Evidence-based primary care treatment guidelines for skin infections in Europe: a comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Europe, most antibiotics for human use are prescribed in primary care. Incorporating resistance data into treatment guideline … tional origin. RESULTS: Guidelines were included regarding common skin infections in primary care: Impetigo, Cellulitis, Erysipelas, Folliculitis and Furuncle. RESULTS showed a high agreement across Europe: all recommended antibiotics are of the beta-lactam class and mainly in the small spectrum. The advised treatment durations are consistent; the dosages …

Occupational acquisition of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in humans--a description of MRSA carrier and infected cases from the Region of North Jutland in Denmark.

Since 2006 in Denmark, there has been a statutory order on physicians' notification of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). O … public hospitals. Most occupational cases were carriers (n=15; 83%). Three were infected, two with impetigo and one with tonsillitis; CC398 was the causative agent in all three cases. CC398 has a porcine reservoir which is huge in Denmark with a total annual production of 27,700,000 pigs. The presented population-based retrospective study shows an infecti …

Acrodermatitis enteropathica: an uncommon differential diagnosis in childhood - first description of a new sequence variant.

An 11-month-old boy was brought to our clinic with superinfected, sharply-defined, symmetrical, erythematous macules and vesicles, some with yellowish-brownish crusts, on the cheeks, fingers, and in the diaper region. The suspected impetigo contagiosa had failed to respond to both topical antiseptic therapy and systemic antibiotics. Because of the unusual clinical picture and course, we measured the serum zinc level. A significantly reduced level of 2 μmol/l (normal range 9.2-18.4 μmol/l) was identified. Initial skin lesions had appeared one week after weaning (5th week after birth). Since the…

Scabies and risk of skin sores in remote Australian Aboriginal communities: A self-controlled case series study.

BACKGROUND: Skin sores caused by Group A streptococcus (GAS) infection are a major public health problem in remote Aboriginal communities. Skin sores are often associated with scabies, which is evident in scabies intervention programs where a significant reduction of skin sores is seen after focusing solely on scabies control. Our study quantifies the strength of association between skin sores and scabies among Aboriginal children from the East Arnhem region in the Northern Territory. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pre-existing datasets from three published studies, which were conducted as part of the

Comparison of serotyping, ribotyping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for distinguishing group A Streptococcus strains isolated in Albania.

Conventional serotyping for T antigens, rRNA gene restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (ribotyping) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis were compared for distinguishing among group A streptococci isolated in Albania between 1980-1982 and in 1995. A total of twelve serotypes were identified among seventy GAS strains. Ribotyping revealed eight and eleven distinct patterns after digestion with HindIII and PvuII, respectively. Twenty-three strains of serotype T12 were subdivided in 10 ribotypes and 11 strains of T2 serotype were differentiated in 5 ribotypes. By comparison, PFGE gene

Rationale for topical antibiotics.

Topical antibiotics are under attack by critics who claim that no proof of efficacy exists and that systemic administration is far more effective. In this paper, we review the existing evidence and conclude that topical antibiotics have a place in the prevention and treatment of superficial skin infections. Our own experimental studies showed that topical antibiotics promptly reduce the density of Staphylococcus aureus in secondarily infected chronic dermatoses, associated with clinical improvement. In addition, topical antibiotics were shown to be highly effective in preventing and suppressin

Recent Scientific Advancements towards a Vaccine against Group A Streptococcus.

Group A Streptococcus (GAS), or Streptococcus pyogenes, is a gram-positive bacterium that extensively colonises within the human host. GAS is responsible for causing a range of human infections, such as pharyngitis, impetigo, scarlet fever, septicemia, and necrotising fasciitis. GAS pathogens have the potential to elicit fatal autoimmune sequelae diseases (including rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart diseases) due to recurrent GAS infections, leading to high morbidity and mortality of young children and the elderly worldwide. Antibiotic drugs are the primary method of controlling and treating…

Research opportunities for the primordial prevention of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease-streptococcal vaccine development: a national heart, lung and blood institute workshop report.

Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as group A streptococcus (StrepA), is a bacterium that causes a range of human diseases, including pharyngitis, impetigo, invasive infections, and post-infection immune sequelae such as rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. StrepA infections cause some of the highest burden of disease and death in mostly young populations in low-resource settings. Despite decades of effort, there is still no licensed StrepA vaccine, which if developed, could be a cost-effective way to reduce the incidence of disease. Several challenges, including technical and regulato…

Research opportunities for the primary prevention and management of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease: a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute workshop report.

Primary prevention of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) encompasses the timely diagnosis and adequate treatment of the superficial group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections pharyngitis and impetigo. GAS is the only known inciting agent in the pathophysiology of the disease. However, sufficient evidence indicates that the uptake and delivery of primary prevention approaches in RHD-endemic regions are significantly suboptimal. This report presents expert deliberations on priority research and implementation opportunities for primary prevention of ARF/RHD that were develo…

Spectrum of skin diseases in Maroon villages of the Maroni area, French Guiana.

BACKGROUND: Due to their genetic characteristics and their high exposure to infectious diseases, Maroons are likely to suffer from a specifi … 8%) and bites/envenomations (4.6%). The three most frequent conditions were scabies, abscesses, and impetigo. Besides scabies, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) were still prevalent as we reported 13 cases of leprosy and 63 cutaneous leishmaniasis. Atopic dermatitis (AD) represented only 2.5% of our diagnoses. CONCLUSIONS: With the exception of AD, which …

Retrospective study on the safety and tolerability of clinical treatments with a novel Thermomechanical Ablation device on 150 patients.

INTRODUCTION: There are currently not many publications on the safety of thermomechanical ablation (TMA) devices, and those that are publish … up after 2 days. There were four reported complications: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (n=2), impetigo (n=1), and dermatitis (n=1). CONCLUSIONS: Using the TMA device in the treatment of photodamage and acne scarring is safe in skin types I to V and has a low incidence of temporary side effects with no permanent side effects.
