Neuroendocrine carcinoma arising in a wound of the postoperative maxillary sinus.

We report a case of a neuroendocrine carcinoma arising in a wound of the postoperative maxillary sinus that was difficult to distinguish from a postoperative maxillary cyst. The patient was a 65-year-old Japanese woman who complained of left exophthalmos with cheek swelling and eye movement disorders. In past history, she had, 40 years previously undergone operation on the bilateral maxillary sinus by Caldwell-Luc's method. In a preoperative computed tomography, a mass occupied the left maxillary sinus showing irregular densities with destruction of the posterior bone walls and invasion into t…

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the maxillary sinus: a rare case.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare tumor that commonly involves the salivary glands. EMC of the maxillary sinus is extremely rare. We describe here a case of a 50-year-old patient who presented with right cheek swelling for 7 years and bilateral nasal obstruction and right nasal bleeding for 3 months. A pinkish polypoidal mass was seen in the right nasal cavity. Computed tomography scan revealed an expansile soft tissue mass in the right maxillary sinus with erosion of all of its walls. Histopathological examination of the excised specimen confirmed myoepithelial carcinoma with…

Cavernous hemagioma of the maxillary sinus: a rare cause of epistaxis.

BACKGROUND: A case of cavernous hemangioma of the maxillary. METHOD: A 25 year old lady presented with history of nasal obstruction, recurrent epistaxis and headache. On exam she had a mass in the left osteomeatal complex that was friable and bled easily on palpation. Computerized tomography of the paranasal sinuses 2mm coronal cuts showed complete opacification of the left maxillary sinus and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 1.5 x 3 x 2.5 cm lobulated soft tissue mass lesion that enhanced with intravenous gadolinium administration, but no flow-void signals were present. Histologically, …

[Specific features of the development of chronic inflammation in the maxillary sinus].

The present morphological study was based on the analysis of materials obtained during the surgical treatment of 64 patients aged from 15 to 68 years presenting with long-term chronic purulent maxillary sinusitis. All the patients had been inadequately treated with antibacterial preparations during the pre-hospitalization period. It was shown that the patients developed well-apparent pathomorphological changes in maxillary sinus mucosa that promoted chronization of the inflammatory process.

Complications associated with implant migration into the maxillary sinus cavity.

BACKGROUND: Migration of dental implants into the maxillary sinus is an uncommon, but increasingly reported complication. Implant migration may result from initial lack of primary stability, intrasinusal and nasal pressure changes, autoimmune reaction to the implant or incorrect distribution of occlusal forces. This retrospective study aims at analyzing the factors that may influence implant migration into the maxillary sinus cavity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen patients presenting a total 15 implants that migrated into the maxillary sinus were recruited. Diagnosis of this complication was …

Inflammatory pseudotumor of maxillary sinus: Mimicking as an aggressive malignancy.

Inflammatory pseudotumor is a rare entity in the head and neck region. Clinically it behaves as an aggressive lesion with extensive destruction but considered to be a benign reactive process. Because of its extensive involvement and infiltrative nature, it is confused as a malignancy. Most of them respond very well to corticosteroid and surgical excision.

[Intrasinusal and extrasinusal space-occupying lesion of the maxillary sinus].

A 72-year-old healthy male patient presented with a painless mass on the left cheek which had been growing for 3 months as well as swollen cervical lymph nodes. Computed tomography revealed a space-occupying lesion on the facial wall of the sinus. Biopsy and histological examination of the lesion and a lymph node revealed Hodgkin's and Sternberg-Reed cells. The diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease was confirmed immunohistologically by the detection of atypical blast cell infiltrates with reactivity for CD30 and CD15 surface antigens.

Extension of Pindborg tumor to the maxillary sinus: a case report.

The calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor is a benign epithelial odontogenic lesion that accounts for less than 1% of all odontogenic tumors. It is most frequently seen in the posterior areas of the mandible. Extension of this lesion to the maxillary sinus is extremely rare. In this paper, we report the fourth of such cases which has been reported, up to now. This tumor was encased between the right maxillary lateral and canine roots with extension to the maxillary sinus. Histologically, the tumor is composed of sheets of epithelial cells with eosinophilic or clear cytoplasm, intercellular b…

[Diffusion of methylene blue in the human maxillary sinus mucosa].

The coefficient of diffusion of methylene blue in pathologically changed human maxillary sinus mucosa in vitro has been estimated for the first time. The mean value of the diffusion coefficient is (4.8 +/- 2.9) x 10(-7) cm2/s. The method is based on the registration of the dynamics of reflectance of tissue samples under the action of the dye. The diffusion coefficient has been estimated by approximation of experimental data in the framework of the model presented.

[Traumatic dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus--is a rehabilitation possible?].

BACKGROUND: The complete traumatic dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus after orbital floor fractures is a very rare event. It results from direct transmission of a traumatic force which impinges the orbital frame or may result from an increasing pressure to the orbital contents. Diplopia or evidence of a displaced globe necessitates an exploration and reconstruction of the orbital floor. CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of a blunt injury to the orbital region caused by a machine for planing timber. On examination the patient had a massive righ…
