Latent persistence in fMRI dynamics during human memory consolidation.

Human memory consolidation involves the gradual stabilization and reorganization of memory traces over time. Despite numerous empirical and computational accounts emphasizing different aspects of this process, an integrated framework for evaluating consolidation theories against brain data remains limited. We propose a biologically informed, data-driven framework based on Koopman operator analysis to examine latent dynamical structure in fMRI signals associated with memory consolidation. The Koopman framework lifts nonlinear brain dynamics into a linear function space, enabling spectral charac

Prolonged storage of packed red blood cells for blood transfusion.

BACKGROUND: A blood transfusion is an acute intervention, used to address life- and health-threatening conditions on a short-term basis. Packed red blood cells are most often used for blood transfusion. Sometimes blood is transfused after prolonged storage but there is continuing debate as to whether transfusion of 'older' blood is as beneficial as transfusion of 'fresher' blood. OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical benefits and harms of prolonged storage of packed red blood cells, in comparison with fresh, on recipients of blood transfusion. SEARCH METHODS: We ran the search on 1st May 2014.

Smart Paper Technology for maternal and newborn health data in The Gambia: A qualitative study of early implementation.

Many low- and middle-income countries rely on paper-based maternal and child health records that are often incomplete, fragmented, and difficult to use for continuity of care and decision-making. Smart Paper Technology (SPT), a hybrid paper-digital documentation system, has been proposed as a practical alternative to fully electronic medical records in resource-constrained settings. This study explored the early implementation of SPT in maternal and infant health services in The Gambia, focusing on feasibility and acceptability. We conducted a qualitative descriptive implementation evaluation

Detection of spiking motifs of arbitrary length in neural activity using bounded synaptic delays.

In the context of spiking neural networks, the temporal coding hypothesis is increasingly preferred over the rate coding hypothesis due to its advantages in processing speed and energy efficiency. In temporal coding, synaptic delays are crucial for processing signals with precise spike timings, known as spiking motifs. Synaptic delays are however bounded in the brain and can thus be shorter than the duration of a motif. This prevents the use of motif recognition methods that consist of setting heterogeneous delays to synchronize the input spikes on a single output neuron acting as a coincidenc

Enhancing Documentation of Upper Limb Specialist Team Meetings at a Tertiary Trauma Centre.

BACKGROUND: Specialist team meetings play a key role in the management of complex trauma and reconstructive cases, but their impact depends on accurate documentation. Inconsistent or informal record-keeping risks duplication, transcription errors, and loss of critical information, with implications for governance and patient safety. METHODS: A quality improvement project was undertaken in the upper limb specialist team meeting at a tertiary trauma centre. At baseline, outcomes were recorded as PowerPoint slides stored in a shared folder without systematic entry into the electronic patient rec

Metabolism of Neonatal Vitamin A Supplementation: A Systematic Review.

A systematic review was conducted to summarize the absorption, transport, storage, and metabolism of oral neonatal vitamin A supplementation (NVAS). This review focused specifically on the neonatal period (first 28 d of life for humans) to inform guidance by WHO on recommendations related to NVAS. A systematic search of international and regional databases was conducted. Inclusion criteria were human or animal studies that gave oral vitamin A as a single or limited number of doses to apparently healthy neonates. Studies evaluating fortification or food-based approaches, dosing with retinoic ac

Baseline incidence of adverse birth outcomes and infant influenza and pertussis hospitalisations prior to the introduction of influenza and pertussis vaccination in pregnancy: a data linkage study of 78 382 mother-infant pairs, Northern Territory, Australia, 1994-2015.

We conducted probabilistic data linkage of three population datasets for the Northern Territory (NT), Australia, to describe the incidence of preterm births, stillbirths, low birthweight and small for gestational age (SGA) per 1000 NT births; and influenza and pertussis hospitalisations per 1 00 000 NT births in infants <7 months of age, in a pre-maternal vaccination era. The Perinatal Trends dataset (1994-2014) formed the cohort of 78 382 births. Aboriginal mother-infant pairs (37%) had disproportionately higher average annual rates (AR) for all adverse birth outcomes compared to their non

Retrograde amnesia: neither partial nor complete hippocampal lesions in rats result in preferential sparing of remote spatial memory, even after reminding.

Many lesion experiments have provided evidence that the hippocampus plays a time-limited role in memory, consistent with the operation of a systems-level memory consolidation process during which lasting neocortical memory traces become established [see Squire, L. R., Clark, R. E., & Knowlton, B. J. (2001). Retrograde amnesia. Hippocampus 11, 50]. However, large lesions of the hippocampus at different time intervals after acquisition of a watermaze spatial reference memory task have consistently resulted in temporally ungraded retrograde amnesia [Bolhuis, J. J., Stewart, C. A., Forrest, E. M.

A natural history study of pediatric patients with early onset of GM1 gangliosidosis, GM2 gangliosidoses, or gaucher disease type 2 (RETRIEVE).

BACKGROUND: The GM1 and GM2 gangliosidoses and type 2 Gaucher disease (GD2) are inherited lysosomal storage disorders with most cases having symptom onset in infancy and reduced life expectancy. The conditions are rare, and there is therefore a need for accurate and up to date information concerning the disease course and survival to assist in the design of clinical trials. RETRIEVE is a natural history study aiming to: (1) collect data on the survival of patients with early-onset (onset of first neurological manifestation before 24 months of age) GM1, GM2, or GD2; (2) collect data that could

Are dietary plant cell wall polysaccharides key components to prevent/avert breast cancer?

BackgroundPlant cell wall's polysaccharides constitute a fundamental source of energy, influencing voluntary intake and digestibility of food, and also affecting peristalsis and health of the digestive tract in animals and people. Because herbivores are less prone to cancer than meat eaters, over the last decades, different teams have investigated the role of plant polysaccharides in immune system activation.AimIn this work, we examine this research seeking to understand if dietary carbohydrates from plant cell walls can be justifiably considered effective components for preventing breast canc

Ethical and sociocultural challenges in managing dead bodies during epidemics and natural disasters.

BACKGROUND: Catastrophic natural disasters and epidemics claim thousands of lives and have severe and lasting consequences, accompanied by human suffering. The Ebola epidemic of 2014-2016 and the current COVID-19 pandemic have revealed some of the practical and ethical complexities relating to the management of dead bodies. While frontline staff are tasked with saving lives, managing the bodies of those who die remains an under-resourced and overlooked issue, with numerous ethical and practical problems globally. METHODS: This scoping review of literature examines the management of dead bodie

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB may predominantly present with an attenuated clinical phenotype.

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB (MPS IIIB, Sanfilippo syndrome type B) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by deficiency of the enzyme N-acetyl-α-D-glucosaminidase (NAGLU). Information on the natural course of MPS IIIB is scarce but much needed in view of emerging therapies. To improve knowledge on the natural course, data on all 52 MPS IIIB patients ever identified by enzymatic studies in the Netherlands were gathered. Clinical data on 44 patients could be retrieved. Only a small number (n = 9; 21%) presented with a classical MPS III phenotype; all other patients showed a much more attenua

Application of a Natural Language Processing Framework for Data Extraction From Pathology Reports Across Multiple Cancer Types.

BACKGROUND: Pathological reports provide comprehensive insights into the clinical and pathological features of different cancer types. However, extraction of this semi-structured data for research is challenging. To better utilize pathology reports in cancer studies, we developed an efficient natural language processing (NLP) system to automate the extraction of items from pathology reports, facilitating streamlined storage, retrieval, and analysis of clinical data in a centralized database. METHODS: To determine the optimal model for our study, we conducted a comparative analysis of various

How young and old adults listen to and remember speech in noise.

Two experiments using the materials of the Revised Speech Perception in Noise (SPIN-R) Test [Bilger et al., J. Speech Hear. Res. 27, 32-48 (1984)] were conducted to investigate age-related differences in the identification and the recall of sentence-final words heard in a babble background. In experiment 1, the level of the babble was varied to determine psychometric functions (percent correct word identification as a function of S/N ratio) for presbycusics, old adults with near-normal hearing, and young normal-hearing adults, when the sentence-final words were either predictable (high context

New software for computer-assisted dental-data matching in Disaster Victim Identification and long-term missing persons investigations: "DAVID Web".

In 1997 an internally supported but unfunded pilot project at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) Australia led to the development of a computer system which closely mimicked Interpol paperwork for the storage, later retrieval and tentative matching of the many AM and PM dental records that are often needed for rapid Disaster Victim Identification. The program was called "DAVID" (Disaster And Victim IDentification). It combined the skills of the VIFM Information Technology systems manager (VW), an experienced odontologist (JGC) and an expert database designer (JC); all current
