Public health management of an outbreak of group C meningococcal disease in university campus residents.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of outbreaks of Group C meningococcal disease in teenagers and young adults led to a new policy in the UK in 1999 of vaccinating all new college students. The largest of these outbreaks involved seven students in one university, six of whom were from one hall of residence, and two of whom died. METHODS: Control of the outbreak involved close medical surveillance of resident students, mass chemoprophylaxis and vaccination, and wide dissemination of daily information bulletins. Investigation of the epidemiology of the outbreak involved searching for the network of

Confirmatory bias in health decisions: Evidence from the MMR-autism controversy.

Since Wakefield et al. (1998), the public was exposed to mixed information surrounding the claim that measles-mumps-rubella vaccine causes autism. A persistent trend to delay the vaccination during 1998-2011 in the US was driven by children of college-educated mothers, suggesting that these mothers held biases against the vaccine influenced by the early unfounded claim. Consistent with confirmatory bias, exposures to negative information about the vaccine strengthened their biases more than exposures to positive information attenuated them. Positive online information, however, had strong impa

Translating one health research evidence into action: co-production of rabies control knowledge in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Translating research evidence into practice has become a priority for academics, funders and public institutions worldwide. However, many research projects still lack strategies and funds for policy-related research translation, innovation, dissemination and uptake activities. This study focuses on research evidence on rabies produced by Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d'Ivoire under GAVI's project. It aims to (i) identify the mechanism used by researchers to share evidence with practitioners, policy makers and local communities and to (ii) identify what facilitat

The Association of Psychological Factors With Willingness to Share Health-Related Data From Technological Devices: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: Health-related data from technological devices are increasingly obtained through smartphone apps and wearable devices. These data could enable physicians and other care providers to monitor patients outside the clinic or assist individuals in improving lifestyle factors. However, the use of health technology data might be hampered by the reluctance of patients to share personal health technology data because of the privacy sensitivity of this information. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates to what extent psychological factors play a role in people's willingness to share personal h

Usage Trends and Data Sharing Practices of Healthcare Wearable Devices Among US Adults: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Health care wearable devices can transform health care delivery by enabling real-time, continuous monitoring that facilitates early disease detection, personalized treatments, and improved patient engagement. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened awareness of the importance of health technology, accelerating interest in wearables as tools for monitoring health and managing chronic conditions. As we navigate the postpandemic era, understanding the adoption and data-sharing behaviors associated with wearable devices has become increasingly critical. Despite their potential, challenges

An analysis of YouTube videos as educational resources for dental practitioners to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was first reported on 31 December 2019 and has rapidly been spreading day by day. Dental patients and professionals have a high risk of the coronavirus infection and also have a huge responsibility to prevent its spread during emergency dental treatment over the period of the COVID-19 outbreak. AIM: Informing patients and dental practitioners about the novel coronavirus in an accurate and effective way is very important. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the quality of dentistry-related medical information about COVID-19 on YouTube as education

Direct-to-consumer misleading information on cancer risks calls for an urgent clarification of health genetic testing performed by commercial companies.

Direct-to-consumer (DTC) commercial companies offer genetic tests that are presented as allowing individuals the opportunity to increase their capacities to be in charge of their own healthcare managements. DTC companies deny performing medical tests, yet they provide data based on sequencing multigene panel or whole exome. This contradiction allows these companies to escape the requirements of a regulated medical practice that guarantees the quality of the tests, as well as the information and support for tested individuals. Herein, we illustrate the lack of such requirements by analysing the

Reflecting on knowledge translation strategies from global health research projects in Tunisia and the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire.

OBJECTIVES: We describe the knowledge translation strategies in two projects and share lessons learned about knowledge sharing and uptake. METHODS: To generate findings for dissemination: (1) the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire (RCI) project relied on a multiple case study design to document barriers and facilitators to implementing a community-led prevention strategy targeting Ebola virus disease; and (2) the Tunisia project used several designs to assess a mental health training's effectiveness, and a case study design to explore contextual factors that may influence anticipated outcomes. Does a picture speak louder than words? The role of infographics as a concussion education strategy.

Knowledge gaps exist regarding how to best educate audiences about concussion. Knowledge translation (KT) plays a critical role in how information is shared. In the field of concussion, infographics are becoming a popular KT strategy for synthesising and sharing information. Study objectives were to explore how infographics enhance concussion knowledge, infographic use and preferences across various stakeholders, and to determine their utility as a KT strategy. Six infographics were created to provide concussion information in a user-friendly and accessible format. A prospective design using a

Ebola Again Shows the International Health Regulations Are Broken: What Can Be Done Differently to Prepare for the Next Epidemic?

Epidemics are among the greatest threats to humanity, and the International Health Regulations are the world's key legal instrument for addressing this threat. Since their revision in 2005, the IHR have faced two big tests: the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic and the 2014 Ebola epidemic in West Africa. Both exposed major shortcomings of the IHR, and both offered profound lessons for the future. The objective of this Article is twofold. First, we seek to compare the lessons learned from H1N1 and Ebola for reforming the IHR in order to test the hypothesis that they are similar. Second, we seek to e

Analysis of German nutrition brochures for pregnant women with evidence-based patient information criteria.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate nutrition brochures for pregnant women in Germany based on evidence-based patient information (EBPI) criteria. METHODS: Nutrition brochures for pregnant women in Germany were collected. Brochures addressing the risk of salmonellosis, toxoplasmosis or listeriosis were analyzed by two researchers independently. RESULTS: Fifty brochures reporting any information on the risk of infection were analyzed. Most brochures did not include literature citations and only few brochures gave a risk description, predominantly verbally, which usually leads to an overestimation of the a

How soon they forget: changes to beliefs after learning about tobacco.

University students' beliefs about tobacco and nicotine were assessed before an educational intervention aimed at correcting tobacco-related misinformation. Beliefs were again measured immediately after the intervention, and then again after a 2-, 4-, 6-, or 8-week retention interval. Initially, participants showed significantly more accurate beliefs about tobacco than pre-intervention, but this improvement decreased after the retention interval. Results suggest that methods currently used in an attempt to alleviate tobacco misinformation in the public may be effective for short-term, but not

On the need to clarify and disseminate contemporary knowledge of hormone therapy initiated near menopause.

The dramatic change in opinion on postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) following initial reports from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) came about as the 'baby boom' generation of women created the largest population of newly menopausal women in history. That trial of conjugated equine estrogen (CEE) plus medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) focused on outcomes in women starting HT a decade or more after menopause. Yet clinical practice has focused on initiation near menopause. Recent findings in the limited numbers of younger menopausal women in the WHI CEE + MPA trial, and findings in the CEE-

Risk management measures for chemicals: the "COSHH essentials" approach.

"COSHH essentials" was developed in Great Britain to help duty holders comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations. It uses a similar approach to that described in the new European "REACH" Regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals; EC No. 1907/2006 of the European Parliament), insofar as it identifies measures for managing the risk for specified exposure scenarios. It can therefore assist REACH duty holders with the identification and communication of appropriate risk-management measures. The technical basis for COSHH ess

The reporting of theoretical health risks by the media: Canadian newspaper reporting of potential blood transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

BACKGROUND: The media play an important role at the interface of science and policy by communicating scientific information to the public and policy makers. In issues of theoretical risk, in which there is scientific uncertainty, the media's role as disseminators of information is particularly important due to the potential to influence public perception of the severity of the risk. In this article we describe how the Canadian print media reported the theoretical risk of blood transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). METHODS: We searched 3 newspaper databases for articles published by

Cuba's response to the HIV epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Cuba's response to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic has been to conduct mass testing of the population to ascertain seroprevalence, to enforce mandatory relative quarantine of persons testing positive, and to implement educational interventions using media and school-based programs. METHODS: Interview with the Vice-Minister of Health and review of available data. RESULTS: Reports to date show a very low seroprevalence rate without evidence of a widespread epidemic. Sexual contact with foreign-born persons is the primary risk factor. Possible advantages of Cuba's po

Acceptance, Perceived Usefulness, and Data Sharing in Mobile Health Apps Among Patients With Breast Cancer: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) apps promise to enhance patient empowerment, enable real-time health monitoring, and support self-management. Patients with breast cancer stand to benefit particularly from these capabilities, given the demanding pre- and posttreatment procedures they face. However, the effective adoption of these tools is challenged by issues including accessibility, usability limitations, and privacy concerns. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the current usage behavior and attitudes toward mHealth apps among patients with breast cancer in Germany, focusing on ac
