A single photobiomodulation session selectively improves vocal stability and respiratory capacity in teachers with severe vocal fatigue.

Vocal fatigue (VF) is a significant occupational burden for professional voice users, such as teachers, for whom rapid and effective interventions remain limited. Photobiomodulation (PBM), a noninvasive therapy that uses low-intensity light to mitigate inflammation and promote tissue repair, is a promising therapeutic strategy. In this study, we investigated the immediate effects of a single PBM session on key acoustic and respiratory parameters in female teachers with VF. In this single-arm, pre-post clinical trial, we enrolled 41 female primary school teachers (age range: 28-40 years) with s

Mechanisms and parameters of photobiomodulation for neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders: whether and how to apply?

Neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders are among the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide, with current treatment modalities including traditional therapies, psychological and supportive interventions, and emerging therapeutic approaches. Photobiomodulation (PBM), a neuromodulatory technique using lasers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs), has emerged as a promising intervention for enhancing brain function by stimulating neural activity, thereby protecting brain tissue and restoring function. Despite its widespread application, the precise mechanisms underlying the selectio

The impact of intervertebral disc hydration on the photothermal responses and carbonization properties in low-energy laser therapy.

Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression (PLDD) is a minimally invasive treatment for lumbar disc herniation (LDH), but its effectiveness can be influenced by factors like laser power and treatment time, which vary with the degree of disc degeneration. Reduced water content in degenerated discs may affect treatment outcomes. This study examines how low-energy laser treatment impacts intervertebral discs with different water content, focusing on photothermal and carbonization effects. Fresh intervertebral discs from adult pig spines (L2-L5) were used. Discs with poor and rich water content were pr

Hair density response to photobiomodulation in canine alopecia X is measured reliably with an ordinal scale: a randomized, controlled, double-blind study.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an ordinal hair density score (HDS), determine its inter-rater agreement, and use it in a trial of photobiomodulation as a sole treatment for alopecia X. METHODS: A 5-level ordinal HDS system was developed. Four blinded veterinary dermatologists independently graded a 50-image reference set using the HDS. Inter-rater agreement was assessed using the quadratic-weighted Fleiss κ, Brennan-Prediger, and Gwet AC2 coefficients. A double-blind, randomized, controlled trial was performed using a convenience sample of alopecia X dogs recruited based on inclusion and exclusion cri

Adjuvant Effect of Photobiomodulation in the Pain Relief and Healing of Ulcerative Lesions from Mammary Tuberculosis.

This case report describes the use of photobiomodulation (PBM) as a complementary therapy in a 45-year-old patient with mammary tuberculosis (TB). The patient received conventional treatment, including antibiotic therapy and analgesics. Three months after the diagnosis, breast pain persisted (Visual Analog Scale [VAS] score: 8), and the mammary lesions had not healed. Adjuvant treatment with PBM (660 nm and 808 nm lasers, 100 mW, 3,333 mW/cm2, 20 J per session) was performed over 12 sessions in 38 days. After four PBM sessions, the patient reported no pain (VAS score: 0) and stopped using anal

Photobiomodulation CME part II: Clinical applications in dermatology.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is an emerging treatment modality in dermatology with increasing office and home-based use. PBM is the use of various light sources in the red light (620-700 nm) and near-infrared (700-1440 nm) spectrum as a form of light therapy. PBM is often administered through low-level lasers or light-emitting diodes. Studies show that PBM can be used effectively to treat conditions secondary to cancer therapies, alopecia, ulcers, herpes simplex virus, acne, skin rejuvenation, wounds, and scars. PBM offers patients many benefits compared to other treatments. It is noninvasive, cos

Photobiomodulation Therapy and the Glymphatic System: Promising Applications for Augmenting the Brain Lymphatic Drainage System.

The glymphatic system is a glial-dependent waste clearance pathway in the central nervous system, devoted to drain away waste metabolic products and soluble proteins such as amyloid-beta. An impaired brain glymphatic system can increase the incidence of neurovascular, neuroinflammatory, and neurodegenerative diseases. Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy can serve as a non-invasive neuroprotective strategy for maintaining and optimizing effective brain waste clearance. In this review, we discuss the crucial role of the glymphatic drainage system in removing toxins and waste metabolites from the br
