[A hundred cases of multiple primary neoplasms in association with genitourinary cancer].

There were 970 patients who were diagnosed as having genitourinary cancer at Yamagata Prefectural Central Hospital between 1975 and 1990, and of whom 100 cases (10.3%) had multiple primary malignant neoplasms in addition to their genitourinary cancer. They were compared with 220 patients having single genitourinary cancer and 274 having benign prostatic hypertrophy without past histories of cancer. The genitourinary organs involved with cancers included the prostate (50 patients), urinary bladder (43 patients), ureter or renal pelvis (15 patients) and kidney (7 patients). In the prostate cance

Premalignant Lesions in the Kidney Transplant Candidate.

End-stage kidney disease patients who are referred for transplant undergo an extensive evaluation process to ensure their health prior to transplant due in part to the shortage of available organs. Although management and surveillance guidelines exist for malignancies identified in the transplant and waitlist populations, less is written about the management of premalignant lesions in this population. This review covers the less common premalignant lesions (intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, thymoma, and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor) that can be found i

[Renal metastasis of classic seminoma].

INTRODUCTION: Seminoma comprises approximately 50% of testicular germ cell tumors. Renal metastases are infrequent, and are usually recognized at necropsy. CLINICAL CASE: A 24 years-old man with history of left radical orchiectomy due to classical seminoma (stage I), and adjuvant radiotherapy, showed elevated levels of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin and lactate dehydrogenase in the eleven month follow-up. Computed tomography showed a 9 × 8 cm lobulated, heterogeneous tumor in the left kidney. The histopathological and immunohistochemical assay demonstrated a classical metastatic seminoma.

[Definition and classification of hyperuricemia].

Hyperuricemia (serum urate level >7 mg/dL) is caused by accelerated generation of uric acid and/or impaired excretion in the kidney. It is classified into three types (overproduction, underexcretion and mixed types). The typical cases with the type of uric acid overproduction are hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyl transferase deficiency due to HPRT gene abnormality, excessive consumption of purine-rich diet, and cytolysis induced by chemotherapy for blood neoplasm, those with the type of underexcretion are familial juvenile hyperuricemic nephropathy due to uromodulin gene abnormality and abru

Retroperitoneal ovarian venous hemangioma: A case report.

Retroperitoneal venous hemangioma is a rare vascular malformation. The present study reports a unique case of a 68-year-old female with a retroperitoneal ovarian venous hemangioma that was surgically resected. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a retroperitoneal mass anterior to the left kidney. Enhanced imaging revealed a close relationship between the mass and surrounding vessels, suggesting a retroperitoneal vascular neoplasm. Histopathological examination of the tissue after complete surgical resection confirmed the diagnosis of a retroperitoneal ovarian venous heman

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney in a 7-month-old infant: A rare case report with molecular confirmation of SMARCB1 deletion.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney (MRTK) is a rare, highly aggressive renal neoplasm predominantly affecting infants, carrying a poor prognosis. We report a 7-month-old female who presented with a 10-day history of painless gross hematuria. Abdominal imaging revealed a large heterogeneous left renal mass without vascular invasion or distant metastases. Left radical nephrectomy with regional lymphadenectomy achieved complete resection (COG Local Stage II, node-negative). Immunohistochemistry demonstrated complete loss of INI1 expression, and next-generation sequencing confirmed a pathogeni

Bone Scintigraphy and Laboratory Clues to Osteomalacia in a Middle-Aged Man With Hip Fractures.

A 43-year-old man with a 1-year history of bilateral hip pain, worsened by standing and walking, presented with a limping gait. x-rays showed diffuse osteoporosis (osteoblastic-lytic), and a bone scan revealed symmetric uptake in the costochondral junctions (rosary beads), femoral neck, proximal tibia, and feet, with no visualization of the kidneys, suggesting a metabolic disorder or neoplasm. Computed tomography revealed osteolytic lesions in multiple bones. Suspecting metabolic bone disease or metastasis, laboratory tests were conducted. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed bilateral femoral

Three neoplasms in a Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra): malignant melanoma, trichoblastoma and mammary gland adenoma.

An eighteen-year-old female Eurasian otter became emaciated and died. Necropsy examination revealed nose and thoracic cutaneous masses, abdominal subcutaneous mass, and multiple nodules in the liver and lungs. Malignant melanoma was found in the nose cutaneous mass and to have metastasized to the liver, lungs, kidneys, adrenal glands, mammary glands and left mandibular lymph node. The neoplastic cells were labeled for vimentin, melanoma, and S100. The cutaneous mass in the thoracic area consisted of spindle shaped neoplastic epithelial cells and was diagnosed as trichoblastoma. Mammary gland a

Primary renal angiosarcoma: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Primary renal angiosarcoma is an exceedingly rare and aggressive neoplasm. Although it may occur in youth, this tumour is frequently reported in the sixth and seventh decades of life. The clinical presentation is frequently varied. Pathogenesis remains largely unknown and it has overlapping features with other tumours of the kidney. Current treatment options include variable combinations of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Reports regarding the disease prognosis and natural history are limited. In this article, we chronicle the case of a patient with primary renal angiosarcoma presentin

Evolution of Renal Cysts to Anaplastic Sarcoma of Kidney in a Child With DICER1 Syndrome.

Anaplastic sarcoma of kidney (ASK) is a rare neoplasm recently associated with DICER1 mutations. We report a child with germline DICER1 mutation who developed ASK in preexisting septated renal cysts, which were likely cystic nephroma. From age 2.5 to 6 years, sonographic imaging illustrated changes in the size and number of renal cysts, followed at age 8.8 years by a mass, pathologically an ASK. Lung cysts resected in infancy were diagnosed retrospectively as pleuropulmonary blastoma. Both tumors had acquired somatic DICER1 mutations. Ultrasonographic evolution of renal cysts to ASK has not pr

Perirenal lymphangiomatosis.

Lymphangioma is a rare, benign mesenchymal neoplasm, which is characterized by numerous intercommunicating cystic spaces containing lymphatic fluid. It is considered a congenital disease resulting from the obstruction of regional lymph drainage during the developmental period. Lymphangioma may be focal/unilateral or diffuse/bilateral, and in the latter case, it is referred to as lymphangiomatosis. Here, we report a case of a 38-year-old man with perirenal lymphangiomatosis. The patient's chief complaint was left flank pain, and left pleural effusion was found on radiological examination. After

Medical treatment of hypercalcaemia.

Hypercalcaemia results from the failure of renal calcium excretion to compensate increased influx of calcium into the circulation from the intestine, the kidneys and the skeleton. Hypercalcaemia is a common metabolic abnormality of varying severity that can be adequately diagnosed and treated. Primary hyperparathyroidism and malignant neoplasms are responsible for >90% of all cases. The management of hypercalcaemia depends on the underlying cause and involves approaches aiming at reducing serum calcium concentrations and correcting associated metabolic disturbances. A number of pharmacological

Angiomyofibroblastoma and Potential Mimicking Soft Tissue Tumors That May Occasionally Present in the Retroperitoneum: An Approach to the Differential Diagnosis With Report of an Unusual Index Case Abutting the Kidney.

The retroperitoneal soft tissues, extending from the pelvic floor to the level of the diaphragm, are the source of a variety of mesenchymal neoplasms with overlapping features and distinct clinical behaviors, making their distinction of crucial importance. Herein, we report a rare retroperitoneal angiomyofibroblastoma (AMFB) that presented as a right abdominal mass in a 25-year-old woman and that clinically simulated a primary renal carcinoma. The patient underwent complete surgical resection showing a well-circumscribed tumor adjacent to but separate from the right kidney. It was comprised of

Erdheim-Chester disease.

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is characterized by the infiltration of tissues by foamy CD68+CD1a- histiocytes, with 1500 known cases since 1930. Mutations activating the MAPK pathway are found in more than 80% of patients with ECD, mainly the BRAFV600E activating mutation in 57% to 70% of cases, followed by MAP2K1 in close to 20%. The discovery of BRAF mutations and of other MAP kinase pathway alterations, as well as the co-occurrence of ECD with LCH in 15% of patients with ECD, led to the 2016 revision of the classification of histiocytoses in which LCH and ECD belong to the "L" group. Both c

Microsatellite instability in pulmonary adenocarcinomas: a comprehensive study of 480 cases.

A major molecular pathway of genetic instability in cancer is DNA mismatch repair deficiency, leading to accumulation of numerous mutations at repetitive DNA sequence stretches (microsatellites), known as high-level microsatellite instability (MSI-H). In colorectal cancer, MSI-H tumors show a clinical behavior different from microsatellite-stable (MSS) tumors. Data about the prevalence of MSI among non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are conflicting, and clinical relevance of MSI is largely unknown. We analyzed a series of 480 pulmonary adenocarcinomas (ADC) for MSI using a sensitive mononucleo

Cancer treatment and growth cone-associated protein in human olfactory bulb glomeruli.

BACKGROUND: Growth cone-associated protein (GAP43) is found in growing axons and we hypothesized that systemic treatment with antineoplastic agents should disrupt regeneration of olfactory receptor cells. Disruption of regeneration should be evidenced by decreased presence of growing axons in the olfactory bulb. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate GAP43 in human olfactory bulb in normal controls and in individuals receiving treatment for neoplasms. DESIGN: Immunocytochemical studies were performed on autopsied human olfactory bulbs to identify both GAP43 and olfactory marker protein immunoreactivity. The
