The clinical presentation of amoebic colitis are diverse. Amoebiasis is comparatively rare in the U.K. and, unless the clinician is aware of the condition, wrong diagnosis often leads to delay in appropriate treatment resulting in high mortality. Diagnosis rests on clinical suspicion, stool examination, sigmoidoscopy with rectal biopsy and serological tests. Amoebiasis is readily treatable and death from it should be very rare.

There have been three major advances in the treatment of small bowel fistulas since 1960: irrigation with lactic acid; total or parenteral nutrition; and continuous low flow enteric nutrition. Under observation were 47 patients with colonic diverticula. The clinical classification of diverticulosis of the colon is suggested. The principal method of treatment in patients with uncomplicated forms of the diverticulosis should be conservative. In profuse hemorrhage and intestinal obstruction as well as in perforation of the diverticulum, that would not respond to conservative therapy, surgery is indicated.

End-to-end small intestinal anastomoses were performed in 20 dogs. In four dogs, the anastomosis was secured by distant single line stitches. These animals died of peritonitis. In the other animals the suture was covered with Surgicel and fixed by means of Histoacryl-N-Blau adhesive. In these cases, no insufficiency developed and in two cases were only adhesions and intestinal obstruction, respectively, observed. All the animals survived the operation. The method is recommended for securing intestinal anastomoses and stumps in patients.

Intestinal infarction was studied in 20 children with acute gastroenteritis. Eighteen cases (90%) died and 2 (10%) recovered. An analysis of 80 cases of malignant and benign tumors of the small intestine is presented, and major clinical features of various histologic lesions are discussed. Tumors of the small intestine are rare, and the small bowel may have intrinsic protective systems against the development of neoplasms.
