Upper lip prosthesis retained to a palatal obturator.

In cases of total or partial maxillectomies, the prosthetic rehabilitation is an effective alternative to minimize the sequelae left by surgical resection. The present study reports a clinical case of a 52-year-old patient who underwent partial maxillectomy, with upper lip involvement. The oronasal communication, resultant from surgical resection, did not allow the patient to return to her normal social life. Besides, the upper lip partial resection damaged her face's aesthetics. The proposed treatment was the confection of an upper lip prosthesis retained by a palatal obturator. The prosthesi…

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the upper lip.

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a rare salivary gland malignancy most often reported within the parotid gland. Of the salivary gland tumours that occur within the minor salivary glands at least 50% are reported to be malignant. This proves to be inaccurate when describing salivary gland tumours within the upper lip which are usually benign. A Medline search of the English language literature yields only one case report of a CXPA located within the upper lip. The authors present a second case report of CXPA within the upper lip and a review of its pathologic features and management.

Diced cartilage rhinoplasty technique for cleft lip patients.

BACKGROUND: Late warping of dorsal cartilage onlay grafts is a problematic complication of current secondary rhinoplasty techniques in cleft lip patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From May 2005 to December 2008, a total of 282 cleft patients had a secondary rhinoplasty performed at our center with a modified diced cartilage technique. Finely diced cartilage was injected over a cartilage framework, and no "sleeve" was used. Of those patients, 246 with a follow-up of more than 6 months were included in this retrospective study. RESULTS: The infection rate was 7.7%. In addition, 5.7% of patients c…

Effect of lip bumpers on mandibular arch dimensions.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this systematic review was to examine the effects of lip bumper therapy on mandibular arch dimensions. METHODS: A literature survey of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (www.cochrane.org) was conducted from December 1968 to January 2007. Human studies, randomized clinical trials, prospective and retrospective studies, and studies discussing the effect of lip bumpers on the arch and teeth were included. Two reviewers independently selected and extracted the data. RESULTS: Of the 52 studies found in the search, only 1 met the…

Nasal tip complications of primary cleft lip nasoplasty.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Complications of primary nasoplasty, at the time of definitive primary cheiloplasty, are underreported in the literature. This study endeavors to examine the occurrences of these complications at our cleft-craniofacial center, in an effort to identify causative factors and management strategies. A case series of patients with postoperative nasal complications after primary cleft lip nasal surgery is presented. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of primary cleft lip nasal repairs was conducted at our cleft-craniofacial center between January 2003 and December 2007. C…

Amelia, cleft lip, and holoprosencephaly: a distinct entity.

We report on a male fetus with amelia, cleft lip, and holoprosencephaly. We compare the clinical findings in our patient with those of previously reported cases with the most clinical overlap. To date only four cases with bilateral limb amelia, CNS anomalies, and facial clefts have been described. Our report appears to represent the fifth case with such a combination of anomalies.

Microform cleft lip repair with intraoral muscle interdigitation.

BACKGROUND: With a microform (forme fruste) cleft lip, obtaining an optimal functional and esthetic result is a challenge to a reconstructive surgeon. We describe modifications to existing techniques by Mulliken, Furlow, and Cutting that provides an optimal functional result with correction of the cleft furrow, vermillion notch, and cleft nose deformity. METHODS: Sequential unilateral microform cleft lip patients underwent our microform cleft lip repair modified from the following 3 techniques: the Mulliken microform cleft lip repair with no cutaneous scar, the Furlow complete cleft lip repai…

Reconstruction of bilateral cleft lip and nose deformity.

Bilateral cleft lip and nose deformity can be divided into several types according to the extent of the cleft, protruding premaxilla, size of prolabium and nose deformity. Many repair techniques introduced in the literatures were not perfect because of the change of facial profile under the influence of facial growth. The author uses 1-stage cheiloplasty with nose correction for bilateral cleft lip and nose deformity. Early lip adhesion is used before definitive corrections in wide-cleft patients. The lateral mucosal flaps are used for the lining of alveolar cleft. The lateral orbicularis oris …

Burkitt's lymphoma: an unusual cause of lip numbness.

A 38-year-old man was referred by his dental surgeon with a painful swelling in the right mandibular sulcus and an ipsilateral numb lip. Dental infection secondary to caries was initially diagnosed but biopsy revealed this to be a Burkitt's lymphoma. After intense chemotherapy, the patient is still in remission three years later. This case is a reminder that malignancy should always be high on a clinician's list of differential diagnoses of jaw swelling associated with neurological abnormalities and prompt referral is essential.

Thiersch grafting in recurrent herpes-induced lip depigmentation.

Recurrent herpes induced lip-depigmentation is an uncommon condition observed rarely in patients suffering from recurrent herpes labialis. Patients usually belong the age group between 20 and 40 who have had herpes labialis for 4--12 years. These patients do not respond to available methods of treatment such as psoralens and phototherapy because there is reactivation of the virus. Ten cases of recurrent herpes-induced lip depigmentation (HILD) were successfully treated with a combination therapy of acyclovir 400 mg twice a day for one year with Thiersch grafting six months after starting thera…

Canalicular adenoma of the upper lip mimicking mucocele.

Salivary gland neoplasms are relatively rare. Among the salivary gland neoplasms minor salivary gland neoplasms are often deceptive to the clinician and challenging to the pathologist because of their varied morphology and diverse histopathological pattern. This article documents a case of canalicular adenoma of the upper lip mimicking mucocele and discusses the differential diagnosis of minor salivary gland neoplasms.

Gingival recessions caused by lip piercing: case report.

Fear of losing the teeth is common among patients presenting with gingival recession. This report describes a case in which unusual gingival recessions were caused by lip piercing. Periodontal treatment involved removal of the causative agent, hygiene instruction, scaling and root planing, and coverage of the root with a subepithelial connective tissue graft. The therapeutic measures applied in this case yielded satisfactory root coverage, an increase in the width of the keratinized gingiva, improvement in hygiene status and absence of dental hypersensitivity.

Elective lip piercing and gingival recession: case report.

Elective oral piercing as a form of ornamentation or self-expression appears to be gaining popularity in New Zealand and around the world. Several reports of the dangers associated with this practice appear in the dental and medical literature. This report presents a case of rapid, severe gingival recession in a previously periodontally-healthy young female, arising from trauma due to her lip piercing. The aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of her condition are outlined, as well as criteria for the dental community to consider when evaluating patients with facial piercing. The report highlight…

Lip-biting in patients with profound neuro-disability.

Profound neuro-disability due to severe brain damage affects approximately 1200 people per year in the UK. Approximately half of these patients exhibit exaggerated or abnormal oral reflexes. Biting, bruxism and ruminating movements may result in dental or soft tissue trauma, with severe lip or tongue lacerations. This paper describes 10 patients referred to the dental department at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability with lip bites and/or severe bruxism, during a 12-month period. Management options include: monitoring the lesion; smoothing teeth; providing a bite raising appliance; or extr…
