Ureteroscopic laser coagulation was performed in 20 patients. In 4 of these patients endoscopic treatment was judged to be incomplete and biopsy demonstrated a muscle invasive tumor in 3 and a poorly differentiated tumor in 1. Therefore, segmental resection or nephroureterectomy followed. In the other 16 patients laser treatment alone (8) or in conjunction with electroresection (8) eradicated the tumor successfully. Until now surgery was the only means of removing xanthelasmas. However, their proximity to blood vessels and consequent tendency to bleed makes visual supervision of the excision difficult. Laser-assisted tissue fusion has been investigated as a new technology to enhance the healing of soft tissues. Laser fusion of intestinal anastomoses shows promise as a method to obtain primary healing while eliminating a foreign-body reaction associated with the sutures. This paper reviews the experimental data that are available regarding laser-assisted intestinal anastomoses and summarizes our experience using the CO2, Nd:YAG, and argon lasers to form fusions in small bowel.

Multimodality therapy of 29 patients with Bekhterev's disease and Reiter's disease was performed. Of them 19 received external helium-neon laser therapy of the vertebral column and joints. A course of laser therapy consisted of 20-25 sessions. Therapeutic efficacy in this group of patients was assessed on the basis of clinicolaboratory indices and compared to the therapeutic results in the control group. A certain therapeutic effect of the use of laser therapy was obtained in patients with Bekhterev's disease and Reiter's disease proving the appropriateness and promise of further investigation

Data are reported from 323 otosclerotic ears in which primary surgery was carried out by using a large fenestra stapedectomy technique with fascial sealing of the window. In 129 ears the footplate was perforated with an argon laser. In the whole series, one ear became deaf (0.3%) as a result of granulomatous reaction in the operated area. The CO2 Laser is used in the treatment of several laryngeal diseases and offers considerable advantages over traditional techniques. New applications of this surgical tool are currently under study for other laryngeal and ENT pathologies. It should be pointed out that there are some limitations to the use of the CO2 Laser; an accurate examination of its indications is needed, as well as a precise knowledge of its techniques and possibilities.

Argon laser energy was applied to the trabecular meshwork of pigmented rabbits in an attempt to develop an animal model of 'glaucoma'. Laser energy was varied to determine the optimal level needed to produce sustained ocular hypertension. During a ten-year period, we treated 241 eyes by transscleral ruby laser cyclocoagulation. Each eye had a minimum follow-up of six months. The average was 24 months and the range was six to 92 months. Using a criterion for success of intraocular pressure between 5 and 22 mm Hg, we achieved an overall success rate of 62% (150 of 241 eyes). This success rate varied from 86% for aphakic open-angle glaucoma (32 of 37 eyes) to 53% for neovascular glaucoma (72 of 135 eyes).
