LIFT procedure: postoperative outcomes, risk factors for fistula recurrence and continence impairment.

Ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract has been recently employed as definitive treatment of anal fistulas. However, it carries a potential risk of continence impairment, fistula recurrence, and repeated operations. This study aimed to assess postoperative outcomes related to this procedure and evaluate the potential influence of preoperative and intraoperative features. Patients who underwent LIFT procedure between June 2012 and September 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided according to whether they developed fistula recurrence and on the history of a surgery pri

Introducing BPaL: Experiences from countries supported under the LIFT-TB project.

BACKGROUND: Previously, drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) patients were treated with long, toxic, and relatively ineffective regimens. However, in recent years, there have been major improvements made. The 2020 World Health Organization DR-TB Treatment guidelines recommended the use of a 6-months all-oral BPaL (bedaquiline, pretomanid and linezolid) regimen under operational research (OR) conditions for selected DR-TB patients. METHODS: The processes, challenges, and interim results of introducing BPaL under OR conditions in 7 countries supported under the Korea International Cooperation Ag

A Rare Symptom of Secondary Infection After Facial Thread Lift and Its Treatment.

Facial esthetics is concerned with the harmonious beauty of the face. The skin, soft tissues, and bone tissues of the face degenerate as people age. Facial thread lift is a new minimally invasive esthetic technique that uses threads embedded within different tissue layers to reposition and support lax tissues. The authors report a 35-year-old female patient who developed an infection after undergoing facial thread lift, presenting with facial flushing and swelling, fever, and poor sleep, which was tested for Nocardiopsis dassonvillei infection. The patient was later cured by thread removal, lo

AVF of superficial temporal vessels after thread brow lift, report of a case.

This report presents iatrogenic arteriovenous fistula of superficial temporal vessels after thread brow lift, which emphasizes on consideration of such rare complications during the procedure. A young woman presented with pulsatile mass of scalp after tread brow lift. Color Doppler and duplex sonography of the mass revealed an AVF (arteriovenous fistula) of superficial temporal vessels, a complication that in a few articles has been mentioned. Patient had received conservative treatment and the mass became very small and about to be disappeared. physicians must be aware of possible vascular in

A Case of Dysphagia and Dysarthria Improved by Flexible-palatal Lift/augmentation Combination Prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Palatal augmentation prosthesis (PAP) and palatal lift prosthesis (PLP) have been used to improve dysphagia and dysarthria. However, to date, there are few reports on their combined use. We report a quantitative evaluation of the effectiveness of a flexible-palatal lift/augmentation combination prosthesis (fPL/ACP) based on videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) and speech intelligibility testing. CASE: An 83-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a hip fracture. She developed aspiration pneumonia at 1 month after partial hip replacement. Oral motor function tests rev

Increasing experience with the LIFT procedure in Crohn's disease patients with complex anal fistula.

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of anal fistulas in Crohn's disease (CD) is associated with high failure rates, and treatment options are limited due to ongoing proctitis, multiple tracts, and concern for incontinence and non-healing wounds. The aim of this study was to investigate the healing rate of ligation of the inters-sphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) for anal fistulas in Crohn's disease and identify prognostic factors for healing. METHODS: This prospective analysis compared long-term healing rates of CD patients undergoing LIFT for anal fistulas. Consecutive patients with CD who underwe

Subcutaneous Face and Neck lift: A Traditional Method With Definite Effects Among Asians.

BACKGROUND: The mainstream facelifts in Western countries always involve the superficial fascia/superficial musculoaponeurotic system treatment. Meanwhile, subcutaneous face and neck lifts are widely applied among Asians. OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to evaluate outcomes of subcutaneous face and neck lift, including patient-reported and 3-dimensional (3D) measurement outcomes, and report on details of surgical procedures. METHODS: Patients who received a subcutaneous face and neck lift from January 2017 to June 2019 were asked to complete FACE-Q scales, and facial information was collected

Advantages of Porcine Xenograft over Autograft in Sinus Lift: A Randomised Clinical Trial.

This study aimed to compare the performance of intra-oral autologous bone grafts versus porcine xenografts in a two-step lateral window sinus lift. This split-mouth randomised controlled trial sequentially enrolled 12 patients with a 6-month follow-up. For each patient, a simultaneous randomised bilateral maxillary sinus lift was performed and filled with autologous bone from the mandible (control) or a porcine xenograft (test). A bone biopsy sample was collected during the implant placement for histological and histomorphometric analysis. CT scans were performed at the beginning and at the en

Direct Brow Lift and Skin Contraction in Facial Nerve Palsy: A Switch Technique.

The authors present a case series of 4 patients with facial nerve palsy who underwent a direct brow lift to correct brow ptosis, using the excised brow skin as a full-thickness skin graft to correct lower eyelid skin contracture, ectropion, and retraction. Functional outcomes were measured using the validated cornea, static asymmetry, dynamic function, synkinesis (CADS) grading system and by photographic assessment of lower eyelid height via margin reflex distance. Aesthetic outcomes were measured using a published grading scale specific to eyelid skin grafts.

Revisiting the Direct Brow Lift in Patients With Facial Palsy: 4 Key Modifications.

PURPOSE: The direct brow lift is a simple and popular technique, particularly in patients with brow ptosis secondary to facial palsy. It provides a high degree of control in determining the degree of brow elevation and shape achieved. However, it is arguably the least debated in terms of addressing some of its sequelae, namely the risks of a visible or indrawn scar and forehead paraesthesia. In this article, we report outcomes using four alternative principles to those outlined in current published literature. METHODS: All patients undergoing a primary direct brow lift for brow ptosis seconda

Effect of amount of biomaterial used for maxillary sinus lift on volume maintenance of grafts.

BACKGROUND: Regardless of the kind of biomaterial used for the graft, it is clear that, over time, the graft undergoes dimensional changes that could influence the final bone volume obtained, which could alter the stability of the installed implants. The aim of the present study was to compared and correlated the graft behavior with the amount (in grams) of xenogeneic and alloplastic biomaterials used in grafts for maxillary sinus lift. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used 148 CBCT images of 74 grafts from 68 maxillary sinuses lift patients in a university, post-graduate

Adsorption of hexavalent chromium by crosslinked chitosan-iron(III) in an air-lift reactor.

Column experiments were conducted in an airlift reactor containing a certain amount of crosslinked chitosan-iron(III) (Ch-Fe), to examine the effects of adsorbent mass, flow rate, and influent concentrations on Cr(VI) removal. The breakthrough time increased with an increase in Ch-Fe mass, but decreased with an increase in initial Cr(VI) concentration. The exhaustion time decreased with an increase in initial Cr(VI) concentration. The capacity at the breakthrough point increased with an increase in Ch-Fe mass, flow rate, and initial Cr(VI) concentration. The capacity at the exhaustion point in

Angulated implants: an alternative to bone augmentation and sinus lift procedure: systematic review.

Rehabilitation of completely edentulous patients with implant becomes challenging due to reduced amount of bone available and pneumatisation of maxillary sinus or both. To successfully treat such patients, prior to implant placement, patient has to undergo invasive procedures like sinus lift and/or bone augmentation which is not possible many time due to many reasons. This article focuses on an alternative treatment procedure in which two posterior implants are placed at an angle and two anterior implants are placed axially thereby eliminating the need for sinus lift or bone augmentation proce
