A method was developed for assessing indirectly the fecal excretion of carbohydrate-derived energy. Then, eight healthy premature infants (28 to 32 wk gestation, postnatal age 12 to 30 days) were randomly assigned to receive one of two formulas that differed only in the carbohydrate source: 100% lactose or 50% lactose: 50% glucose polymer (lactose + glucose polymer). Excreta collections were analyzed for total nitrogen, urea nitrogen, ammonia, fat, and total energy. Carbohydrate energy absorption was calculated. The formulas were well tolerated and stool frequency, energy intake, weight gain,

CONTEXT: Studies have suggested that human milk feeding decreases the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP); however, conflicting results have been reported.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this meta-analysis was to pool currently available data on incidence of ROP in infants fed human milk versus formula.
DATA SOURCES: Medline, PubMed, and EBSCO were searched for articles published through February 2015.
STUDY SELECTION: Longitudinal studies comparing the incidence of ROP in infants who were fed human milk and formula were selected. Studies involving donor milk were not included.

Background: Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk of many complications, which is a main public health problem worldwide with social and economic consequences. Human milk from breast feeding has been proved to be the optimal nutrition strategy for preterm infants when available. However, the lack of human milk from mothers makes formula widely used in clinical practice. In recent years, donated breast milk has gained popularity as an alternative choice which can provide human milk oligosaccharides and other bioactive substances. Objective: We aimed to conduct a systematic review a

This study prospectively evaluated 35 consecutive infants who presented with fresh blood mixed with stools. The mean age at onset of bleeding was approximately 4 weeks. All infants were otherwise asymptomatic and exhibited normal growth and physical examinations. None had evidence of a bleeding diathesis, viral or bacterial enteritis, or necrotizing enterocolitis. Consent for limited colonoscopy and biopsy was obtained for 34 infants. Twenty-five had macroscopic colitis and 10 infants had marked nodular lymphoid hyperplasia. Thirty-one infants had histopathological evidence of colitis characte

BACKGROUND: The benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for infant health outcomes have been widely reported; however, its association with infant colic remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine whether exclusive breastfeeding is associated with lower odds of infant colic.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE via OVID, EMB Reviews, Embase, MIDIRS, and Global Health for relevant publications up to March 8, 2026. We included observational studies reporting infant colic among exclusively breastfed infants compared with infants receiving other types of feeding (mixed feeding,

In 45 prematures and small for date-infants weighing more than 1750 g a special formula (Meb) was compared with pooled human milk. Weight gain during feeding human milk occurred more slow that during feeding special formula. This may be due to the different protein- and mineral-intake, while the amounts of calories were similar. Differences of blood-glucose, total bilirubin, beta-cholesterol and of one protein-fraction (alpha-2-globulin) could be statistically as certained. No difference resulted in hemoglobin, red blood cell count, hematocrit, total cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids,

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of early human milk (HM) feeding on the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) among very low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants.
METHODS: Observational cohort research in a Level III neonatal intensive care unit. A total of 186 infants were enrolled in this pre-post cohort study (114 infants were included in the HM-fed group and 72 in the formula-fed group). ROP, type of feeding (early exclusive HM versus any formula), and potential confounding variables were measured. Differences between groups were explored.
RESULTS: The clinical characteristics of the ne

The Belgrade-Munich Infant Milk Trial (BeMIM) randomized healthy term infants into either a protein-reduced intervention infant formula (IF) group, with an α-lactalbumin-enriched whey and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, or a control infant formula (CF) group. A non-randomized breastfed group (BF) was studied for reference. We assessed the long-term effects of these infant feeding choices on growth measures until the age of seven years. Weight, standing height, head circumference, and percent body fat (using skinfolds and bioelectrical impedance) were determined with standardized method…

BACKGROUND: Proper infant nutrition promotes healthy growth and development and lowers the risk of disease in later life.
METHODS: This review is based on pertinent articles retrieved by a selective search, including guidelines, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews.
RESULTS: Infants should be exclusively breast-fed until at least the age of 4 months. Infants who are no longer being breast-fed, or no longer exclusively so, should be given commercially available low-protein infant formula containing long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Infants with a family history of allergy should be fed…

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and the World Health Organization recommend that infants receive only breast milk or formula for the first 4 to 6 months of life, followed by the introduction of complementary foods. Despite these recommendations, many infants, particularly those with adolescent mothers, receive solid foods (often cereal mixed with formula in a bottle) and liquids other than formula or breast milk in the first few weeks of life. Decisions on early feeding are often guided by grandm

The impact of breastfeeding on respiratory health is uncertain, particularly when the mother has asthma. We examined the association of breastfeeding and wheezing in the first year of life.We studied 2773 infants from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) birth cohort. Caregivers reported on infant feeding and wheezing episodes at 3, 6 and 12 months. Breastfeeding was classified as exclusive, partial (supplemented with formula or complementary foods) or none.Overall, 21% of mothers had asthma, 46% breastfed for at least 12 months and 21% of infants experienced wheezing.

The prevalence of atopic diseases is increasing worldwide for reasons that are not clear. Food allergies are the earliest manifestations of atopy. This review defines the foods most commonly involved in allergic reactions and identifies an emerging group of syndromes in which food allergy is involved. A study of the frequency of food allergies in Australia and South-East Asia has recently shown that egg, cow's milk and peanut are the most common food allergens in Australia, but there were divergent results from different regions of South-East Asia. It is not clear whether the differences in re

BACKGROUND: Little is known about brain temperature of neonates during MRI. Brain temperature can be estimated non-invasively with proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-MRS), but the most accurate 1H-MRS method has not yet been determined. The primary aim was to estimate brain temperature using 1H-MRS in infants with neonatal encephalopathy (NE) following perinatal asphyxia. The secondary aim was to compare brain temperature during MRI with rectal temperatures before and after MRI.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, brain temperature in 36 (near-)term infants with NE was estimated usi

Candida albicans, a pathogenic fungus implicated in early childhood caries (ECC), plays a crucial role in oral health. While its colonization usually begins at birth, the extent of maternal involvement in yeast transmission to their offspring, particularly across different racial groups, remains unclear. Studies have shown elevated levels of C. albicans in both mothers and children, with genetically related fungal strains, suggesting maternal transmission, but the racial component, notably higher levels in Black children, lacks thorough investigation of underlying factors. Our research aimed t

Among 1138 newborns in a Level II nursery, breast-fed and formula-fed infants were comparable in terms of sex, mode of delivery, gestational age, birth weight, and birth temperature. Breast-fed neonates subsequently lost more weight and a greater percentage of their birth weight (mean, 7.4% vs. 4.9%) than did formula-fed infants. Loss of more than 10 percent of birth weight was associated with short gestation and low birth weight and with breast feeding. Birth weight loss of greater than or equal to 3 percent was associated with a risk of fever (greater than or equal to 37.5 degrees C) among b

UNLABELLED: Objective: To evaluate the nutrition-related effects of prophylactic Lactobacillus acidophilus/Bifidobacterium infantis probiotics on the outcomes of preterm infants <29 weeks of gestation that receive human milk and/or formula nutrition. We hypothesize that human-milk-fed infants benefit from probiotics in terms of sepsis prevention and growth.
METHODS: We performed an observational study of the German Neonatal Network (GNN) over a period of six years, between 1 January, 2013 and 31 December, 2018. Prophylactic probiotic use of L. acidophilus/B. infantis was evaluated in preterm
