Zataria multiflora essential oil reduces replication rate of avian influenza virus (H9N2 subtype) in challenged broiler chicks.

1. The effect of Zataria multiflora essential oil on replication rate of the H9N2 virus in target organs was determined by real-time PCR. One-day-old broiler chicks were randomly divided into six groups and were challenged with H9N2 influenza. Two groups received either 20 or 40 µl/kg body weight/day Zataria multiflora essential oils (ZM) seven days before the challenge while two other groups received the essential oil at the same dosage but after H9N2 challenge. One group received 4 mg/kg body weight/day of the anti-viral compound amantadine after challenge and the last group received no trea

Effect of Dracocephalum argunense on mast-cell-mediated hypersensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Stimulation of mast cells starts the process of degranulation resulting in release of mediators such as histamine and an array of inflammatory cytokines. In this report, we investigated the effect of an aqueous extract of Dracocephalum argunense Fisch. (Labiatae) (DAAE) on immediate-type hypersensitivity and studied its possible mechanisms of action, focusing on histamine release and proinflammatory cytokine expression in mast cells. METHODS: An in vivo model of systemic and local allergic reaction was investigated. Compound 48/80- or IgE-induced histamine release from mast cells

Preparation of enriched extracts from Mentha longifolia subsp. typhoides samples collected from different localities in terms of ursolic and oleanolic acids.

In this study, the phytochemical profile of Mentha longifolia subsp. typhoides, a member of the Lamiaceae family with recognized medicinal and economic value, was investigated. The primary objective was to determine the optimal extraction conditions for triterpenic compounds, particularly ursolic acid (UA) and oleanolic acid (OA), and to prepare enriched extracts. To this end, 17 plant samples collected from 14 different localities in Eastern Türkiye were extracted using solvents of varying polarity (petroleum ether, dichloromethane, dichloromethane: acetone 9:1, acetone, ethyl acetate, ethano…

Isolation and structure elucidation of the compounds from Teucrium hyrcanicum L. and the investigation of cytotoxicity, antioxidant activity, and protective effect on hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Teucrium hyrcanicum L. (family Lamiaceae) is widely distributed in the North and Northwest of Iran. It has been used in the form of tea, tonic, and tincture for the treatment of various diseases such as cough, rheumatism, and fever. METHODS: In this study, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of methanol extract and different fractions of T. hyrcanicum were measured. Furthermore, the potential ability of T. hyrcanicum to protect against H2O2-induced oxidative stress was tested on the NIH3T3 cell line. Then, the isolation and structure elu…

Mitigation of cisplatin-induced hepatotoxicity by Salvia officinalis: Attenuation of oxidative damage and inflammation in rats.

Salvia officinalis L., commonly known as sage and belonging to the Lamiaceae family, is a medicinal herb indigenous to the Mediterranean region. It is celebrated for its diverse pharmacological properties and traditional uses in folk medicine, particularly in addressing hepatotoxicity. Cisplatin (Cis), a potent chemotherapeutic agent widely employed in cancer treatment, is recognized for its efficacy but often accompanied by adverse effects, including hepatotoxicity. The aim of this study was to assess whether an ethanolic S. officinalis extract (ESOE) could provide protection against Cis-indu…

In vitro and in silico evaluation of the synergistic effect of Cytarabine and Zataria multiflora Boiss extract on pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells (NALM-6 cell line).

BACKGROUND: Although cytarabine remains a cornerstone chemotherapeutic agent for Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), its clinical efficacy is frequently compromised by systemic toxicity and resistance mechanisms, notably telomerase activation via hTERT upregulation. This study investigates the synergistic potential of Zataria multiflora extract (ZME) combined with cytarabine to induce apoptosis in pre-B ALL cells (NALM-6) and explores the underlying molecular mechanisms. METHODS: In vitro experiments were conducted using the NALM-6 cell line. Cell viability was assessed via Trypan blue exclus

Antileishmanial activity of essential oil and 6,7-dehydroroyleanone isolated from Tetradenia riparia.

Tetradenia riparia plant is used as a traditional medicine in Africa for the treatment of inflammatory and infectious diseases as like parasitic. Therapy for leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis specie often fails, and the conventional drugs are toxic, expensive, require a long period of treatment, and adverse effects are common. The alternative therapies using natural products are inexpensive and have few or any adverse reaction. These reasons are sufficient to investigate the new natural therapeutic for leishmaniasis. We evaluated the potential of the essential oil (Tr

Evaluation of anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of Premna integrifolia extracts and assay-guided isolation of a COX-2/5-LOX dual inhibitor.

Premna integrifolia (Agnimantha brihat) is a traditional medicinal plant with a prominent place in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani systems of medicine. In this study we have evaluated the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties of the Premna integrifolia root extracts employing cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) enzyme-based assays, lymphocyte proliferation assay, pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines measurement. Petroleum ether extract (PEE) of Premna integrifolia showed potent inhibition of COX-2 and 5-LOX with IC50 values of 6.15 μg/mL and 11.

In-vitro and in-vivo anti-Trichophyton activity of essential oils by vapour contact.

The minimum inhibitory doses (MIDs) of essential oils by vapour contact to inhibit the growth of Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum on agar medium were determined using airtight boxes. Among seven essential oils examined, cinnamon bark oil showed the least MID, followed by lemongrass, thyme and perilla oils. Lavender and tea tree oils showed moderate MID, and citron oil showed the highest MID, being 320 times higher than that of cinnamon bark oil. The MID values were less than the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values determined by agar dilution assay. Furthermore, the

Impact of extraction method on the chemical composition and antibacterial potential of Salvia fruticosa essential oil.

BACKGROUND: Salvia fruticosa (Lamiaceae) is traditionally used to treat gastrointestinal (GIT) issues, stomach and abdominal pain, and ulcers. In this work, we aimed to extract essential oils (EOs) from the aerial parts of S. fruticosa, a plant commonly found in Egypt, and to evaluate their antibacterial activity against GIT pathogens. METHODS: Fresh samples' essential oils (EOs) were extracted using hydrodistillation (HD) and headspace (HS) techniques, while dried samples' EOs were obtained via supercritical fluid (SF) extraction. GC/MS analysis was used to analyze the EOs. Their antibacteri…
