The primary purpose of this study was to determine the individual, family, and peer factors that correlate with adolescent gambling. High school students from three states ( N = 1,846) completed an anonymous questionnaire assessing the behavior of themselves, their parents, and their peers. Participants also reported on their gambling behavior via the SOGS-RA, which was used to create five adolescent gambling groups (i.e., Non-Gamblers, Non-Problem Gamblers, At-Risk Gamblers, Problem Gamblers, and Probable Pathological Gamblers). In a discriminant function analysis using demographic, individua

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder stones are common in the developed world. Complications of gallstones contribute substantially to healthcare costs and may be life threatening. The identification of individuals likely to develop complications would be of benefit in clinical practice as elective cholecystectomy could then be performed.
METHODS: Seven hundred and thirty-nine subjects aged 35-85 years from the general population were screened for gallbladder problems by ultrasonography and questionnaire assessment of putative risk factors and digestive symptoms. Gallstones, cholesterolosis or sludge in t

Williams Syndrome (WS), a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder, is characterized by peaks and valleys in mental function: substantial impairments in cognitive domains such as reasoning, arithmetic ability, and spatial cognition, alongside relatively preserved skills in social domains, face processing, language, and music. We report the results of a comprehensive survey on musical behaviors and background administered to the largest sample of individuals with WS to date (n = 118, mean age = 20.4), and compare the results to those obtained from a control group of typically developing normal indiv

The authors examined the suppression of spider-related thoughts in spider-fearful (n = 23) and nonfearful (n = 22) individuals. Participants were primed with vivid pictures of spiders and a story about spiders. Next, they were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 conditions: (a) suppression of thoughts associated with the previously presented spider-related stimuli or (b) free expression of any thoughts, including those related to the spider-related stimuli. All participants completed a subsequent free-expression exercise. Results indicated that spider-fearful individuals expressed thoughts about the s

Individual animals and humans show differing susceptibility to noise damage even under very carefully controlled exposure conditions. This difference in susceptibility may be related to unknown genetic components. Common experimental animals (rats, guinea pigs, chinchillas, cats) are outbred-their genomes contain an admixture of many genes. Many mouse strains have been inbred over many generations reducing individual variability, making them ideal candidates for studying the genetic modulation of individual susceptibility. Erway et al. (1993) demonstrated a recessive gene associated with early

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Recent evidence suggests that chronic or latent viral infection may be an important predisposing factor in the development of COPD among smokers. As such, understanding if HIV-seropositive smokers are at heightened risk for respiratory symptoms may have relevance with regard to COPD pathogenesis. The current study was done to systematically identify the prevalence of respiratory symptoms among an HIV-seropositive population and to identify associated clinical features.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional analysis at an academic medical center.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the characteristics of smoking addiction in a group of pregnant women, to evaluate the efficacy of medical counseling tailored to the patient's stage in the cessation process and to examine factors that might affect the ability of a woman to quit smoking during pregnancy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred sixteen women (mean age 29.71 5.44 years; range 15-41) were referred by obstetricians to a respiratory medicine specialist if they continued smoking after being advised to quit. The information each woman received was appropriate to her stage in the cessation process

HYPOTHESIS: The goal of this study was to compare the results of vestibular testing in individuals with motion sickness to a group of control subjects.
BACKGROUND: Studying motion sickness is difficult, because no animal model has been developed and symptoms rarely occur outside motion environments. Tests that can be performed in normal laboratory settings, which help to identify individuals with motion sickness, may be valuable in characterizing this disorder.
METHODS: Twenty active duty military individuals with well-documented motion sickness were tested. The test battery included sinusoi

The aim of the study was to determine the efficacy of an individual treatment schedule in patients with systemic vasculitis. Clinical, laboratory, morphological and immunological data before and after treatment were followed in 18 patients: eight with microscopic polyangiitis, two with Wegener's granulomatosis, four with leukocytoclastic vasculitis and four with necrotizing/crescentic glomerulonephritis. Patients received individual treatment for 14.89+/-13.9 months according to the disease activity. Methylprednisolone pulse therapy (PT) was given to 16 patients, mean 1.94+/-0.4 PT/patient, fo

Essential tremor (ET) is the most common type of movement disorder, although its etiology and neurophysiological substrates remain unclear. While thought to be a benign condition, it has yet to be studied from a neuropsychological perspective. We examined the neurocognitive functioning of 13 nondemented subjects with severe ET, including aspects of memory, cognitive flexibility, and attention. Results revealed that 12/13 subjects demonstrated impairment on 1 or more cognitive measures in comparison with published normative data. The pattern of findings was suggestive of relative dysfunction of

Factors that affect the resistance rates for an organism-drug combination in a given hospital also might influence resistance rates for other organism-drug combinations. We examined correlations between resistance prevalence in non-intensive care inpatient areas of 41 hospitals participating in phase 3 (1998-1999) of Project ICARE (Intensive Care Antimicrobial Resistance Epidemiology). We focused on statistically significant (P<.05) Pearson correlation coefficients for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, and resistanc

Sickle cell disorders, such as Hb SS and Hb SC, are associated with a hypercoagulable state that may contribute to the vaso-occlusive episodes observed in the disorders. To what extent increased coagulation activity occurs in individuals with sickle cell trait has had limited study. Because such information may help clarify clinical and pathologic findings that may occur in these individuals and may be useful in clarifying the hypercoagulable state in sickle cell disease, we have examined individuals with Hb AS to determine the extent that increased coagulation activity does occur. We measured

The fresh outbreak of allergies and especially that increasingly early for food or even for new pneumallergens (sensitization already in utero) pushes us to test increasingly various and many allergens in children. The insufficiency of compliance of certain children to allergic skin tests encouraged us to seek new diagnostic methods. In our office we developed a new method of diagnosis by multipuncture, individualized and easily adaptable to each child. It is about a fast and reproductible prick-test which avoids stains and smudges due to the application of drops directly on the skin. It makes

OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to determine whether hostility is differentially related to measures of glucose metabolism in African-Americans and Caucasians.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The relationship of hostility, as measured by a subset of the Cook-Medley hostility scale (CMHOST) inventory items, to various parameters of glucose metabolism were examined in a young, healthy sample of male and female African-American and Caucasian volunteers. Fasting blood samples were collected during an inpatient admission, at which time the CMHOST was also administered.
RESULTS: In the enti
