Neural correlates of letter-string length and lexicality during reading in a regular orthography.

Behavioral studies have shown that short letter strings are read faster than long letter-strings and words are read faster than nonwords. Here, we describe the dynamics of letter-string length and lexicality effects at the cortical level, using magnetoencephalography, during a reading task in Finnish with long (eight-letter) and short (four-letter) word/nonword stimuli. Length effects were observed in two spatially and temporally distinct cortical activations: (1) in the occipital cortex at about 100 msec by the strength of activation, regardless of the lexical status of the stimuli, and (2) i…

Sleeping brain oscillates with intensity-induced auditory rhythm.

The rhythmic patterns embedded in auditory stimuli hold considerable significance, as individuals often exhibit a subconscious tendency to synchronize bodily movements with perceived rhythms during wakefulness. However, the extent to which the sleeping brain can discern specific acoustic attributes, such as sound intensity, and entrain to intensity-induced rhythms remains largely unexplored. Here, we employed a frequency-tagging paradigm with electroencephalographic (EEG) and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) simultaneous recording to investigate whether the sleeping brain could perceive the inten

Distinct neural oscillations predict individual differences in feedback-guided cognitive flexibility.

Cognitive flexibility is the ability to keep or update contextual cognitive representations. The underlying neural mechanisms and how it is influenced by individual sensitivity to feedback are not known. We measured cognitive flexibility under uncertainty with the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and brain activity with magnetoencephalography. Cognitive flexibility had large interindividual variability as indexed by the learning speed. Using a behavioral sequential learning model, we show that this variability in cognitive flexibility is predicted by individual sensitivity to feedback and anticipat…

Developmental changes in MEG oscillatory activity during visuomotor adaptation: Differential maturation of feedforward and feedback-related mechanisms.

Visuomotor adaptation, the ability to recalibrate movements using visual feedback, continues to mature throughout childhood, yet the neural mechanisms driving this development are not well characterized. We recorded magnetoencephalography (MEG) in children (6-12 years) and adults as they reached visual targets under a 45° cursor rotation and examined cortical oscillations at two movement stages, before peak velocity (predominantly feedforward) and after it (predominantly feedback-based). Both child and adult groups showed adaptation in their cursor movements, and older participants were faster…

Linguistic pitch is hierarchically encoded in the right ventral stream.

A challenge for speech perception research is to explain how listeners transform speech sounds into meaning. Using MEG and complementary analytical methods, we expose the neural dynamics that generate meaningful linguistic units (e.g., sentence type: question, statement) that are abstracted from lower-level perceptual cues (fundamental frequency (f0) modulations). In analogy to the well-established left-lateralized hierarchical organization of a ventral stream in the domains of vision and auditory processing, we show that the emergence of abstract f0 representations is supported by a right-lat

Motor-Related Neural Dynamics are Modulated by Regular Cannabis Use Among People with HIV.

Recent work has shown that people with HIV (PWH) exhibit deficits in cognitive control and altered brain responses in the underlying cortical networks, and that regular cannabis use has a normalizing effect on these neural responses. However, the impact of regular cannabis use on the neural oscillatory dynamics underlying motor control deficits in PWH remains less understood. Herein, 102 control cannabis users, control nonusers, PWH who regularly use cannabis, and PWH who do not use cannabis performed a motor control task with and without interference during high-density magnetoencephalography…

Sentence superiority in the reading brain.

When a sequence of written words is briefly presented and participants are asked to identify just one word at a post-cued location, then word identification accuracy is higher when the word is presented in a grammatically correct sequence compared with an ungrammatical sequence. This sentence superiority effect has been reported in several behavioral studies and two EEG investigations. Taken together, the results of these studies support the hypothesis that the sentence superiority effect is primarily driven by rapid access to a sentence-level representation via partial word identification pro

Impaired Cortical Tracking of Speech in Children with Developmental Language Disorder.

In developmental language disorder (DLD), learning to comprehend and express oneself with spoken language is impaired, but the reason for this remains unknown. Using millisecond-scale magnetoencephalography recordings combined with machine learning models, we investigated whether the possible neural basis of this disruption lies in poor cortical tracking of speech. The stimuli were common spoken Finnish words (e.g., dog, car, hammer) and sounds with corresponding meanings (e.g., dog bark, car engine, hammering). In both children with DLD (10 boys and 7 girls) and typically developing (TD) cont…

Different computations over the same inputs produce selective behavior in algorithmic brain networks.

A key challenge in neuroimaging remains to understand where, when, and now particularly how human brain networks compute over sensory inputs to achieve behavior. To study such dynamic algorithms from mass neural signals, we recorded the magnetoencephalographic (MEG) activity of participants who resolved the classic XOR, OR, and AND functions as overt behavioral tasks (N = 10 participants/task, N-of-1 replications). Each function requires a different computation over the same inputs to produce the task-specific behavioral outputs. In each task, we found that source-localized MEG activity progre

Neuromagnetic 40 Hz Auditory Steady-State Response in the left auditory cortex is related to language comprehension in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Language impairment is comorbid in most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but its neural mechanisms are still poorly understood. Some studies hypothesize that the atypical low-level sensory perception in the auditory cortex accounts for the abnormal language development in these children. One of the potential non-invasive measures of such low-level perception can be the cortical gamma-band oscillations registered with magnetoencephalography (MEG), and 40 Hz Auditory Steady-State Response (40 Hz ASSR) is a reliable paradigm for eliciting auditory gamma response. Although there is re…

Interacting with volatile environments stabilizes hidden-state inference and its brain signatures.

Making accurate decisions in uncertain environments requires identifying the generative cause of sensory cues, but also the expected outcomes of possible actions. Although both cognitive processes can be formalized as Bayesian inference, they are commonly studied using different experimental frameworks, making their formal comparison difficult. Here, by framing a reversal learning task either as cue-based or outcome-based inference, we found that humans perceive the same volatile environment as more stable when inferring its hidden state by interaction with uncertain outcomes than by observati

Brain Excitability in Tension-Type Headache: a Separate Entity from Migraine?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tension-type headache is often regarded as the "normal" headache due to its high prevalence and mild disability in contrast with migraine. Clinically, both headaches are common comorbidities to each other. To date there has been many studies linked migraine to a brain excitability disorder. This review summarized earlier studies on brain excitability of TTH and discuss if TTH is a separate clinical entity from migraine as suggested by the diagnostic criteria. RECENT FINDINGS: A recent magnetoencephalographic study from our group enrolled patients with "strict-criteria" TTH

Optically pumped magnetometers reveal fasciculations non-invasively.

OBJECTIVE: This proof-of-principle-study evaluated the extent to which spontaneous activity (SA) of the muscle can be detected via non-invasive magnetomyography (MMG) with optically pumped magnetometers (OPM). METHODS: Five patients, who together exhibited all forms of SA (fibrillations, positive sharp waves, fasciculations, myotonic discharges, complex-repetitive discharges) with conventional needle electromyography (EMG), were studied by OPM-MMG and simultaneous surface EMG (sEMG) while at rest, during light muscle activation, and when a muscle stretch reflex was elicited.
