A First-Person Account of Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to share the lived experiences of an adult with developmental language disorder (DLD) and relate her experience to the evidence base and issues in clinical practice. METHOD: We co-wrote a first-person account grounded in the research literature. We organized the account into six main sections: (a) the early signs of DLD; (b) diagnosis; (c) treatment; (d) the impact of DLD on family relationships, social-emotional health, and academic performance; and (e) considerations for practicing speech-language pathologists. We close with (f) the first author's current p…

Understanding speech and language in tuberous sclerosis complex.

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), is a neurocutaneous disorder, associated with a high prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD; ∼50% of individuals). As TSC is a leading cause of syndromic ASD, understanding language development in this population would not only be important for individuals with TSC but may also have implications for those with other causes of syndromic and idiopathic ASD. In this mini review, we consider what is known about language development in this population and how speech and language in TSC are related to ASD. Although up to 70% of individuals with TSC report langu…

Adapting Curricula for Children With Language Comprehension Deficits.

PURPOSE: We will describe how a multisite research team adapted a language-focused curriculum to be used in a scale-up project. Specifically, we identified underlying principles to modify a Tier 1 whole-classroom language comprehension-focused curriculum to be used as a Tier 2 small-group curriculum with children identified as at risk for low language comprehension, including children with developmental language disorder (DLD). METHOD: We discuss how researchers used the following five guiding principles to adapt a curriculum for children at risk for low language comprehension, including chil…

Language Development in Preschool Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Boys.

BACKGROUND: the present study aims to assess language in preschool-aged Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) boys with normal cognitive quotients, and to establish whether language difficulties are related to attentional aspects or to the involvement of brain dystrophin isoforms. METHODS: 20 children aged between 48 and 72 months were assessed with language and attention assessments for preschool children. Nine had a mutation upstream of exon 44, five between 44 and 51, four between 51 and 63, and two after exon 63. A control group comprising 20 age-matched boys with a speech language disorder a…

Deafness and early language deprivation influence arithmetic performances.

It has been consistently reported that deaf individuals experience mathematical difficulties compared to their hearing peers. However, the idea that deafness and early language deprivation might differently affect verbal (i.e., multiplication) vs. visuospatial (i.e., subtraction) arithmetic performances is still under debate. In the present paper, three groups of 21 adults (i.e., deaf signers, hearing signers, and hearing controls) were therefore asked to perform, as fast and as accurately as possible, subtraction and multiplication operations. No significant group effect was found for accurac…

Striatum and language processing: Where do we stand?

More than a century ago, Broca (1861), Wernicke (1874) and Lichteim (1885) laid the foundations for the first anatomo-functional model of language, secondarily enriched by Geschwind (1967), leading to the Broca-Wernicke-Lichteim-Geschwind model. This model included the frontal, parietal, and temporal cortices as well as a subcortical structure, which could be the striatum, whose nature and role have remained unclear. Although the emergence of language deficits in patients with striatal injury has challenged the cortical language models developed over the past 30 years, the integration of the s…

Awareness of developmental language disorder amongst workplace managers.

BACKGROUND: Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is one of the most prevalent developmental disorders and affects expressive and receptive language with no clear cause (Bishop et al., 2017). Awareness of DLD is currently much lower than other (sometimes less prevalent) disorders such as Autism or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (Bishop, 2010). Despite this, it has now been established that the implications of DLD reach well into adulthood (Botting, 2020; Botting et al., 2016; Clegg et al., 2005; Johnson et al., 2010). Thus, DLD may affect not only school progress but also empl…

Foreign Language does not Affect Gambling-Related Judgments.

Previous work has demonstrated that peoples' gambling-related judgments (e.g., perceived likelihood of winning) are often biased by non-diagnostic unclaimed prize information (i.e., the number of prizes still available to be won) resulting in non-optimal scratch card preferences. Another line of research suggests that people make less biased decisions (e.g., are less affected by the framing of a gamble) when using a foreign language. In the current study, we investigated whether using a foreign language (as opposed to one's native language) reduced the biasing effects of unclaimed prize inform…

Sex Differences in Functional Brain Networks for Language.

Men and women process language differently, but how the brain functions to support this difference is poorly understood. A few studies reported sex influences on brain activation for language, whereas others failed to detect the difference at the functional level. Recent advances of brain network analysis have shown great promise in picking up brain connectivity differences between sexes, leading us to hypothesize that the functional connections among distinct brain regions for language may differ in males and females. To test this hypothesis, we scanned 58 participants' brain activities (28 m…

Predicting Dyslexia in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

Purpose In this study, we examine how well kindergarten letter identification and phonological awareness predict 2nd grade word reading and dyslexia in children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and their age- and grade-matched peers with typical language (TL). Method We employ (a) logistic regression to determine how letter identification and phonological awareness predict dyslexia, that is, dichotomous categorization of good or poor word reading, in children with DLD and TL and (b) quantile regression to determine how letter identification and phonological awareness are associated w…

Language characterization in 16p11.2 deletion and duplication syndromes.

Expressive language impairment is one of the most frequently associated clinical features of 16p11.2 copy number variations (CNV). However, our understanding of the language profiles of individuals with 16p11.2 CNVs is still limited. This study builds upon previous work in the Simons Variation in Individuals Project (VIP, now known as Simons Searchlight), to characterize language abilities in 16p11.2 deletion and duplication carriers using comprehensive assessments. Participants included 110 clinically ascertained children and family members (i.e., siblings and cousins) with 16p11.2 BP4-BP5 de…

Mathematical Abilities in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

Purpose This review article provides a scoping review of the literature on mathematical abilities in developmental language disorder (DLD). Children with DLD typically struggle with learning in school; however, the mechanism by which DLD impacts academic success is unclear. Mathematics involves demands in the multiple domains and therefore holds potential for examining the relationship between language and academic performance on tasks mediated by verbal and nonverbal demands. Method A scoping review was performed via computerized database searching to examine literature on mathematics and DLD…
