This study examined the relationship between substance use, trauma history, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and psychiatric comorbidity in a treatment seeking sample of cocaine dependent individuals (N = 91). Structured clinical interviews revealed that 42.9% of the sample met DSM-III-R criteria for lifetime PTSD. General strain theory (Agnew 1992) departs from traditional strain theories by emphasizing the role of the individual's affective responses to negative life experiences in fostering deviant behavior. This study aimed to determine the rates of occurrence of certain life events during the year before onset of disordered eating in women with bulimia nervosa, and to compare them with the rates among age-matched normal controls.

Case histories and clinical studies have pointed to the harmful effect on their children when traumatized parents do not communicate their traumatic experiences. The present paper argues that it is not the lack of communication in itself that is harmful. Lack of communication should rather be regarded as a coping mechanism which could indicate intrapersonal and interpersonal problems within the family.

Calls about suicide to a teen peer listening phone service over a period of 5 1/2 years are described. The majority of those calling about suicide were females. The phone contacts were of longer duration and later in the evening than calls about other concerns. Those concerned with suicide also discussed other serious issues such as self-esteem, family problems, substance use, and abuse and were less likely to be calling "just to talk."

The relationship between micturition, stressful events, and psychological symptoms was studied in 58 female patients with functional micturition disorders (urethral syndrome) and 21 control patients. All received three questionnaires (Symptom Questionnaire, Illness Behavior Questionnaire, and the Biographic Questionnaire). Analysis highlighted the appearance of the urethral syndrome in highly stressful situations and the increase in the patient's anxiety, depression, dysphoria, hostility, and irritability. A tendency to complain of other psychophysiologic symptoms was also noted.
