Association of harsh parenting and maltreatment with internet addiction, and the mediating role of bullying and social support.

Growing evidence has shown that exposure to harsh parenting and child maltreatment elevate the risk of Internet addiction in adolescence. Yet, limited research has examined the mechanisms underlying this association. The present study was a cross-sectional school survey of 1204 adolescents (52.2 % male and 47.8 % female; mean age, 13.36 years) in Hong Kong. The adolescents completed a self-reported questionnaire about their exposure to bullying victimization, bullying perpetration, child maltreatment, Internet addiction, and social support. The findings showed that harsh parenting and maltreat

Alexithymia, Dissociation, and Family Functioning in a Sample of Online Gamblers: A Moderated Mediation Study.

The diffusion of the internet and technological progress have made gambling on online platforms possible, also making it more anonymous, convenient, and available, increasing the risk of pathological outcomes for vulnerable individuals. Given this context, the present study explores the role of some protective and risk factors for problematic gambling in online gamblers by focusing on the interaction between alexithymia, dissociation, and family functioning. A sample of 193 online gamblers (Mage = 28.8 years, SD = 10.59; 17% females, 83% males) completed the South Oaks Gambling Screen, Twenty-

Possible End to an Endless Quest? Cognitive Bias Modification for Excessive Multiplayer Online Gamers.

Cognitive biases have previously been recognized as key mechanisms that contribute to the development, maintenance, and relapse of addictive behaviors. The same mechanisms have been recently found in problematic computer gaming. The present study aims to investigate whether excessive massively multiplayer online role-playing gamers (EG) demonstrate an approach bias toward game-related cues compared to neutral stimuli; to test whether these automatic action tendencies can be implicitly modified in a single session training; and to test whether this training affects game urges and game-seeking b

Deficits in behavioural inhibition in substance abuse and addiction: a meta-analysis.

AIMS: Deficits in behavioural inhibitory control are attracting increasing attention as a factor behind the development and maintenance of substance dependence. However, evidence for such a deficit is varied in the literature. Here, we synthesised published results to determine whether inhibitory ability is reliably impaired in substance users compared to controls. METHODS: The meta-analysis used fixed-effects models to integrate results from 97 studies that compared groups with heavy substance use or addiction-like behaviours with healthy control participants on two experimental paradigms co

Neurobiological correlates of internet gaming disorder: Similarities to pathological gambling.

The number of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) is on the rise worldwide along with the fascination that they inspire. Problems occur when the use of MMOs becomes excessive at the expense of other life domains. Although not yet formally included as disorder in common diagnostic systems, internet gaming disorder (IGD) is considered a "condition for further study" in section III of the DSM-5. The current review aims to provide an overview of cognitive and neurobiological data currently available on IGD, with a particular focus on impulsivity, compulsivity, and sensitivity to reward and p

Smartphone dependence, addiction, and insomnia among medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, smartphone use among students increased, even before going to sleep, which resulted in an increased risk of dependence, addiction, and sleep problems such as insomnia and daytime somnolence. The objective of this study was to determine the association between different levels of problematic smartphone use (dependence and addiction) and insomnia among medical students. In this study, "dependence" refers to subclinical, yet compulsive, smartphone use, while "addiction" denotes a more severe behavioral disruption involving loss of control and functional

The relationship between physical exercise and social media addiction among Chinese university students: a random intercept cross-lagged panel model analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the digital era, Social Media Addiction has emerged as a prominent issue affecting the mental health of university students. Despite evidence linking physical exercise to lower Social Media Addiction, it remains unknown whether within-person changes in physical exercise actually predict subsequent changes in Social Media Addiction, and whether psychological resilience accounts for this link. Prior work is constrained by cross-sectional designs, the absence of a unified model integrating these three constructs, and reliance on traditional cross-lagged panel models that cannot sep

The relationship between smartphone addiction and shyness among medical college students: The mediating effect of self-acceptance.

Smartphone addiction has become a widespread issue affecting the mental health of medical students. Shyness, a common personality trait, and self-acceptance have not been fully explored for their associative relationships with smartphone addiction among this population. This study aimed to explore the relationships among shyness, self-acceptance, and smartphone addiction, and to examine the mediating role of self-acceptance in these relationships. We adopted a cross-sectional survey, using the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version, Shyness Scale, and Self-Acceptance Questionnaire, to conduc

Association between problematic smartphone use, loneliness, and risk behaviors among high school students in a conflict-affected setting: A cross-sectional study from Palestine.

BACKGROUND: Students and young adults are known to use their mobile devices at significant rates, which may put them at risk for problematic use, especially in war-torn countries. However, there is limited research on problematic smartphone use in Palestine. This study aims to examine the relationship between sociodemographic variables, feelings of loneliness, smoking, consumption of energy drinks, alcohol use, and problematic smartphone use among 12th-grade students. METHODS: The study utilized a cross-sectional research design. We gathered data using a self-reported questionnaire that inclu

Mapping family affect to adolescent short-video addiction: A cross-lagged panel network analysis.

Short video platforms have rapidly become central to adolescents' digital lives, yet empirical work on short-video addiction (SVA) is largely cross-sectional and rarely embeds family dynamics within established theoretical frameworks. Most adolescent viewing occurs at home, making familial emotional environments potentially critical, yet understudied, drivers of SVA. To address this gap, the current study adopted a developmental cascade framework, using a cross-lagged panel network approach to examine temporal associations among family ecological risks (family economic strain, parental negativ

Digital engagement profiles and binge eating symptoms in adolescents: A person-centred, longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Binge eating symptoms emerge in early adolescence and are clinically meaningful below diagnostic thresholds. Digital media engagement may be relevant, yet most studies rely on aggregate screen time and rarely separate patterns of use from addiction-like features. This study tested whether screen use profiles and social media addiction risk were associated with binge eating symptom indicators in a large longitudinal cohort. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study at Time 3 (T3; n = 10,465; ages 10-13 years) and Time 5 (T5; n = 9257; age

How much gaming is too much? An analysis based on psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: While there are calls to restrict the time spent on gaming because it is seen as problematic and potentially leading to gaming disorder (GD), there is conflicting evidence about this issue. We explored the association between the average weekly time spent gaming and reported GD symptoms. Additionally, Latent Profile Analysis was employed to investigate how time spent gaming relates to variables representing psychological distress (PD), such as satisfaction with life, symptoms of depression, and perceived stress. METHODS: Data were collected using surveys with a large sample of hig

The Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale: its psychometric properties and invariance among women with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Facebook addiction is increasing, giving rise to limited real-life social networks, loneliness, poor work and academic performance, psychopathology, and low well-being. Facebook entails numerous factors that increase the risk for disordered eating attitudes and behaviors (e.g., use time and Facebook activities such as social grooming and photo sharing). This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS) among patients with eating disorders (EDs) given lack of validation of Facebook addiction measures in this population.
