. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been widely investigated as a potential curative treatment. Although MSC therapy consistently improved erectile functions in the pre-clinical studies the initial expectations seem to be unmet. The aim of this study is to critically review the existing studies on use of stem cells in post-prostatectomy ED and understand factors that preclude clinical translation of the available evidence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A li

Antibody-Based Correlates of Protection Against Cholera Analysis of a Challenge Study in a Cholera-Naïve Population.

Immunologic correlates of protection can be used to infer vaccine efficacy for populations in which challenge trials or field studies are infeasible. In a recent cholera challenge trial (WH Cohen et al, Clinical Infectious Disease 62: 1329-1335, 2016), 134 North American cholera-naïve volunteers were randomized to receive either the live, attenuated single-dose cholera vaccine CVD 103-HgR or placebo, and titers of vibriocidal antibodies against classical Inaba were assessed 10 days after treatment. Subsequent to the immunologic evaluation, each subject ingested a fixed quantity of virulent V.

Assessment of urine solute and matrix effects on the performance of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for measurement of interleukin-6 in dog urine.

Measurement of cytokine concentrations within body fluids is a means of recognizing subclinical and/or unresolved, infectious and inflammatory states in patients. In the urinary tract, such information may be useful for identifying patients with pyelonephritis, asymptomatic bacteriuria, recurrent infections, and cystitis. One such cytokine, interleukin-6 (IL-6), is recognized as a primary cytokine that is produced following exposure of the urothelium to bacterial virulence factors. Complicating reliable testing for this and other cytokines is the nature of urine itself. Urine varies widely in

Immunologic response to fungus is not universally associated with rhinosinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: Immunologic response to fungal antigens has been cited as an etiologic factor in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Previous work demonstrated a significant cytokine response in CRS patients that did not correlate with an immunoglobulin E (IgE) response. This study was performed in an effort to replicate these findings in a more geographically diverse population. DESIGN: Prospective in vitro study. SETTING: Two academic tertiary rhinologic practices in Texas and Utah. METHODS: Serum and peripheral blood monocytes (PBMC) were obtained from 10 CRS patients and seven controls. Total IgE

Managing paraneoplastic neurological disorders.

Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) are remote effects of cancer that are not caused by invasion of the tumor or its metastases. Immunologic factors appear important in the pathogenesis of PNS because antineuronal autoantibodies and T-cell responses against nervous system antigens have been defined for many of these disorders. The immunologic response is elicited by the ectopic expression of neuronal antigens by the tumor. Expression of these so-called "onconeural" antigens is limited to the tumor and the nervous system and sometimes also the testis. At the time of presentation of the …

[Efficacy and safety of zidovudine in monotherapy in patients with HIV infection].

BACKGROUND: To study the efficacy and the tolerance of the zidovudine (ZDV) in monotherapy for the treatment of a cohort of patients with HIV infection, most of them injection-drug users (IDU). METHODS: Retrospective study of a historic cohort of 350 patients, from January 1988 to December 1994. The clinic progression, the immunologic deterioriation and the survival after the ZDV administration were evaluated, like the toxicity of the drug. RESULTS: The estimated progression time to AIDS for the 25% of the cohort was 29 months for the initially asymptomatic patients and 22 months for the sub

Transmission of human immunodeficiency virus to sexual partners of hemophiliacs.

To examine the variables associated with heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), we studied 32 couples in our hemophilia center who had steady sexual relationships for periods more than 1 year. Of the 32 sexual partners of the hemophiliacs, five (15.6%) were HIV seropositive. All five hemophiliacs with HIV transmission to their sexual partners had measurable immunologic deficiencies, as shown by their lower median T-helper (CD-4+) lymphocyte count of 172 cells/mm3. The hemophiliacs without transmission had a slightly higher median CD-4+ count of 297 cells/mm3 (P = .26)

Ten-year observation of patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome: Initial presenting characteristics and the associated outcomes.

AIM/INTRODUCTION: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a prototypical systemic autoimmune disease that manifests with various signs and symptoms. Although some studies have examined these manifestations over the long-term course of the disease, the association between initial clinical and immunological factors and subsequent long-term manifestations has not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study is to identify initial clinical and immunological factors associated with subsequent manifestations in patients with pSS. METHOD: A retrospective review was performed in pSS patients who were fol

Anti-phospholipid antibodies and other immunological causes of recurrent foetal loss--a review of literature of various therapeutic protocols.

PROBLEM: An immune-based aetiology is one of the several accepted causes for recurrent foetal loss (RFL). However, most of the immunological theories have not fulfilled the criteria for causality. This is a review of the various immunological causes of RFL and the outcome of different treatment protocols. METHOD OF STUDY: Both auto- and alloimmune maternal immunological abnormalities have been proposed to account for foetal loss. Among the autoimmune factors, anti-phospholipid antibodies (APAs) have been demonstrated to be the strongest risk factors for foetal loss, the prevalence of which is

Periodontitis and stroke.

There are various forms of periodontitis characterised as an inflammatory disease with more or less expressed alteration of genetic immunological components and associated with local as well as psycho-social factors. Presence of chronic destructive inflammation in the mouth - a region with rich blood supply, contributes to escape of bacteria, their virulent factors and various pro-inflammatory cells, cytokines and immunologically active substances into the blood stream and their subsequent penetration into different organs and tissues, where they continue in their harmful destruction. Predictors of definite and possible infective endocarditis in children with bacteremia: a reginal cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Infective endocarditis (IE) in children is rare but potentially severe. Unlike adults, no pediatric-specific guidelines exist to guide echocardiography in children with bacteremia. We aimed to identify risk factors for IE in pediatric bacteremia and propose a selective, risk-based approach to echocardiographic evaluation. An 8-year prospective surveillance included all children (0-18 years) hospitalized with true bacteremia at Soroka University Medical Center between 2015 and 2022. A bacteremia episode was defined as the growth of a single organism during hospitalization. Episodes

HLA-B*57 and IFNL4-related polymorphisms are associated with protection against HIV-1 disease progression in controllers.

BACKGROUND: HIV-1-controllers maintain HIV-1 viremia at low levels (normally <2000 HIV-RNA copies/mL) without antiretroviral treatment. However, some HIV-1-controllers have evidence of immunologic progression with marked CD4+T-cell decline. We investigated host genetic factors associated with protection against CD4+T-cell loss in HIV-1-controllers. METHODS: We analysed the association of interferon lambda 4 (IFNL4)-related polymorphisms and HLA-B haplotypes within Long Term Non-Progressor HIV-1-controllers ((LTNP-C), defined by maintaining CD4+T-cells counts >500 cells/mm3 for more than 7 yea

Non-immune interventions to protect kidney allografts in the long term.

Chronic rejection, the primary cause of late renal allograft loss, results from a complex interplay between immunological and non-immunological factors. During the past few decades, transplant research has focused almost exclusively on identifying more powerful and minimally toxic immunosuppressive strategies to prevent acute rejection and alloimmune response toward the graft, whereas poor attention has been paid to non-immunological factors. However, the discrepancy between remarkable improvements in the prevention of acute rejection and failure to ameliorate long-term graft outcomes suggests

Immune problems in central nervous system cell therapy.

Transplantation of cells and tissues to the mammalian brain and CNS has revived the interest in the immunological status of brain and its response to grafted tissue. The previously held view that the brain was an absolute "immunologically privileged site" allowing indefinite survival without rejection of grafts of cells has proven to be wrong. Thus, the brain should be regarded as a site where immune responses can occur, albeit in a modified form, and under certain circumstances these are as vigorous as those seen in other peripheral sites. Clinical cell transplant trials have now been perform

Trawling the depths of gene regulation: transcription-factor families orchestrating immunity in teleost fish.

Transcription factors act as central regulators of immune responses by integrating signals from immunological pathways and translating them into cell type-specific gene-expression programmes. Dynamic networks of transcription factors and co-factors control the activation, polarisation and functional specialisation of immune cells, thereby coordinating the magnitude, timing and specificity of responses to pathogenic stimuli whilst promoting the restoration of homeostasis. Although immune-relevant transcription factors have been extensively studied in mammals, the molecular principles governing

Immunological abnormalities in juvenile myelomonocytic leukaemia.

Immunological studies were performed on 24 children suffering from juvenile myelomonocytic leukaemia. Strikingly high serum immunoglobulin levels with a frequent tendency towards homogeneity and light-chain imbalance were present, together with a high incidence of antinuclear antibodies (52%) and antihuman IgG antibodies (43%). Members of the families of 19 of the children were also studied. A few similar abnormalities were found in eight families, mostly clustered in four of them. The significance of the association of these immunological aberrations with juvenile myelomonocytic leukaemia is

[A system of individual immunotherapy with leakadin in the combined therapy of acoustic neurinomas].

Analyzing the immunological responsiveness of patients with acoustic neurinomas on the antitumor immunomodulator leacadin has revealed some significant features. In leacadin-treated patients, postimmunotherapy promotes the formation of high sanogenetic responses: an increase in the rigidity of the brain-immune system; elevations of the levels of antitumor factors of the immune system: T helper cells and locally synthesized antibodies; a decrease in neuro-sensitization after tumor removal, which prevents tumor stimulation and recurrence; an indirect reduction in the activity of T suppressors th
