Mandibular fractures are rare in infants under one year of age, accounting for only 0.9%-2.6% of pediatric mandibular injuries. Their infrequency is due to the unique anatomical and developmental features of the infant mandible, including increased bone elasticity and minimal exposure to high-impact trauma. Diagnosis and management are often challenging, particularly given the difficulty in symptom communication, presence of unfused skeletal structures, and developing tooth buds. We described a case of a 3-month-old infant who sustained concurrent fractures of the mandibular symphysis and left…

Point-of-care ultrasound has been shown to be effective in diagnosing many types of fractures, including nasal fractures, but it is not commonly used in pediatrics to diagnose mandibular fractures. We describe a case of a mandibular fracture diagnosed by point-of-care ultrasound in the pediatric emergency department. Additional studies are needed in the pediatric population to determine if point-of-care ultrasound can diagnose mandibular fracture rapidly and accurately, expediting diagnosis and potentially minimizing exposure to ionizing radiation in patients with no point-of-care ultrasound e…

Due to the disadvantage of maxillomandibular fixation, the semi-rigid and rigid internal fixations have been employed to provide early mouth motion. To find the proper fixation and adequate stability, the biomechanical performance of these systems was assessed using Finite Element (FE) method. The 3D mandible model with a symphyseal fracture, teeth, periodontal ligament, and fixation devices were created for the FE analyzes. The bone structure was determined as a transverse isotropic whereas the fixation devices were titanium. The load includes Masseter, Medial Pterygoid, and Temporalis muscul

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a group of genetic disorders affecting skeletal and connective tissue that commonly presents with a history of multiple fractures. In particular, Osteogenesis imperfecta type III is associated with severe bone deformities, specifically in the mandible with deformities such as mandibular overjet and cross-bite. We report a case of a bilateral mandibular fracture in a young adult diagnosed with Osteogenesis imperfecta type III, managed surgically with open reduction internal fixation.

Introduction We present our experiences using a modified surgical approach from the edge of the tragus for mandibular condyle fractures, to reduce the risk of postoperative complications and visible scars. Materials and methods Thirty-two patients presenting with mandibular condyle fractures were treated through a modified approach on the edge of the tragus. The age of the patients ranged from 6 to 62 years. All mandibular condyle fractures were fixed. The patients were asked to start open-mouth training one week postoperatively, undergoing a cone-beam computed tomography examination and clini

Mandibular fractures are rare, most commonly occurring in young male patients who present with facial trauma. The etiology, incidence, and presentation vary among previous publications depending on cultural and socioeconomic factors of the region of origin. This multi-institutional study aims to present demographic characteristics, surgical treatment, and clinical outcomes of surgical repair of mandible fractures in the United States. An analysis of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) adult databases of the years 2006 through 2014 was perf…

INTRODUCTION: Management of mandibular condylar fractures is difficult in children with their inherently dynamic and unstable deciduous and mixed dentitions. We present a variation of the conservative fixed orthodontic approach that was used as an adjunct to aid in the reduction of a bilateral condylar fracture in a pediatric patient.
METHODS: A boy, aged 10 years 9 months, came with clinical signs and symptoms of mandibular fracture after being involved in a motor vehicle accident. A computed tomography scan showed a vertical fracture on the left condylar head, a displaced fracture of the ri

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: How the location of a ferrule affects the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular premolars is unclear.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the effect of ferrule location on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular premolars.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-two extracted human mandibular premolars were selected and divided into 6 test groups (n = 12) according to ferrule location: control group, GHT; endodontically treated teeth without endodontic posts and crowns, GCF; teeth with a 2 mm circumferential ferrule,

Our aim was to measure the forces that fracture teeth during extraction based on the effectiveness of the extraction forceps, and to compare them with data collected about forces applied to extracted teeth that did not fracture. We studied 208 patients whose teeth fractured during both the standard and our new method of extraction: maxillary incisors (n=79) extracted with forceps 1 (maxillary incisor forceps), and both maxillary (n=95) and mandibular incisors (n=34) extracted with forceps 13 (mandibular premolar forceps). Forces needed to fracture were assessed with a specially-designed instru

The objective of the present study was to compare assessments of the mandibular bone as fracture risk indicators for 277 men and women. The mandibular trabecular bone was evaluated in periapical radiographs, using a visual index, as dense, mixed dense and sparse, or sparse. Bone texture was analysed using a computer-based method in which the number of transitions from trabeculae to intertrabecular spaces was calculated. The sum of the sizes and intensities of the spaces between the trabeculae was calculated using Jaw-X software. Women had a statistically significantly greater number of fractur

As the angle is a weak region in the continuity of mandible, so it is more prone to fracture. It has been proven time and again that coronoid fracture results from a strong sudden contraction of temporalis. Muscular forces influence the remodeling of bones. Orofacial dystonia is a centrally mediated disease in which there is an uncontrolled spasmodic contraction of facial and masticatory muscles. This continuous force applied over a long period of time has the potential to unfavorably remodel or weaken bone. A case is presented in which the dystonic action of facial musculature gradually resor

This is a unique case of isolated lateral fracture/dislocation of the condylar process in a 3-year-old child injured on an escalator. Immediate closed reduction under general anesthesia successfully restored condylar height and premorbid dental occlusion. Maxillomandibular fixation was not used because mandibular mobilization was encouraged. Clinical follow-up confirmed maintenance of normal dental occlusion and temporomandibular joint function.
