The role of syphilis self-testing as an additional syphilis testing approach in key populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is causing epidemics in many countries. Syphilis self-testing (SST) has potential to increase testing and treatment coverage in the same manner as documented for self-testing of, for example, HIV, hepatitis C virus, and COVID-19. We aimed to synthesise current evidence on the utility of SST. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and, where possible, meta-analysis. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science for publications published from Jan 1, 2000, to Oct 13, 2022. We included publications with original data on any syphilis rapid tests, includin

Adolescent wellness. Facilitating compliance in social morbidities.

The establishment of a well adolescent schedule needs to be developed similar to the scheduled clinical visits in pediatric care. However, providing adolescent wellness visits without appropriate financial reimbursement for time expended and without increased provider training may make "well" adolescent visits an unrealistic expectation. However, two major trends will significantly impact on the future of adolescent health care. These include a sharp increase in numbers of adolescents beginning in 1990 and the poverty within the adolescent population. These data suggest that obstacles, whether

Antenatal Ultrasound Utilization and Associated Factors Among Postpartum Women in Durame Town Public Health Institutions, Central Ethiopia: A Facility-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal ultrasound scanning is a fundamental component of antenatal care across the globe. It is of significant public health importance because it enables early detection of fetal abnormalities, monitors fetal growth and maternal health, informs timely medical interventions, and supports strategies to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Despite its clinical importance, there are limited studies on the use of antenatal ultrasound in developing countries, including Ethiopia. OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at assessing the antenatal ultrasound utilization and ass

Cancer CARE (Connected Access and Remote Expertise) Beyond Walls - Safety, Feasibility, and Patient Experience of Home-Based Chemotherapy.

As patients live longer with cancer, traditional treatment models centered around hospitals and infusion centers increasingly burden patients, caregivers, and health care systems alike. These burdens are logistical, financial, and emotional, and they are especially profound for older adults and individuals in rural or underserved areas, who face added challenges in accessing centralized care. To address these growing inequities and systemic pressures, Mayo Clinic piloted an innovative model of home-based chemotherapy through its Cancer CARE (Connected Access and Remote Expertise) Beyond Walls

The Global Epilepsy Needs Study (GENS): A mixed-methods, multi-country exploration of the unmet psychosocial and everyday needs of people with epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: While epilepsy research has largely focused on medical management and clinical outcomes, less attention has been given to the unmet psychosocial and everyday needs of people with epilepsy (PWE), particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The Global Epilepsy Needs Study (GENS) aims to explore these needs, which are integral to the quality of life, by capturing both shared and context-specific experiences. METHODS: The GENS employed a patient-centered approach and mixed-methods design, integrating a cross-sectional survey and semi-structured interviews in 15 countries. The sur

Knowledge and Awareness of Glaucoma: A Comparative Study Among Rural and Urban Patients in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and often progresses silently until significant vision loss occurs. Early detection and timely treatment are crucial to preventing visual impairment; however, these efforts largely depend on public awareness. Assessing glaucoma-related knowledge, particularly among underserved populations, is therefore essential for developing effective prevention and control strategies. This study aimed to assess and compare the level of knowledge and awareness of glaucoma among rural and urban patients. METHODOLOGY: This comparative

Combatting malaria together: key findings from a rapid formative assessment on Royal Thai Army malaria practices and military-civilian collaboration in Sisaket Province, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: In the Greater Mekong Subregion, militaries constitute a critical but often underserved malaria transmission reservoir, given their high mobility, deployment to endemic areas, and frequent exposure to vectors. In Thailand, the Royal Thai Army (RTA) is a key risk population, yet their malaria practices, perceptions, and the scale and scope of coordination with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) are not well understood. A joint military-civilian research team conducted a rapid formative assessment in Sisaket Province, a persistent transmission hotspot, to characterize the unique RT

The Impact of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Canada 2018: Direct Costs and Health Services Utilization.

UNLABELLED: Direct health care costs of illness reflect the costs of medically necessary services and treatments paid for by public and private payers, including hospital-based care, outpatient physician consultations, prescription medications, diagnostic testing, complex continuing care, and home care. The costs of caring for persons with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been rising well above inflation over the past fifteen years in Canada, largely due to the introduction and penetration of expensive biologic therapies. Changing paradigms of care toward frequent patient monitoring and a
