BACKGROUND: The use of synthetic insecticides is one of the most common strategies for controlling disease vectors such as mosquitos. However, their overuse can result in serious risks to human health, to the environment, as well as to the selection of insecticidal resistant insect strains. The development of efficient and eco-friendly insect control is urgent, and essential oils have been presented as potential alternatives to synthetic insecticides. Moreover, nanoencapsulation techniques can enhance their efficiency by protecting from degradation and providing a controlled release rate.

Mosquito-borne diseases have an economic impact, including loss in commercial and labor outputs, particularly in countries with tropical and subtropical climates; however, no part of the world is free from vector-borne diseases. Mosquitoes are the carriers of severe and well-known illnesses such as malaria, arboviral encephalitis, dengue fever, chikungunya fever, West Nile virus, and yellow fever. These diseases produce significant morbidity and mortality in humans and livestock around the world. In view of the recently increased interest in developing plant origin insecticides as an alternati

The effectiveness of a cheap and easy method of household protection against Culex quinquefasciatus Say and other mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) was investigated in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Kerosene-burning lamps (korobois) were modified to heat and vaporize transfluthrin, a volatile pyrethroid insecticide. When transfluthrin was added to fuel of the lamp, protection against biting was poor unless a very high concentration of insecticide was used. A modified lamp (= vaporizing koroboi) was designed to overcome this problem by mixing the insecticide with vegetable oil and heating it to 120 deg

Insect locomotion exhibits remarkable adaptability and flexibility despite the limited scale of its nervous system. However, the underlying principles that govern leg coordination remain difficult to extract and model computationally. Understanding how insects achieve stable and adaptive locomotion has long provided important inspiration for the development of control strategies in bio-inspired robotics. Nevertheless, many existing approaches rely on predefined coordination rules, manually tuned parameters, or hand-crafted reward functions, which limit the flexibility and transferability of th

Chemical pesticides constitute a core cornerstone of modern agricultural pest control practices. Contemporary management paradigms remain narrowly focused on post-embryonic pest stages, creating critical knowledge gaps in ovicidal intervention strategies that are pivotal for effective source-specific pest population suppression. Locusta migratoria is one of the key pests that pose a serious threat to agricultural production. However, current control measures for this pest are mainly focused on the nymph or adult stages. As a widely deployed thiourea insecticide, diafenthiuron exhibits excellen

Vector-borne parasitic diseases (VBPDs) are diseases that have a major impact on the health and productivity of livestock. VBPDs, including trypanosomosis, theileriosis, and anaplasmosis, are caused by blood parasites and Rickettsiales infections that can be transmitted by biting insects. The control and elimination of VBPDs is difficult and challenging. This study contributed to better understanding the impact of hematophagous insects on carrying pathogens to livestock by investigating the detection of Trypanosoma evansi, Theileria spp. and Anaplasma spp. in hematophagous insects collected fr

Climate change and global movements of people and goods have accelerated the spread of invasive species, including insects that vector infectious diseases, which threaten the health of more than half of the world's population. Increasing research efforts to control these diseases include the study of vector - pathogen interactions, involving the handling of pathogen-infected vector insects under biosafety level (BSL) 2 and 3 conditions. Like microbiology BSL-3 laboratories, BSL-3 insectaries are usually subjected to fixed-term or emergency room decontamination using recognized methods such as

The control of dipteran pests is highly relevant to humans due to their involvement in the transmission of serious diseases including malaria, dengue fever, Chikungunya, yellow fever, zika, and filariasis; as well as their agronomic impact on numerous crops. Many bacteria are able to produce proteins that are active against insect species. These bacteria include Bacillus thuringiensis, the most widely-studied pesticidal bacterium, which synthesizes proteins that accumulate in crystals with insecticidal properties and which has been widely used in the biological control of insects from differen

BACKGROUND: Insect salivary proteins play critical roles in modulating plant defenses and facilitating feeding, yet the evolutionary origins and functional mechanisms of most salivary effectors remain poorly understood. This study investigates the evolution and function of multiple inositol polyphosphate phosphatases (MINPPs), the enzymes that specifically expanded in planthopper and bean bug.
RESULTS: Phylogenetic analysis revealed that MINPP genes have undergone lineage-specific multiplication in planthoppers, with up to six paralogs per species. Multiplicated MINPPs exhibited pronounced sa

The evolutionary success of insects is arguably due to their ability to build up a complex, highly-adaptable and very effective defense system against numerous pathogens, including entomopathogenic fungi. This system relies on the humoral immune system and cellular defense reactions. The first line of defense against biological pathogens is a cuticle formed of several layers. The cuticular lipids may contain hydrocarbons, free fatty acids (FFA), alcohols, waxes, glycerides, aldehydes and sterols. Cuticular fatty acids may also play a role in defending against fungal invasion. Our present findi

Predators and parasitoids may contribute to controlling the population sizes of phytophagous insects, and this has been shown to benefit plants. Phytophagous insects may also be killed by other herbivores (intraguild predation), usually larger-sized vertebrates that ingest insects accidentally while feeding on common food sources. We studied the intraguild predation on acorn weevils by ungulates and assessed the consequences for weevil populations. Infested acorns are prematurely abscised and the weevil larvae finish their development inside the acorns after being dropped. Our results show tha

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of indoor residual spraying (IRS) during the post elimination phase of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and when to stop its application is uncertain. This study investigated the relationship between VL occurrence and frequency of IRS on vector density, infection rates, and insecticide susceptibility.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Four villages in the Sarlahi district served as sentinel surveillance sites for sandfly density measurement and xeno-monitoring, selected based on VL endemicity levels of high, moderate, low and non-endemic (no reported cases in the past 1

The emergence of insecticide resistance in Triatoma infestans, driven by extensive pyrethroid use, represents a major obstacle to effective Chagas disease vector control in Argentina. Given the spread of resistance and the impact on control efforts, understanding its geographical and temporal patterns is crucial for guiding resilient and effective intervention efforts. This study presents a spatio-temporal analysis of deltamethrin resistance across nine Argentine provinces during 2013-2023 period, based on biotoxicological assays of T. infestans populations collected from 155 locations, comple

Gambiense human African trypanosomiasis (gHAT), a neglected tropical disease caused by a parasite transmitted by tsetse flies, once inflicted over 30,000 annual cases and resulted in an estimated half a million deaths in the late twentieth century. An international gHAT control program has reduced cases to under 1,000 annually, encouraging the World Health Organization to target the elimination of gHAT transmission by 2030. This requires adopting innovative disease control approaches in foci where transmission persists. Since the last decade, case detection and treatment, the mainstay of contr

Lachryphagous males of Phortica variegata (Fallén, 1823) are gaining increasing attention in Europe, as they act as vectors of the nematode Thelazia callipaeda Railliet & Henry, 1910, causal agent of thelaziosis, an emergent zoonotic disease. Currently, there are no effective control strategies against the vector, and surveillance and monitoring rely on time-consuming and nonselective sampling methods. Our aim was to improve the knowledge about the population dynamics and the chemical ecology of the species. A total of 5,726 P. variegata flies (96.4% males and 3.6% females, mostly gravid) were

Malaria vector control interventions in Sumba, Indonesia, have not been able to eliminate malaria. Human drivers of exposure to Anopheles bites were investigated as part of a larger clinical trial evaluating the impact of a spatial repellent product on malaria incidence. Human behavioral observations (HBOs) evaluating temporal and spatial presence, sleeping behaviors, and insecticide treated net (ITN) use, were collected parallel to entomological collections-indoor and outdoor human landing catches (HLCs), and house hold surveys. Data demonstrates that mosquito access to humans, enabled by str

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) has been an alarming global public health issue. The disease affects mainly poor and marginalized people in low-resource settings and is caused by two subspecies of haemoflagellate parasite, Trypanosoma brucei and transmitted by tsetse flies. Progress made in HAT control during the past decade has prompted increasing global dialogue on its elimination and eradication. The disease is targeted by the World Health Organization (WHO) for elimination as a public health problem by 2020 and to terminate its transmission globally by 2030, along-side other Neglected
