A 29-year-old man with a furuncle-like lesion brought in a maggot on the next day after his first visit to our clinic. He said it moved out from the eruption spontaneously. He had previously visited Parana and Sao Paulo in Brazil before he noticed the symptom. The maggot was confirmed to be a third instar larva of Dermatobia hominis. Japanese cases of cutaneous myiasis are reviewed.

A 48-year-old man was admitted because of ischialgia. The CT scanning revealed tumors in the right pelvic cavity and the gluteal muscle. The bodies of Sparganum proliferum and granulation tissues were revealed by the tumor biopsy. In this hospital course, the chest roentgenogram revealed patchy infiltrative shadows in both lungs and left pleural effusion while chest CT scanning revealed multiple nodular shadows. Eosinophils increased in the peripheral blood and transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) showed non-destructive vasculitis with eosinophilic infiltration. The pulmonary lesion was diagnosed

The authors report a case of larva currens following systemic steroid administration for acute contact eczema. The patient was found affected with subclinical strongyloidiasis. Strongyloides is not very common in Northern Italy; it is occasionally diagnosed from stool samples from patients complaining of persisting itching.

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSDs)-including scabies, pediculosis, cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis and cutaneous larva migrans-affect millions worldwide yet remain neglected within global health programmes. Control is hindered by delayed diagnosis, fragmented service delivery, weak surveillance and limited integration of human, animal and environmental interventions. This review operationalises a One Health approach for EPSDs by proposing a pragmatic, threshold-triggered control pathway supported by a minimal indicator set suitable for district-level implementation. Evidence publishe…

Seabather's eruption (SBE) is an acute dermatitis characterized clinically by erythematous papules located almost exclusively under a bathin … ude other diagnoses, such as swimmer's itch, folliculitis, acne/acneiform eruptions, and follicular larva migrans. No cases of SBE have been previously reported from patients swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. L. unguiculata may have reached the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean, however, it is also possible that SBE in our patients was caused by differ …

BACKGROUND: In the skin, eosinophils are found in a broad spectrum of diseases, including infectious diseases.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we … h eosinophil cationic protein were detected in infectious skin diseases such as ectoparasitosis and larva migrans. Further, we observed the extracellular DNA structures in allergic/reactive diseases (Wells syndrome, hypereosinophilic syndrome, positive reaction of atopy patch test, allergic contact dermatitis, drug hypersensitivity) and in autoimmune diseases ( …

The visceral larva migrans (VLM) is a syndrome observed in human infection with helminth larval eggs such as the Toxocara spp. that usually infects dogs and cats. Among the risk factors involved in the occurrence of VLM, particularly important is the size of these animal populations. Sorocaba is a city with a dog population twice as large as that recommended by the World Health Organization. This fact has led to a survey of the presence of Toxocara spp. eggs in public square soils of this city. Thirty squares were selected, fifteen located in the outskirts of the city and fifteen downtown. Soi…

BACKGROUND: In the last few years a considerable increase in imported diseases has occurred as a result of an increase in the numbers of tra … d fever (17), self-limited diarrhoea (16), amebiasis (8), giardiasis (6), scabies (7) and cutaneous larva migrans (5).
CONCLUSIONS: Health care activities included preventive issues, but mainly diagnosis and treatment of imported diseases. Among the attended individuals, there were not only travellers but also a significant proportion of immigrants and ONG col …

We report four cases of passage of subadult or adult Toxocara cati worms by young children ages 20 months to seven years. Worms were expelled rectally in two cases and in two cases they were vomited. A single worm was passed in two cases, three worms in one case, and 15 worms in the fourth case. All worms that were available for study were identified as T. cati by morphologic criteria, including the arrow-shaped cervical alae and the digitiform shape of the male tail. None of the four children exhibited clinical signs of ocular or visceral larva migrans, and in two cases where serum samples we…

Migratory behaviour of Ancylostoma braziliense was studied in relation to the structure of the skin in dogs after primary infections. Data were obtained studying serial sections of lateral skin areas 6 mm in diameter, which had been exposed to larvae. The sections were stained either with Harris' haematoxylin and eosin or with P.A.S. or as outlined by Crossmon. Most of the larvae managed to penetrate the skin within 1/2 hr after the application. Hairs did not seem to constitute sites of entry. The larvae moved into the horny layer where edges of keratinized cells provide uneven spots. They mig
