Investigations were undertaken on Taenia multiceps to determine if genetic variation was present within the parasites of Sardinia (Italy). Forty samples were obtained from various locations of Sardinia and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an infectious zoonotic disease, moving from Central Europe to other countries and still rare in Italy. The disease, produced by the European subtype virus, typically takes a biphasic course with neurological disorders of different severity during its second phase. An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with Dicrocoelium dendriticum excretory/secretory antigens was used to evaluate the presence of serum antibodies against the trematode in 738 sheep randomly chosen in Sardinia (Italy). Coprological sedimentation was used to discover egg-output. Seropositivity was detected in 86.2% tested sheep, whereas faecal prevalence was 6.7%; all that were faecal-positive also were ELISA-positive.

Protozoa are important enteric pathogens in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. In a sample from northern Italy of the second half of the 19th century hypoplasias in maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth was examined. The maxillary canine is the most frequently affected tooth. Frequencies of hypoplasias show slightly lower figures than other 19th century skeletal populations. The age interval most affected was between 2 and 4 years and suggests an association with stress at weaning and immediately thereafter.

We conducted an epidemiological survey of epilepsy among males born in 1967 who were called for selection for military service from the Lombardy region in northern Italy. Of 54,520 subjects, 258 had active epilepsy (prevalence, 0.47%). Idiopathic partial epilepsy was most common (29.1%), and generalized idiopathic and/or symptomatic epilepsy was least common (3.8%). The Oxford panel of monoclonal antibodies was used to subtype 83 strains of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 of human and environmental origin. The International panel was also used to subtype 50 of them. Four hundred and sixty-three new diagnoses of coeliac disease in children were made during 1973 to 1986 in our department. The distribution of new diagnoses per year did not show any decreasing trend in the period 1973 to 1986. No changing trend in breast feeding attitudes was found in the region during the same period. Seven erythrocyte polymorphisms, namely AcP, PGM1, PGM2, EsD, GLO I, G-6-PD and Hb, have been typed in 556 unrelated adult male subjects from Bari (South Italy) and its district.
