The benefits of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) in the menopause have been well demonstrated and are of significant importance, particularly with regard to prevention of osteoporosis and reduction in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. To investigate membrane lipid abnormalities and their possible role in copper deficiency anemia, we studied lipids, osmotic fragility, and viscosity of red blood cells (RBCs) of rats fed diets containing 1.1 mg Cu/kg (deficient, Cu-) and 6.0 mg Cu/kg (supplemented, Cu+) at age 3 wk for 9 wk. Two separate studies were carried out with acipimox, a new antilipolytic agent with long-lasting activity. First, in a randomized, double-blind, cross-over study a dose of 750 mg/day of acipimox versus placebo was employed for 60 days in 11 patients with type IV hyperlipoproteinemia. Female rats with 1-3/4 nephrectomy were divided in two groups and pair fed for five weeks diets differing in their linoleic acid content. The major sugar-containing lipids of some Actinomadura and Nocardiopis strains--recognized as an important agent of actinomycetoma -- were analyzed by thin-layer and gas-liquid chromatography. Bile acid kinetics, steroid balance and biliary lipid composition were studied in 8 patients with hyperlipoproteinaemia (HLP) type III (broad-beta-disease). As a general finding the formation of bile acids exceeded the range encountered in normolipidaemic subjects, but the mean net steroid balance remained normal. The fatty acid composition of the skin and plasma lipids is described in a patient severely affected by Refsum's disease whose plasma phytanic acid concentration was very high (3.1 mg/ml). In the epidermal lipids, especially in the phospholipid fraction, phytanic acid tended to replace linoleic acid and to some extent arachidonic acid. In some respects the changes in the skin in Refsum's disease resemble those of essential fatty acid deficiency.
