Role of Dissolved Organic Matter in the Release of Chromium from Schwertmannite: Kinetics, Repartition, and Mechanisms.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important factor influencing mineral biogeochemistry, although the role of labile DOM in the release of chromium (Cr) from schwertmannite, a mineral with high surface area, is unclear. In this study, the interaction of DOM with synthetic CrO-schwertmannite was investigated to better understand the potential fate of Cr in high-DOM environments. Minerals and their products were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Experim

Toxicity and efficacy of CdO nanostructures on the MDCK and Caki-2 cells.

This article reports the toxicological effects of synthesized cadmium oxide (CdO) nanostructures via a simple green route using a Polygala tenuifolia root extract on normal and renal tumor cells. First, the formation of cadmium oxide nanostructures were confirmed structurally by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The powder was crystallized in a cubic structure with a space group of Fm-3m. The mean crystallize size was approximately 40 and 44nm from the Scherrer and size-strain plots, respectively. The surface states of the c

Intrinsic flexibility of West Nile virus protease in solution characterized using small-angle X-ray scattering.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus with a rapidly expanding global distribution. Infection can cause severe neurological disease and fatality in humans. Efforts are ongoing to develop antiviral drugs that inhibit the WNV protease, a viral enzyme required for polyprotein processing. Unfortunately, little is known about the solution structure of recombinant WNV protease (NS2B-NS3pro) used for antiviral drug discovery and development, although X-ray crystal structures and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies have provided valuable insights into the interactions between NS2B-

Efficient removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution with Fe@Fe2O3 core-shell nanowires.

The batch removal of Cr(VI) from simulated wastewater with Fe@Fe2O3 core-shell nanowires (FCSNs) was investigated in this study. Itwas found that each gram of the FCSNs could remove 7.78 mg of Cr(VI) from simulated wastewater containing 8.0 mg L(-1) of Cr(VI) with an initial pH of 6.5 at room temperature. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm was applicable to describe the removal processes. Kinetics of the Cr(VI) removal was found to follow pseudo-second-order rate equation. Furthermore, the as-prepared and Cr(VI)-adsorbed FCSNs were carefully examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ener

Free Bubble-Assisted Interfacial Assembly of Amphiphilic NIR-II Small Molecules with Enhanced Fluorescence Brightness.

The second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) holds promise for in vivo bioimaging owing to its inherent advantages such as minimized background autofluorescence, reduced light scattering, and deep tissue penetration. Donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D)-type small molecules have emerged as promising NIR-II fluorescent probes. However, their practical application is severely hindered by low molar extinction coefficients, aggregation-caused quenching, and twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) effects. Herein, a novel free-bubble-assisted assembly strategy to enhance the fluorescence br

Point-of-CARE INFRARED IMAGING for Early Detection and Screening of Oral Cancer.

India accounts for one-third of the global incidence and mortality of oral cancer. The national oral cancer screening program uses Conventional Oral Examination by Primary Healthcare (PHC) workers. This subjective assessment leads to unnecessary referrals to higher centers for biopsy and false negatives due to inappropriate biopsy site selection. Angiogenesis is one of the steps in early carcinogenesis, as solid tumors, such as oral cancers, cannot grow beyond 2-3 mm in diameter without inducing their own blood supply. The increased vascular supply and metabolic rate in malignant cells lead to

Child Presence Detection Algorithm in School Buses Based on Infrared Array.

School buses serve as the primary mode of transportation for children traveling to and from school, and their safety measures represent a critical safeguard for children's lives. Nevertheless, incidents in which children are left unattended on school buses-due to inadequate supervision or the children's own actions-occur with notable frequency and can lead to fatal outcomes. To mitigate or prevent such tragedies, this paper proposes an in-vehicle thermal imaging solution based on infrared array sensors, integrated with a dedicated algorithm to detect whether a child has been left behind in the

Non-contact on-device detection of obstructive sleep apnea from infrared video.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects nearly one billion people worldwide, yet most cases remain undiagnosed because standard testing requires overnight polysomnography, which is costly and inconvenient. Here we show that SlAction, a contact-free, wall-mounted near-infrared (NIR) video system, can estimate the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and detect positional OSA entirely on-device, without attached physiological sensors or cloud-based data transfer. The system was trained and validated on 936 clinical recordings (>5,000 hours) from three hospitals. Motivated by the physiology of respiratory ar

Indium Phosphide Quantum Dots for Near-Infrared Luminescence-Based Bioimaging and Theranostics: From Photophysical Design to Clinical Translation.

Indium phosphide (InP) quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as promising cadmium-free luminescent nanomaterials for near-infrared (NIR) bioimaging and theranostic applications owing to their tunable optical properties, photostability, and improved biocompatibility. This review highlights recent advances in the photophysical engineering of InP QDs, focusing on the mechanisms that govern NIR luminescence, including quantum confinement, excitonic relaxation, defect-state modulation, and band-edge fine-structure effects. The influence of molecular-level surface engineering, such as ligand optimization,

TRPV1 Activation via a Three-Stage Adaptive Heat-Absorbing Hydrogel Drives Neurovascular-Immune Coupling.

Impaired neurovascular-immune coupling severely hampers chronic wound healing. Although the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channel represents a promising therapeutic target, its therapeutic application remains limited by imprecise activation. Here, we developed a three-stage adaptive and heat-absorbing hydrogel (termed HMCG) that enables programmable and localized TRPV1 activation under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. HMCG forms reversible boronate ester bonds between PVA and TSPBA, enabling a sol-aerosol-gel adaptive with sprayable handling, self-adaptation, and conformal c

An Immuno-Infrared Sensor Detects Preclinical Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease by Protein Misfolding.

The immuno-infrared sensor (iRS) detects misfolding of biomarker proteins in blood and provides thereby a very early and easily accessible diagnosis of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Only in early stages recently approved therapeutic Alzheimer's drugs work efficiently. In symptom-free stages, lifestyle change can largely delay the disease progression, and the drugs may even block the disease progression. Population screening by a simple blood test will therefore be a game changer in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases. This was made possible by the new iRS platform. In the iRS p

Electrophysiological Response of the Non-Anesthetized Primate Brain to Minimally Invasive Local Infrared Neural Stimulation in Chronic Experiments.

Infrared neural stimulation (INS) represents an invasive technique for modulating brain activity in animals, particularly primates, which serve as effective models for human brain research. Noninvasive approaches, such as transcranial laser stimulation, are safer but have lower spatial and temporal resolution, primarily altering metabolic processes rather than directly stimulating specific neurons. Invasive techniques provide better resolution by targeting neurons with focused laser beams but require intricate surgeries that damage the meninges, limiting studies to short-term experiments condu

Therapeutic Potential of Infrared and Related Light Therapies in Metabolic Diseases.

Infrared and related light therapies are gaining increasing interest due to their potential therapeutic properties in treating various health conditions, particularly metabolic diseases such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. These diseases often coexist with dyslipidemia, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular complications. This review paper analyzes the impact, primarily of far-infrared light therapy (FIR), on improving endothelial function, reducing oxidative stress, and modulating inflammatory responses-key factors in metabolic diseases. Preliminary studies

Photochemical behavior of colloidal lignin particles under controlled UV exposure: Balancing self-stabilization and degradation.

Colloidal Lignin Particles (CLPs), with their polyphenolic structure, are promising sustainable alternatives to chemical UV filters. This study investigates the photochemical behavior of CLPs under ultraviolet irradiation synthetized from five different technical raw lignins (Alkali, Organosolv, two Enzymatic Hydrolyzed and Softwood Kraft Lignin) via solvent-shift procedure. The suspensions were irradiated using a self-developed UV-pen set-up and a commercially available UV chamber, enabling controlled UV exposure over time. Variations in the physicochemical properties of irradiated colloidal

Emerging frontiers in long-wavelength light-triggered nitric oxide release for therapeutic applications.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a pivotal signaling molecule whose therapeutic potential is constrained by challenges in controlled delivery. Photocontrolled strategies employing red to near-infrared (NIR) light, known for deep tissue penetration and minimal phototoxicity, present transformative opportunities for spatiotemporally precise NO release. This review surveys emerging red/NIR-activated NO release platforms and elucidates core photochemical strategies, including direct red/NIR absorption by engineered NO donors, upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), two-photon excitation, and photoredox catalysis.

NIR-II Emissive, Ischemia Targeted Nanocomposites for Localized Therapeutic Hypothermia of Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

As the gold-standard neuroprotective intervention against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury, therapeutic hypothermia (TH) exhibits clinical efficacy while the current TH strategies are limited in application due to their non-specific cooling effect causing severe side effects. Developing targeted TH strategies still remains a problem. In this work, a near infrared emissive, ischemic targeted nanocomposite is demonstrated to achieve localized TH at the ischemic-reperfusion site. Rare earth doped nanoparticle as the core of the nanocomposite generates near infrared II luminescence for the gui

Efficient fabrication of chitin-based films with high UV-blocking and fluorescence via Hantzsch reaction.

As the second most abundant polysaccharide on earth, chitin-based films are promising packaging and biomedical materials. However, the lack of special function (especially UV-blocking properties and fluorescence) usually restricts their further and high-value applications. Herein, high UV-blocking and fluorescence chitin-based films were fabricated via surface modification using acetoacetation and the Hantzsch reaction. The structure and properties of the films were characterized by NMR, FTIR, fluorescence spectrum, and tensile tests. The results showed that the benzene ring and 1,4-dihydropyr
