Physical and chemical strategies for therapeutic delivery by using polymeric nanoparticles.

A significant challenge that most therapeutic agents face is their inability to be delivered effectively. Nanotechnology offers a solution to allow for safe, high-dose, specific delivery of pharmaceuticals to the target tissue. Nanoparticles composed of biodegradable polymers can be designed and engineered with various layers of complexity to achieve drug targeting that was unimaginable years ago by offering multiple mechanisms to encapsulate and strategically deliver drugs, proteins, nucleic acids, or vaccines while improving their therapeutic index. Targeting of nanoparticles to diseased tis

A multifunctional mitochondria-targeted nanoparticle for the effective treatment of dry eye disease via reactive oxygen species scavenging.

Dry eye disease is a prevalent ocular surface disorder primarily driven by oxidative stress and inflammation, remains a therapeutic challenge due to the limitations of current treatments. In this study, we developed a multifunctional nanoparticle system, using a layer-by-layer self-assembly strategy to enhance the delivery and efficacy of a natural antioxidant, proanthocyanidin (PC). The nanocomplex consists of a caseinate-proanthocyanidin core, further modified with chitosan-triphenylphosphonium (CS-TPP) for mitochondrial targeting and coated with hyaluronic acid (HA) to prolong ocular surfac

Surface-Engineered ZnO Nanoparticles via Acetone Immersion for Charge-Balanced High Resolution Full-Color Organic Light Emitting Diode Displays.

In solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), carrier injection imbalance and interfacial quenching persist as major hurdles, primarily due to the hole-dominated transport in polymer-based emitters. Here, we introduce a simple but highly effective post-fabrication strategy for enhancing charge balance and device performance by chemically modifying ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) through acetone immersion. This treatment selectively passivates oxygen vacancy-related trap states at the ZnO NPs surface, resulting in improved electron injection and restored hole-blocking behavior, witho

MOF-Derived Binary Nanophases of Metal Oxides and Oxidized Carbon for Highly Selective and Long-Lived Gas Sensing.

Highly selective and durable chemiresistive gas sensing demands architectures that enable rapid analyte transport, strong interfacial reactivity, and stable charge transduction over prolonged operation. Here, we report a sensing layer derived from a Sn-based metal-organic framework (Sn-MOF), in which oxidative conversion transforms the Sn-MOF into a nanometer-scale binary nanophase of rutile SnO2 and oxidized carbon within an open, web-like, junction-rich mesoporous network. In this architecture, ultrafine SnO2 nanodomains are intimately integrated with a retained oxidized carbon binary nanoph

Hyaluronic acid-based bilayer microneedles integrating a polydopamine-indocyanine green nanoplatform and curcumin for near-infrared-activated antibacterial therapy.

Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) present a significant clinical challenge due to persistent bacterial colonization that exacerbates oxidative stress and impairs tissue repair. To address this, we developed a novel bilayer microneedle system (PI@Cur MN) combining polydopamine (PDA)-stabilized indocyanine green (ICG) at the tips with a Curcumin (Cur)-loaded backing layer, enabling synergistic photodynamic (PDT) and photothermal (PTT) antimicrobial therapy coupled with antioxidant functionality. The PDA-encapsulated ICG nanoparticles (PI) in microneedle tips demonstrated targeted near-infr

Atomic scale insights into the epitaxial growth mechanism of 2D Cr3Te4 on mica.

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials are of wide research interest owing to their promising applications in spintronic devices. Among them, chromium chalcogenide compounds are some of the limited available systems that present both high stability in air and high Curie temperatures. Epitaxial growth techniques based on chemical vapour deposition (CVD) have been demonstrated to be a robust method for growing 2D non-layered chromium chalcogenides. However, the growth mechanism is not well-understood. Here, we demonstrate the epitaxial growth of Cr3Te4 nanoplates with high quality on mica. Atom

Silica Coating of Ferromagnetic Iron Oxide Magnetic Nanoparticles Significantly Enhances Their Hyperthermia Performances for Efficiently Inducing Cancer Cells Death In Vitro.

Increasing the biocompatibility, cellular uptake, and magnetic heating performance of ferromagnetic iron-oxide magnetic nanoparticles (F-MNPs) is clearly required to efficiently induce apoptosis of cancer cells by magnetic hyperthermia (MH). Thus, F-MNPs were coated with silica layers of different thicknesses via a reverse microemulsion method, and their morphological, structural, and magnetic properties were evaluated by multiple techniques. The presence of a SiO2 layer significantly increased the colloidal stability of F-MNPs, which also enhanced their heating performance in water with almos

Cauliflower-like SnO2 hollow microspheres as anode and carbon fiber as cathode for high performance quantum dot and dye-sensitized solar cells.

Cauliflower-like tin oxide (SnO2) hollow microspheres (HMS) sensitized with multilayer quantum dots (QDs) as photoanode and alternative stable, low-cost counter electrode are employed for the first time in QD-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs). Cauliflower-like SnO2 hollow spheres mainly consist of 50 nm-sized agglomerated nanoparticles; they possess a high internal surface area and light scattering in between the microspheres and shell layers. This makes them promising photoanode material for both QDSCs and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR)

Langmuir adsorption study of the interaction of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots with model substrates: influence of substrate surface chemistry and pH.

We investigate the utility of Langmuir adsorption measurements for characterizing nanoparticle-substrate interactions. Spherical CdSe/ZnS core-shell nanoparticles were chosen as representative particles because of their widespread use in biological labeling measurements and their relatively monodisperse dimensions. In particular, the quantum dots were functionalized with 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid, and we utilized an amine-terminated self-assembled monolayer (SAM) as a model substrate. SAMs with different end-groups (-CH(3) and -COOH) were also considered to contrast with the adsorption behavi

Microstructure Evaluation and Mechanical Properties of PMMA/Al2O3 Nanocomposite Fabricated via Friction Stir Processing.

This study aimed to develop polymer matrix nanocomposites reinforced with Al2O3 nanoparticles to enhance the mechanical properties of PMMA. The composite was fabricated via friction stir processing (FSP) to ensure the homogenous dispersion of Al2O3 nanoparticles in the polymer. A grid of 5 holes in a 7 × 7 mm2 area was made in which the hole diameter was varied from 1.77 mm to 2.28 mm to obtain different volume fractions of reinforcement ranging from 15% to 25%. The holes were made with a depth of 3 mm in a 4 mm-thick PMMA sheets. After packing the Al2O3 powder in the holes, a 2 mm-thick PMMA

Shellac-coated iron oxide nanoparticles for removal of cadmium(II) ions from aqueous solution.

This study describes a new effective adsorbent for cadmium removal from aqueous solution synthesized by coating a shellac layer, a natural biodegradable and renewable resin with abundant hydroxyl and carboxylic groups, on the surface of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) imaging showed shellac-coated magnetic nanoparticle (SCMN) adsorbents had a core-shell structure with a core of 20 nm and shell of 5 nm. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic analysis suggested the occurrence of reaction between carboxyl groups on the SCMN adsorbent surface and cadmium

Hydrothermal synthesis of α-Fe(2)O(3)@SnO(2) core-shell nanotubes for highly selective enrichment of phosphopeptides for mass spectrometry analysis.

In this work, we synthesized α-Fe(2)O(3)@SnO(2) core-shell structure nanotubes by a facile two-step hydrothermal method for selective enrichment of phosphopeptides. The core-shell structure nanotubes were found to have outer diameters of 90-110 nm, thicknesses of 30 nm, and lengths of 260-280 nm. SnO(2) nanoparticles with an average crystallite size of around 5 nm form a layer of about 10 nm on both walls of the α-Fe(2)O(3) nanotubes. To demonstrate their ability for selective enrichment of phosphopeptides, we applied α-Fe(2)O(3)@SnO(2) nanotubes to the isolation and enrichment of the phosphop

Silica encapsulated CdS tabular nanocomposites via a template directed agglomeration mechanism.

Silica coated CdS tabular nanocomposites were synthesized through precipitation of CdS nanoparticles in octylamine/water bilayer system followed by in situ hydrolysis of tetraethoxylsilicate (TEOS) precursor. Face diameter of the nanoplatelets was in the range of 50-250 nm with a variable thickness (3 to 25 nm) dictated by octylamine content or R ratio ([water]/[octylamine]). A uniform SiO2 outer shell of about 15 nm was observed regardless of the size of the high aspect ratio CdS nanoplatelets, which appeared to be agglomerated primarily owing to the confined bilayer template. Morphology and

Modulation of ionic current signatures and transport dynamics of proteins in quartz nanopipettes via gold nanoparticle-assisted antigen binding.

Solid-state nanopore sensing provides a powerful platform for probing single-molecule translocation through the analysis of ionic current fluctuations; however, for protein analytes, rapid translocation and structural complexity often result in limited signal resolution. In this work, we systematically investigate the translocation behavior of proteins and nanoparticles in quartz nanopipettes under low ionic strength conditions, with a focus on the modulation of ionic current signatures by applied voltage and molecular structure. Chicken immunoglobulin exhibits both resistive and conductive ev

Analytical study of biosynthesised silver nanoparticles against multi-drug resistant biofilm-forming pathogens.

The emergence of the huge number of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria requires an alternative to the drugs. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are a strong candidate for this due to their bactericidal properties, which can be better concluded by understanding their morphology and chemistry. The study hypothesised that AgNPs synthesised using leaves of Syzygium cumini can be used to treat locally emerging MDRs forming biofilms on indwelling medical devices. Synthesised particles were characterised by methods like UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, trans

Reusable and non-invasive TiO2-based photodynamic transdermal patch (RPT) for treating MDR-negative bacteria strain and promote wound healing through a synergistic approach of ROS-induced RNS.

Wound healing is delayed due to the infection and biofilm formation of antibiotic-resistant species of gram-negative bacteria especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Antibacterial photodynamic therapy provides an efficient therapeutic strategy for overcoming drug resistance by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Here, we have designed a low-cost light emitting diode (LED) based reusable and non-invasive titanium dioxide nanoparticles patch which is sandwiched between the thin polymer layers. The light-induced pore formation in the polyme

Surface Selenium Coating Promotes Selective Methanol-to-Formate Electrooxidation on Ni3Se4 Nanoparticles.

In the quest to replace fossil fuels and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, developing energy technologies based on clean catalytic processes is fundamental. However, the cost-effectiveness of these technologies strongly relies on the availability of efficient catalysts made of abundant elements. Herein, this study presents a one-step hydrothermal method to obtain a series of Ni3Se4 nanoparticles with a layer of amorphous selenium on their surface. When employed as electrocatalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), the optimized proper surface Se-coated Ni3Se4 nanoparticles exhibit a hi

Reinforcing decellularized small intestine submucosa with cellulose acetate nanofibrous and silver nanoparticles as a scaffold for wound healing applications.

BACKGROUND: The formation of chronic wounds accounts for considerable costs in health care systems. Despite the several benefits of decellularized small intestinal submucosa (SIS) as an appropriate scaffold for different tissue regeneration, it has shortcomings such as lack of antibacterial features and inappropriate mechanical properties for skin tissue regeneration. We aimed to examine the efficacy and safety of decellularized SIS scaffold enhanced with cellulose acetate (CA) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) for healing full-thickness wounds. METHODS AND RESULTS: The scaffolds were prepa

Antibacterial Properties of a Honeycomb-like Pattern with Cellulose Acetate and Silver Nanoparticles.

This study involved the preparation and characterization of structures with a honeycomb-like pattern (HCP) formed using the phase separation method using a solution mixture of chloroform and methanol together with cellulose acetate. Fluorinated ethylene propylene modified by plasma treatment was used as a suitable substrate for the formation of the HCP structures. Further, we modified the HCP structures using silver sputtering (discontinuous Ag nanoparticles) or by adding Ag nanoparticles in PEG into the cellulose acetate solution. The material morphology was then determined using atomic force
