We immobilized a hemicyanine dye, Di-8-ANEPPS, in ordered thin films of an organic matrix, dihexadecyl phosphate (DHP), and we transferred the mixed monolayers onto solid support by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. We used gold and quartz slides and indium tin oxide (ITO) evaporated on glass slides as substrates. The multilayers formation was confirmed by ellipsometric and contact angle measurements. The optical response of the nanostructures was investigated collecting UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission intensity profiles.

A poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) film was modified on an indium-tin oxide electrode in order to immobilize bacterial luciferase (BL) on the electrode surface. In this chapter, we describe standardized protocols for the self-assembly of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) from liposomes with lipid compositions mimicking eukaryote and prokaryote cell membranes. Such SLBs can also contain lipids with polymeric and glycosylated headgroups. Furthermore, we present protocols on how to manipulate the adsorption and desorption of membranes on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, which allows for the creation of patterned and in situ regenerated SLB arrays that can be used to study electrochemically mediated membrane processes in a microarray format.

A novel label-free photoelectrochemical biosensing method for highly sensitive and specific detection of DNA hybridization using a CdS quantum dot (QD)-dendrimer nanocomposite is presented. Highly luminescent CdSe/CdS core-shell nanocrystals have been assembled on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates using a wet synthesis route. The physical properties of the quantum dots (QD) have been investigated using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and optical absorption spectroscopy techniques. These quantum dots showed a strong enhancement in the near band edge absorption. The in situ luminescence behavior has been interpreted in the light of the quantum confinement effect and induced strain in the core-shell structure.

Electrochromic properties of spun films of bis[octakis(hexylthio)phthalocyaninato] dysprosium(III) were investigated for determining nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydride (NADH) in water solutions. A spin-coated film deposited on indium tin oxide electrode displays only one redox couple (at E1/2=0.78V). The films of [(C6H13S)8Pc]2Dy were modified chemically or electrochemically for the detection of reduced NADH in water solution. The modified film in the oxidized ([(C6H13S)8Pc]2Dy)+ form is believed to be reduced to its neutral form on interaction with NADH.

A kind of electronic ink, which is supported on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass before polymerization, is prepared using urea and formaldehyde resin as wall materials, in which TiO(2) modified with PMMA are dispersed in tetrachloroethylene (TCE) using a mixture of oil blue dyes and charge control additive (span80). Rotary viscometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and optical microscopy are used to characterize the particles, respectively. The electrophoretic mobility of the microcapsules to electric field is also investigated with two parallel electrodes.

We have devised a new surgical procedure for the repair of funnel chest deformity, which we have used in 148 of our 154 patients. The procedure involves resection of the deformed thoracic wall, including ribs and sternum, rib-sternal turnover, and anastomosis of the internal thoracic artery and veins. Several preoperative and postoperative examinations, such as bone biopsy, sternal puncture and indium chloride test, revealed definite signs of living tissue. This procedure results in minimal secondary deformity postoperatively and is indicated for adults as well as children.

Cadmium-free and NIR fluorescent QDs are promising candidates for bio-application. Thus, we present the synthesis of ternary ZnCuInS2/ZnS (ZCIS/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) where the molar variation of Cu/Zn of the precursors was used to tune the optical and structural properties. Iodination of arene-containing natural products employing N-iodosuccinimide catalyzed by In(OTf)(3) at ambient temperature is reported as a versatile and mild method for natural product derivatization amenable to small scale. A wandering spleen is a rare condition characterized by splenic malposition due to congenital maldevelopment or laxity of the supporting ligamentous structures that usually fixate the anatomical position of the spleen. The diagnosis is often difficult to make clinically. In this report, a case is described in which an In-111 oxime labeled leukocyte scan was helpful in making a diagnosis of a wandering spleen.

By means of 99mtechnetium diphosphonate and a scintillation camera we measured the deposition of aerosols. During normal breathing rhythm and without leading the aerosol by valves the retention in the lower airways was on an average of 5.6%, that is 0.07 ml/min. By installation of suitable valves for in- and expiration and mouth tubes, deep and complete expiration with breath holding the retention of the aerosol increases to 17.3-13.8% (0.22-0.17 ml/min); with normal breathing the deposition was only 9%. This work depicts an electrochemical hydrogel-eutectic gallium indium alloy interface for the detection of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus. This interface allows recording of nonlinear current-voltage responses, depending on the composition of the hydrogel. The current-voltage data for the machine learning model are trained by a multilayer perceptron. Coherent and directional emission at 1.55 μm from a PbSe colloidal quantum dot electroluminescent device on silicon is demonstrated.
