[Current role of the Zeiss extractor catheter. Comparative study with other methods. Presentation of 80 personal cases and a comprehensive review].

The present study compared the Zeiss and Dormia type extractors for ureteral calculi with the new methods of treatment (shock waves and laser) to determine the place of these extractors in our urological armamentarium today. The results and the complications in our series comprised of 80 cases are presented and the literature available on this subject reviewed. We discuss briefly the methods commonly used today, i. e., shock waves and laser, with special reference to the good results and scant complications. We can conclude from this study that these catheters continue to be useful in current

Successful multidisciplinary management of non-muscle-invasive upper tract urothelial carcinoma in a patient with HIV and concurrent staghorn calculus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection poses unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Literature on the perioperative management and outcomes of curative surgery for UTUC in people living with HIV (PLWH), particularly when complicated by conditions such as staghorn calculi, is exceptionally scarce. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old male presented with a 1-week history of urinary frequency and urgency. Two months prior, he had undergone ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy for a left staghorn calculus (details unav

Cystinuria: Diagnosis, Medical and Surgical Management, and Emerging Therapies. A Narrative Review.

Cystinuria is a hereditary aminoaciduria causing recurrent cystine nephrolithiasis, impaired quality of life and potential renal function decline. Despite established treatment guidelines, real-world data reveal a persistent gap between recommended targets and clinical outcomes. Preliminary data from the EUROCYS 2024 prospective European registry (269 patients, 29 centers, 8 countries) showed that only 16.3% of patients achieved the target urinary pH range, 55.2% remained above the conventional urinary cystine threshold of 250 mg/L, and approximately 39% experienced a new stone event within th

Retroaortic Left Renal Vein: A Case Series and Clinical Significance in Renal Surgery.

The retroaortic left renal vein (RLRV) is a rare anatomical variant in which the left renal vein passes posterior to the aorta. Although often asymptomatic, awareness of this anomaly is essential for avoiding vascular injury during retroperitoneal or renal surgery. We report three incidental cases of RLRV identified during imaging studies performed for unrelated renal or urinary conditions. A 53-year-old man presented with colicky left flank pain and multiple left renal calculi on computed tomography (CT). An incidental type I RLRV with orthotopic drainage into the inferior vena cava (IVC) at

Intrauterine device (IUD) migration completely into the abdominal cavity and half into the bladder to form a stone: a case report and mini-review.

The intrauterine device (IUD) is an important and highly effective means of contraception. Migration of the IUD, post implantation, out of the uterus is an infrequent complication, and its subsequent migration into the urinary bladder with formation of secondary bladder calculi, is even more infrequently reported. The authors report a 51 year old woman who had had her last child delivered via cesarean section 16 years ago. She underwent an IUD insertion in the next few months but was subsequently lost to follow up. Before detection of the ectopic state of the IUD she complained of dysuria and

The future of ureteroscopy.

Open ureterolithotomy and pyelolithotomy used to be first line therapy for treating kidney and ureteral stones. With the advent of shockwave lithotripsy, open stone surgery became less prevalent, but once ureteroscopy became more prevalent, open stone surgery became all but extinct. Advances in smaller, more flexible endoscopes and improvements in intracorporeal lithotripters, ureteroscopy has become a mainstay of therapy for kidney stones. The holmium:yttrium-aluminium-garnet laser can be utilized through flexible instruments and fragments any stone no matter what it is composed of. Digital i

Robot-assisted ureteral reconstruction combined with trans-trocar flexible ureteroscopy using a flexible and navigable suction ureteral access sheath: a case report and technical note.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous management of upper urinary tract stricture and renal calculi remains a technical challenge in minimally invasive urology. Conventional hybrid techniques combining robotic reconstruction with standard flexible ureteroscopy often face limitations such as impaired visualization, irrigation fluid leakage, and difficulty in managing a substantial stone burden. We report a refined hybrid technique that integrates a flexible and navigable suction ureteral access sheath (FANS) directly into the robot-assisted ureteral reconstructive workflow. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old

Laparoscopic Reverse Cholangiopancreatography (LRCP): Our Algorithm For Laparoscopic Common Bile Duct Exploration (LCBDE).

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE) is safe and efficacious. "Classic" LCBDE technique utilizes isolated choledochoscope-guided retrograde basketing; however, it is less effective than transcholedochal exploration. We report on the evolution of our LCBDE technique away from "classic" transcystic approach towards prioritizing antegrade clearance using a novel algorithm utilizing a variety of tools, which we term laparoscopic reverse cholangiopancreatography (LRCP). METHODS: We report an algorithm-driven LRCP technique for LCBDE that tailors intervention to the patient

Procedural factors outweigh anatomical morphometry in predicting postoperative pain following retrograde intrarenal surgery.

PURPOSE: Postoperative pain affects 23-45% of RIRS patients, but predictive factors remain unclear. This study evaluated whether anatomical morphometric assessment predicts postoperative pain when controlling for procedural variables in patients with normal upper tract anatomy, and identified which factors most significantly influence pain after RIRS. METHODS: This prospective single-center study included 420 consecutive patients undergoing RIRS (September 2024-May 2025). After exclusions, 320 patients completed three-week follow-up. Forty-five anatomical parameters and procedural variables (

Role of 'dusting and pop-dusting' using a high-powered (100 W) laser machine in the treatment of large stones (≥ 15 mm): prospective outcomes over 16 months.

Ureteroscopy and laser stone fragmentation (URSL) has had recent advancements with the more powerful laser systems with the ability to 'dust' and 'pop-dust' the stone. We wanted to look at the outcomes of this method for large stones (≥ 15 mm) using our new 100 W holmium laser. Over a period of 16 months (January 2017-April 2018), 50 patients underwent URSL for minimum cumulative stone size of ≥ 15 mm. Data were collected prospectively on patient and stone demographics and outcomes of URSL. The laser setting used was a power of 0.3-0.6 J and a frequency of 20-50 Hz using a long-pulse setting w
