The effects of phenobarbitone, leptazol, dexamphetamine, iproniazid, imipramine, LSD, chlorpromazine, reserpine and hydroxyzine on the in vivo levels of adenine nucleotides and phosphocreatine in the rat brain.

1. Enzymic and ion-exchange chromatographic analyses were used to measure adenosine triphosphate (ATP), diphosphate (ADP) and monophosphate (AMP) in brain extracts from rats treated with a wide range of centrally acting drugs. Phosphocreatine (PC) was assayed by the acid molybdate method.2. An anaesthetic dose of phenobarbitone caused an increase in brain levels of ATP and PC, and a reduction in ADP and AMP. A convulsant dose of leptazol gave rise to precisely opposite effects. Subanaesthetic (hypnotic) and subconvulsive doses of the two drugs, respectively, produced no alterations in brain nu

Down the Rabbit Hole: A Large-Scale Survey of Psychedelic Users' Patterns of Use and Perceived Effects.

The ever-changing landscape surrounding legality and accessibility of psychedelics and their increasing popularity make it imperative to better understand the nature of psychedelic use by the general population. To this end, 1,486 eligible respondents (Mage = 29.58, 67.1% male) residing in the United States completed an online survey designed to assess the types of psychedelics used, methods of administration and dosing, frequency of use, intentions for use, context/environments in which they are used, perceived acute effects, frequency of those effects and distress about them, and their perce

The Varieties of Psychedelic Expertise in 1960s Canada: The Psychiatrists behind the Addiction Research Foundation's Study of LSD Therapy.

In 1962, Ontario's Addiction Research Foundation launched the first double-blind randomized controlled trial of LSD therapy as a treatment for alcoholism. The study, which found that LSD was not effective, was heavily criticized by other therapists working with the drug. These critics argued that the Toronto researchers who carried out the study were biased against LSD and used an anti-therapeutic method that was destined to produce negative results. Instead of creating a comfortable and supportive environment, they stressed, the Toronto group restrained patients to a bed in a hospital ward, u

Hallucinogens in Mental Health: Preclinical and Clinical Studies on LSD, Psilocybin, MDMA, and Ketamine.

A revamped interest in the study of hallucinogens has recently emerged, especially with regard to their potential application in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. In the last decade, a plethora of preclinical and clinical studies have confirmed the efficacy of ketamine in the treatment of depression. More recently, emerging evidence has pointed out the potential therapeutic properties of psilocybin and LSD, as well as their ability to modulate functional brain connectivity. Moreover, MDMA, a compound belonging to the family of entactogens, has been demonstrated to be useful to treat post

Stable quantitative EEG difference in post-LSD visual disorder by split-half analysis: evidence for disinhibition.

Hallucinogen persisting perceptual disorder (HPPD) may follow the ingestion of LSD or other hallucinogens in a subset of users. It is characterized by chronic, intermittent or constant visual hallucinations of many sorts persisting beyond the period of acute drug effects. We studied 44 LSD-induced HPPD subjects and 88 matched controls to search for spectral and evoked potential differences using quantitative EEG (qEEG). HPPD subjects demonstrated faster alpha frequency and shorter VER (visual evoked response) latency, consistent with prior animal and human data on response to acute LSD adminis

Anorexia and hyperphagia produced by five pharmacologic classes of hallucinogens.

The acute actions of five prototype hallucinogens administered SC on food consumption in 23 hr food deprived dogs were compared with the anorexic effect of d-amphetamine and the hyperphagic effect of sodium pentobarbital. Comparisons were made on the basis of dose-response relationships. Among the hallucinogens decreasing food intake, both LSD and atropine produced substantial anorexia, but the slopes of their dose-response curves were clearly different from d-amphetamine. Phencyclidine and the opioid SKF 10,047 suppressed food intake also; their individual dose-effect curves were parallel to

Anophthalmia in an infant of parents using LSD.

We have described a unilateral anophthalmia in an infant with normal chromosome studies born to parents who took LSD before and during pregnancy. In view of the lack of any other fetal abnormalities in this child, known to be associated with LSD, we report this case to suggest that anophthalmia may be a new drug-related defect. A complete drug history of the parents should be taken in cases of congenital abnormalities to accumulates further data, which will point conclusively to the etiology of anophthalmia and possibly other congenital defects.

Sequential patterns of multiple-drug use among high school students.

Only recently have multiple-drug use studies involving more than heroin and marijuana begun to be reported in the literature. Four of these studies have found evidence that multiple-drug use is a progressive phenomenon, although the particular pattern of multiple-drug use reported in different populations varies somewhat. This study examines the patterns of multiple-drug use reported by a random sample of 1,094 high school students living in greater New Haven, Conn in the 1972-1973 academic school year. Scalogram analysis reveals a progressive relationship for nine drugs: alcohol, marijuana, h
