Cephalometric pattern of Jewish East European adolescents with clinically acceptable occlusion.

Knowledge of the normal dentofacial patterns of various ethnic groups is important for clinical and research purposes. The objective of this study was to describe the dentofacial pattern of one Jewish ethnic group and to compare it with accepted standards for other white populations. Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 18 children of Jewish East European origin with clinically acceptable permanent occlusion, ages 11 to 13 years, were used. A computer-aided cephalometric analysis was performed, and the mean values and standard deviations for the various cephalometric variables were obtained. W

The Cohen syndrome: report of five new cases and a review of the literature.

The Cohen syndrome is a genetic disorder consisting of mental retardation, obesity, hypotonia, and a characteristic craniofacial appearance. Since its original description, 13 patients have been reported. This presentation gives an account of 5 additional cases in 4 families and provides further evidence that this disorder is most probably transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait. This study also demonstrates the range of clinical features observed in this syndrome and suggests that the basic defect may be one of connective tissue.

A variant of prealbumin from amyloid fibrils in familial polyneuropathy of Jewish origin.

Amyloid fibrils were isolated from spleen and thyroid obtained at autopsy from one patient (S.K.O.) of Jewish origin with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy. Gel filtration on Sephadex G100 after solubilization in 5 M guanidine HCl yielded three major components with 14,000, 9,000, and 5,000 mol wt, respectively. The two larger components shared antigenic determinants with human prealbumin. Amino acid analysis and amino terminal sequence studies revealed the 14,000-mol wt protein to be an intact prealbumin subunit. The 9,000-mol wt fragment obtained in highest yield encompassed the region fro

Ultrastructure of the conjunctiva, skin, and gingiva: a case of Sandhoff's disease in a Jewish patient.

Pleomorphic membranous cytoplasmic bodies that indicated glycolipid storage were found in the conjunctiva, skin, and gingiva of a Jewish patient with Sandhoff's disease. The clinical symptoms were typical of GM2 gangliosidosis. Both hexosaminidase A and hexosaminidase B activities were deficient in the leukocytes and serum. Glycosaminoglycan levels in cultured fibroblasts were elevated. Membranous cytoplasmic bodies were observed in high concentrations in a large proportion of the vascular endothelial cells, pericytes, and Schwann cells and to a somewhat lesser extent in the fibrocytes of all

"Unveiling the 'Empty Pool/Pull'": Gambling Disorder's Impact on the Sense of Belonging to the Jewish Ultra-Orthodox Community.

Closed religious communities cultivate a robust communal identity, shared faith, values, and norms among their members, providing them with social and emotional support. Deviance carries significant consequences, specifically disintegrating members' sense of belonging. Gambling disorder (GD) is characterized by harmful gambling behaviors that negatively affect individuals' lives. While gambling is a prevalent recreational activity, within closed religious communities, addiction, including GD, is viewed as a violation of religious teachings, values, and communal norms. This study explores GD's

Jewish Ethics of Inmate Vaccines Against COVID-19.

PURPOSE: The COVID-19 pandemic broke out at the end of 2019, and throughout 2020 there were intensive international efforts to find a vaccine for the disease, which had already led to the deaths of some five million people. In December 2020, several pharmaceutical companies announced that they had succeeded in producing an effective vaccine, and after approval by the various regulatory bodies, countries started to vaccinate their citizens. With the start of the global campaign to vaccinate the world's population against COVID-19, debates over the prioritization of different sections of the pop

Female Sexual Pain and Depression in a Non-clinical Sample of Religious Israeli Jewish Women: Does Religion Make a Difference?

The association between female sexual pain (FSP) and various aspects of physical, psychological, and sexual well-being is well-documented in the research literature. Multiple studies have reported a link between FSP and depressive symptoms. This study aimed to examine the possible moderating effect of religiousness on the FSP-depression association among a non-clinical population. A sample of 163 adult Israeli Jewish women in heterosexual marriages, all identifying as religious, responded to an online questionnaire including measures of genito-pelvic pain, depression, and two aspects of religi

Prevalence and Characteristics of Cervical Ossified Posterior Longitudinal Ligament in the Jewish Population.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have demonstrated an association between ethnic identity and the prevalence rate of cervical ossified posterior longitudinal ligament (C-OPLL). To date, its prevalence rate in the Jewish population has not been determined. The aim of this historical prospective study is to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of C-OPLL in the Jewish population. METHODS: We performed a retrospective evaluation of imaging studies of all adult patients who underwent both cervical computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging for all clinical indications within a span of 3

Population-based BRCA1/2 testing programmes are highly acceptable in the Jewish community: results of the JeneScreen Study.

BACKGROUND: Ashkenazi Jewish (AJ) people have a higher incidence of BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants (PVs) than unselected populations. Three BRCA-Jewish founder mutations (B-JFMs) comprise >90% of BRCA1/2 PVs in AJ people. Personal/family cancer history-based testing misses ≥50% of people with B-JFM. METHODS: We compared two population-based B-JFM screening programmes in Australia-using (1) an online tool (Sydney) and (2) in-person group sessions (Melbourne). RESULTS: Of 2167 Jewish people tested (Sydney n=594; Melbourne n=1573), 1.3% (n=28) have a B-JFM, only 2 of whom had a significant cancer

March of the Living, a Holocaust Educational Tour: An Assessment of Anxiety and Depression.

March of the Living (MOTL) is a 2-week international educational tour for high school seniors to learn about the Holocaust by visiting concentration/deaths camps and other Jewish historical sites in Poland, culminating in a week-long excursion in Israel. Although the trip is primarily educational, there is recent research evidence to suggest that attendees may suffer from a variety of mental health sequelae. To determine symptoms of anxiety and depression, 196 Los Angeles delegation participants voluntarily completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, composed of a trait anxiety scale (i.e., S

The destiny of an unacknowledged trauma: the deferred retroactive effect of après-coup in the hidden Jewish children of wartime Belgium.

For almost 45 years, the experience of Jewish children who were hidden during World War II was considered to be of little importance, particularly with respect to what had taken place in the concentration camps. Their very history was ignored in the many accounts of the Holocaust. It was only at the end of the 1980s that their experience began to be thought of as potentially traumatic. In this paper, the authors report on their psychoanalytical research project concerning the psychological outcomes of those experiences that had remained concealed for such an extraordinarily long latency period

Lessons learned from a measles outbreak in Antwerp, Belgium 2007-2008.

A 2007 to 2008 measles outbreak in Antwerp, Belgium, identified the orthodox Jewish communities as a new risk group. This study analyzes vaccination data of 949 school children of 4 belief systems to assess the completeness and timeliness of their measles-mumps-rubella vaccination. Orthodox Jewish children show a 4-fold lower chance of complete vaccination, a delayed start, and increased temporal spacing of childhood vaccinations. Not only belief issues but difficulties to access the regular vaccination program also seem to be the main reason.

Fatal kernicterus in a girl deficient in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase: a paradigm of synergistic heterozygosity.

A 6-day-old female newborn, readmitted for extreme hyperbilirubinemia with bilirubin encephalopathy, died despite 2 double-volume exchange transfusions. On autopsy examination the basal ganglia and hippocampus were selectively stained deep yellow. The infant was heterozygous for both the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase Mediterranean mutation and for the (TA)(6)/(TA)(7) promoter polymorphism for the gene encoding the bilirubin conjugating enzyme uridine diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1*28, associated with Gilbert syndrome). No additional mutations of the UGT1A1 were detected. S

Role of Helicobacter pylori infection in complications from Meckel's diverticulum.

Our purpose was to evaluate the role of Helicobacter pylori in complications arising from Meckel's diverticulum in the Jewish and Arab populations of Jerusalem. Diverticular tissues were studied by hematoxylin-eosin, Giemsa, and two immunohistochemical stainings. Three groups of patients were identified: (1) 20 patients in whom Meckel's diverticulum was an incidental finding during laparotomy for other causes; (2) 7 patients with heterotopic gastric mucosa who underwent laparotomy because of bleeding from Meckel's diverticulum--3 were infected with Helicobacter pylori; and (3) 15 patients who
