Preliminary observations on maternal rating of health of children: data from three subspecialty clinics.

Although routinely used in health surveys, the factors affecting maternal perceptions of health in children, especially those with health problems, have received little examination. This question has been addressed using a telephone interview of families of 483 children followed in one of three clinics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia: the Neonatal Follow-up Program, the Pediatric Rheumatology Center and the Spina Bifida Program. Limitations in activities of daily living due to the health of the child, medical care use and variables indicative of socio-economic disadvantage were associat

Maternal-fetal dialogue and immunological programming: from fetal development to long-term health outcomes.

The prenatal period is a critical phase of high cellular plasticity, during which the immune system develops while maintaining essential maternal-fetal tolerance. This review examines the ontogeny of the hematopoietic system and the sequential maturation of immune components, as well as the mechanisms through which maternal inflammatory and microbial signals act as epigenetic cues that can program the offspring's long-term immunological resilience. Rather than merely a precursor to the adult immune system, the fetal and neonatal immune configuration is a highly specialized state, functionally

Complementary Feeding Frequency and Maternal Health: Reducing Anxiety and Improving Sleep Through Biobehavioral Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Maternal caregivers of infants frequently experience anxiety and sleep disturbances. Complementary feeding may influence maternal mental health through biobehavioral pathways, yet these mechanisms remain insufficiently explored. This study examined these associations and the moderating role of infant age. METHODS: We recruited 543 mother-child pairs with children aged 6-23 months from a maternal-child health center in southwestern China. Five WHO-recommended IYCF-CF indicators were assessed: Minimum Dietary Diversity, Minimum Meal Frequency, Minimum Acceptable Diet, Egg and/or Fle

Associations between maternal adverse childhood experiences and children's physical health conditions: A longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), defined as negative events experienced before 18 years of age (e.g., physical abuse), have been linked to intergenerational impacts on children's physical health. However, research examining associations between maternal ACEs and preschool children's non-psychiatric neurological, respiratory, sensory, digestive, immune, renal, and hematologic conditions remains limited or non-existent, particularly in Canada. This novel Canadian study examined these associations in preschool-aged children. STUDY DESIGN: This study used data from the l

Maternal Health Nurse Competency in Addressing Emergency Obstetric Care: An Assessment in Southern Mozambique.

Background: Quality perinatal health care depends considerably on health workforce competency. Improving Maternal and Child Health Nurse (MCHN) competency is urgently needed in low-middle-income countries, especially to manage key perinatal conditions related to prevalent poor maternal health outcomes, such as pre-eclampsia and hemorrhage. Objective: This study assesses the competency of MCHNs in addressing severe pre-eclampsia and antepartum hemorrhage. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted from 4 November to 10 December 2022. A structured questionnaire and clinical vignettes con…

Emotion regulation during pregnancy: A pathway from maternal childhood maltreatment to perinatal mental health.

The perinatal period is a critical time during which the effects of maternal early life adversity can manifest for both the pregnant individual and their child. Early life adversity in the form of childhood maltreatment (CM) - encompassing abuse, neglect, and witnessing interpersonal violence - is widely prevalent. History of CM is linked to elevated perinatal mental health problems. Emotion regulation difficulties represent one potential mechanism through which CM can contribute to elevated risk for perinatal mental health. As such, this longitudinal study explored how CM influences maternal

Maternal physical health and breastfeeding problems in Croatia: national online survey of new mothers.

OBJECTIVE: To document maternal physical health and breastfeeding problems in the first six months after giving birth in Croatia during the pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire between February and April 2022 among resident Croatian women who had enrolled in the RODA ('Parents in Action') online antenatal course. Women aged 18 + years, who had given birth in a Croatian maternity facility between February 2020 and December 2021 were eligible. Global health systems strengthening: FIGO's strategic view on reducing maternal and newborn mortality worldwide.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that successful health systems strengthening (HSS) projects have addressed disparities and inequities in maternal and perinatal care in low-income countries. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review covered the period between 1980 and 2022, focusing on successful HSS interventions within health systems' seven core components that improved maternal and perinatal care. RESULTS: The findings highlight the importance of integrating quality interventions into robust health systems, as this has been shown to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. However, several challe

Differing Within-Household Food Security Statuses Are Associated with Varied Maternal Mental Health Outcomes.

Household food insecurity is not necessarily equally experienced by all household members, with mothers often changing their intake first when food resources are limited. The purpose of this study was to understand the association between maternal mental health and intrahousehold differences in food security statuses. A cross-sectional survey was administered to Virginia mothers with low income (August-October 2021), assessing validated measures of food security, mental and physical health and related factors. Participants (n = 570) were grouped according to the food security status of adults

Exploring Maternal and Child Health Among Tribal Communities in India: A Life Course Perspective.

India experiences high rates of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, with tribal communities disproportionately affected. Tribal populations frequently live in unfavorable socio-economic conditions and deficient social health indicators, culminating in adverse health consequences. Using a life course perspective, this qualitative study explored risks over the life course that contribute to maternal and child health problems among tribal populations in India. Additionally, the study examined barriers to utilization of healthcare services during the pregnancy and postpartum periods. Data

Clinical Impact of Metformin Therapy on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Maternal-Infant Health Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the impact of metformin treatment on clinical parameters (blood glucose, inflammation, hormone levels) and outcomes for both mothers and infants in cases of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: A comparative study with a retrospective cohort design was conducted. A total of 96 patients diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus over the past three years in our hospital were included. The participants were divided into two groups: a control group receiving insulin treatment and a study group receiving metformin treatment. We compared the clinica

Black Women's Maternal Health: Insights From Community Based Participatory Research in Newark, New Jersey.

This study on Black women's maternal health engaged a group of six community members in a community based participatory research project in a state with one of the largest racial disparities in maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity in the United States. The community members conducted 31 semi-structured interviews with other Black women who had given birth within the past 3 years to examine their experiences throughout the perinatal and post-partum period. Four main themes emerged: (1) challenges related to the structure of healthcare, including insurance gaps, long wait times, lack…

Understanding links between maternal perinatal posttraumatic stress symptoms and infant socioemotional and physical health.

Maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are associated with adverse consequences for older children, but very few studies have examined links between perinatal maternal PTSS and infant outcomes. Trauma exposure and psychopathology, including PTSS, is often heightened for women during pregnancy through 1 year postpartum. Therefore, the perinatal period may be a critical time for understanding the risk maternal PTSS and other mental health factors pose to the socioemotional and physical health of infants. The present study explored the relation between maternal PTSS and infant socioemotion
