Eleven case reports involving herpes zoster infection associated with alveolar bone necrosis and tooth loss were reviewed in order to develop a patient profile for this rare combination of physical findings. The clinical course of a 56-year-old white woman with herpes zoster infection of the fifth cranial nerve and related alveolar bone necrosis, tooth loss, and oroantral fistula development is reported. The etiology and management of herpes zoster infection associated with destructive oral sequelae are discussed.

Parapharyngeal space refers to the potential space under skull base between masticatory muscles and pharyngeal muscles, ranging from skull base at the top to hyoid bone at the bottom. The outer lateral wall consists of medial pterygoid muscle, deep parotid lobe and lower jawbone, lateral pharyngeal wall, medial pterygoid, deep lobe of parotid gland and mandible constitute the lateral wall, lateral pharyngeal wall forms medial wall, and prevertebral fascia constitutes the posterior wall, generally forming an inverted pyramid lacuna. Parapharyngeal space is divided into prestyloid space and post

INTRODUCTION: Faciomaxillary fractures (FMF) occur in a significant proportion of trauma patients. Nearly all polytrauma patients and even those with isolated FMF are managed under general anesthesia for definitive management. We propose the use of regional nerve blocks as a safe and effective means for open reduction and fixation of isolated FMF.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The aim is to evaluate the feasibility, effectiveness and safety of base of skull maxillomandibular and distal trigeminal nerve blocks in the management of FMF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten young adults with fractures of the zygom

BACKGROUND: Reports of osteonecrosis and spontaneous tooth loss following herpes zoster infection of the fifth cranial are extremely rare. Only 39 previously recorded cases of post-zoster osteonecrosis have been found in the literature. The unusual feature of the case of interest to the dental surgeon is a rare complication of tooth exfoliation and maxillary osteonecrosis.
CASE REPORT: This article reports a case of 52-year-old man with herpes zoster infection of the trigeminal nerve and related alveolar bone necrosis and teeth loss. The etiology and management of herpes zoster infection asso

A 65-year-old man with a history of renal transplantation presented with facial pain, purulent nasal discharge, and periorbital swelling. Signs of optic nerve compromise developed and persisted despite medial orbital wall decompression. Further imaging revealed an orbital floor abscess secondary to direct communication of a maxillary pseudomonal sinusitis. Full recovery was achieved after further surgical drainage via an endoscopic endonasal approach. Failure to improve after surgical decompression is an indication for repeat imaging. Immunocompromised patients can present atypically. Orbital

A 32-year-old diver repeatedly reported pain in the right side of the face after diving. He felt strong pain on pressure over the right face combined with hypaesthesia of the infraorbital nerve. In addition, he reported nasal breathing obstruction and problems regulating pressure in the middle ear. ENT consultation revealed a septal deviation to the right side of the nasal cavity. CT diagnosis showed the typical picture of chronic pansinusitis with total transfer of the right frontal sinus, subtotal transfer of the right ethmoid and subtotal transfer of the right maxillary sinus. Following suc

Restoration of the atrophied posterior mandibular alveolus has been a surgical challenge in the past. Many treatment options have been published, each with unique shortcomings. This study will review and compare these techniques to a new type of implant, the transverse alveolar maxillary/mandibular implant (TAMMI). Using modified Nobel Biocare Brånemark System zygomatic implants that were shortened to 11.5, 13, 15, 18, 20, 22.5, or 25 mm, the authors reconstructed atrophied posterior mandibles. These TAMMIs were placed at a 45-degree angle, engaging both the crest of the ridge and the buccal c

Fibrous dysplasia is a developmental anomaly of bone, often affecting the facial bones. We treated a patient who had fibrous dysplasia involving the right maxillary and sphenoid bones. The patient had a sudden loss of visual acuity to R.E.: counting fingers. Visual fields demonstrated a central scotoma, and retrobulbar neuritis was diagnosed. When vision failed to improve spontaneously, however, radiologic studies were performed. These showed compromise of the optic canal by bony proliferation and an apparent mucocele at the orbital apex. Surgical exploration disclosed fibrous dysplastic bone

The juxtaoral organ of Chievitz (JOOC) is a part of microanatomy composed of bland epithelial islands closely associated with small nerves and usually described within the soft tissue on the lingual aspect of the posterior mandible. Similar structures are documented in the posterior tongue. There is a risk of misinterpretation as carcinoma showing perineural invasion. An audit was undertaken of diagnosed cases of the JOOC and similar neuroepithelial structures identified within the oral soft tissues of surgical specimens. Nineteen cases were identified. Epithelial islands ranged < 0.5-4 mm in

The two-dimensional image makes it difficult to determine the anatomic locations during the Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), which causes many complications. The nasal columella is the best mark to identify the distance to the operating sites during the FESS. In this study, we measured the distances and angles from the base of columella to each important landmark: the anterior end of the middle turbinate, the ethmoid bulla, the posterior and superior end of the uncinate process, the basal lamina, the posterior wall of the ethmoid sinus, the posterior and superior wall of the sphenoi

Giant cerebellopontine angle (CPA) epidermoid cysts may envelop multiple cranial nerves, yet patients often present with clinically isolated trigeminal neuralgia. The anatomical basis for this selective vulnerability is incompletely appreciated in routine clinical practice. A 48-year-old man presented with a five-year history of progressive left-sided trigeminal neuralgia involving the maxillary and mandibular divisions. Pain had become severe and refractory to high-dose carbamazepine, with substantial functional and psychological decline. Neurological examination was otherwise unremarkable, w

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Disorders of the equine sphenopalatine sinus, including empyema and neoplasia, have been reported to cause damage to cranial nerves II and V. However, the clinical anatomy of these sinuses is not well described in horses.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the anatomy of the sphenopalatine sinuses in a range of equidae and, in particular, to examine the relationship of these sinuses to adjacent major nerves and vessels.
METHODS: The anatomy of the sphenoidal and palatine paranasal sinuses was examined in 16 equidae, primarily using transverse skull sections. Relevant structu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: External nasal neuralgia is a rare syndrome of atypical facial pain for which there is limited reports in the scientific literature. We aim to review diagnosis and provide an update on treatments for this rare condition.
RECENT FINDINGS: Etiology has been documented as post-traumatic due to direct trauma to the nose area and in few case reports, idiopathic. Sensory innervation of the nose arises from the ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the trigeminal nerve. Direct injury to the nerve appears to be the etiology of post-traumatic external nasal neuralgia. Pathophysiolog
