Multiligament injury of the knee usually occurs as a result of high-energy trauma causing tibiofemoral dislocation. These are rare but poten … ent injury. Multiligament repair with suture augmentation is a viable approach to the management of knee dislocation injuries. We propose that this could provide superior outcomes to traditional reconstruction techniques using autograft or synthetic reconstruction.

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1987eng
We reviewed the results of arthroscopic lateral release using electrosurgery in 39 patients (45 knees) with a history of recurrent patellar subluxation or dislocation. The average follow-up time was 28 months (range, 24-36). At follow-up, the patients had decreased swelling, instability, and pain. There was an improvement in flexion activities, sports participation, and overall functional ability. Only 20% of the knees had completely normal physical findings: 11.1% of the knees were rated as excellent; 64.4% were improved; and 24.5% were poor. Dislocators had more frequent poor results. The co

PURPOSE: Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by joint hypermobility and ligamentous laxity, leading to a high prevalence of patellar instability. While anatomical risk factors for patellar dislocation (PD) have been extensively studied in the general population, their specific role in hEDS remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate anatomical predictors of patellar dislocation in patients with hEDS by comparing individuals with and without PD.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 168 patients diagnosed with hEDS. Patients we

PURPOSE: Trochlear dysplasia is found in 3.2% (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2-6.7) of the general population and linked to patellar instability and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of radiographic trochlear dysplasia in patients with patellar fractures. Secondary outcome was to evaluate the prevalence of trochlear dysplasia in different type of patellar fracture.
METHODS: All consecutive 18-year-old or older patients treated in a level-1 trauma center for patellar fracture between 2003 and 2016 were retrospectively evaluated

Recurrent dislocation of the patella is more common in girls than in boys. Although several predisposing factors may exist, patellar dislocation is most commonly associated with familial ligamentous laxity. Many surgical repairs have been described to stabilize the patella. We have found the semitendinosus transfer to the patella to result in a predictable, stable patellofemoral joint without risk of injury to the proximal tibial physis. Between January 1990 and December 1997, 29 children have been treated at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario with a semitendinosus transfer for recurre

This report describes 11 patients with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS) and patellar dislocation. The age at diagnosis of patellar dislocation ranged from birth to 16 years. Ten patients had chronic dislocations and 8 of 11 had bilateral patellar dislocations. Eight patients required surgical stabilization of the patella; most achieved a good outcome with surgical repair. All families reported that the patellar dislocations impaired developmental skills which improved after surgery. Seven of the 11 patients were described as having other joint abnormalities including congenital dislocations and

We report a patient with nail patella syndrome associated with congenital permanent dislocation of the patella successfully operated on using a modified Stanisavljevic method. The patient, a 26-year-old woman, complained of inability to completely extend her right knee joint. She had occasionally experienced the "giving way" phenomenon since childhood, but she had not received any treatment since birth. Physical examination showed that all fingernails were deformed, with longitudinal striations, while the lunules were of an abnormal triangular shape or were missing. Both patellae were palpably

BACKGROUND: Patellar (knee cap) dislocation occurs when the patella disengages completely from the trochlear (femoral) groove. It affects up to 42/100,000 people, and is most prevalent in those aged 20 to 30 years old. It is uncertain whether surgical or non-surgical treatment is the best approach. This is important as recurrent dislocation occurs in up to 40% of people who experience a first time (primary) dislocation. This can reduce quality of life and as a result people have to modify their lifestyle. This review is needed to determine whether surgical or non-surgical treatment should be o

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical therapeutic results of allograft tendon for anatomical reconstruction of medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) in patellar dislocations.
METHODS: From September 2005 to June 2008, 20 patients with patellar dislocation underwent MPFL reconstructions. There were 4 males and 16 females, aged 13 to 31 years (19 years on average). Patellar dislocations occurred in 7 left and 13 right knees, including 6 cases of acute dislocation and 14 cases of recurrent dislocation. The disease course was 1 day to 2 years. The frequency of dislocation was 1-6 (4 on average).

PURPOSE: To alert the treating clinician to an uncommon knee meniscal condition that often masquerades as a more common patella condition.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of a series of cases was undertaken. A series of 12 knees in 11 patients were referred to an orthopaedic surgeon with a diagnosis of recurrent lateral patella dislocation. Three knees had undergone patella realignment surgery with continuance of symptoms. Eight patients had prior magnetic resonance images read as no meniscal pathology and no acute patella/patella retinacular injury. All patients presented for a consult w

PURPOSE: The femoral trochlea axial orientation has been shown to be a better predictor of patellar dislocation than the femoral anteversion angle. However, no study has investigated the importance of the femoral trochlea axial orientation in the surgical treatment of patellar dislocation. It is aimed to explore the pathological threshold of the femoral trochlea axial orientation and its guiding implications for surgical interventions in the study.
METHODS: Sixty-four patients with patellar dislocation and 64 controls were included for measurement of the femoral trochlea axial orientation. Th

CASE: Inferior dislocation of the hip is rare, and very few cases have been reported in the English-language literature. This case report describes a patient who presented with an acutely flexed hip, with the thigh almost parallel to the long axis of the trunk, the knee flexed with slight abduction of the hip, and the patella facing upward and slightly laterally. The dislocation was treated successfully with closed reduction. Follow-up after 6, 12, and 18 months revealed no postreduction complications.
CONCLUSION: Inferior dislocation of the hip is rare and can be treated successfully with cl

A retrospective study was made of 270 patients and 284 knees with acute patellar dislocation treated operatively. The mean follow up time was 4.1 years. Medical history revealed 21.1% of cases with previous dislocations and 15.6% of cases with family occurrence of patellar dislocation. The dislocation resulted from an athletic performance in 41.5% of cases. The sport events most often associated with patellar dislocation were soccer, gymnastics, and ice hockey. All cases were treated with reefing of medial capsule. Release of lateral patellar retinacula was performed in 243 cases. Two cases we

Recurrent Patellar Dislocation (RPD) is a common knee sports injury, mainly affecting pediatric and adolescent populations, posing a significant challenge in orthopedic clinical practice. Although a variety of treatments have been reported, and many of them have shown good initial results, there is a lack of long-term follow-up results. Each treatment method has its own unique characteristics and limitations, and there is no standardized and unified treatment plan. This article provides a comprehensive review of current treatments for RPD. We believe that regardless of the surgical method used

Out of 270 arthroscopies performed in the Sports Clinic in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt in 1987 and 1988, 317 (11.5%) were done because of hemarthrosis of the knee after an acute trauma. Besides ruptures of the anterior cruciate ligament and synovial ruptures, in 53 cases (16.4%) acute patellar dislocation was found. These were only the first dislocations. Most, i.e., 44 (83%) occurred in sports, such as soccer (18) and skiing (9), which were the most frequent sports involved. Thirty-three (62.2%) were young men with an average age of 21.5 years. A newborn girl with trisomy 9 mosaicism is reported. Clinical findings included major malformations: bilateral hip dislocation, dislocation of the left knee, extreme micrognathia, and microsomy. Up to date, 11 liveborn infants with trisomy 9 have been reported, which allows us to make a karyotype/phenotype correlation. Minimal clinical diagnostic criteria are defined, on the basis of which the presence of this syndrome can be suspected.
