Episodic memory in former professional football players with a history of concussion: an event-related functional neuroimaging study.

Previous research has demonstrated that sport-related concussions can have short-term effects on cognitive processes, but the long-term consequences are less understood and warrant more research. This study was the first to use event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine long-term differences in neural activity during memory tasks in former athletes who have sustained multiple sport-related concussions. In an event-related fMRI study, former football players reporting multiple sport-related concussions (i.e., three or more) were compared with players who reported fewe

Remote spatial memory deficits in mouse models of neuropsychiatric disorders with immature dentate gyrus phenotype.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) is a critical region that contributes to recent and remote memory. Granule cells within this region, in which adult neurogenesis occurs, undergo dynamic and reversible maturation via genetic and environmental factors during adulthood. A pseudo-immature state of DG granule cells, called immature DG (iDG), has been observed in the adult mice of certain mutant strains, which are considered animal models of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, such as intellectual disability, schizophrenia, autism, and Alzheimer's disease. However, the as

Post-conditioning sleep deprivation facilitates delay and trace fear memory extinction.

Trace and delay auditory fear conditioning involve different memory association strategies based on working memory involvement; however, their differences in long-term processing through sleep and extinction training remain unclear. While females often exhibit more persistent fear, complicating psychiatric treatment, most studies have primarily focused on how sleep affects initial recall in male mice. We investigated the three-way interaction between tests (trace vs. delay), sleep states, and sex during initial recall, extinction, and post-extinction remote recall. A six-hour post-conditioning

The long-term effect of perinatal asphyxia on hippocampal volumes.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in term-born infants can lead to memory problems. The hippocampus is important for long-term episodic memory. The primary aim was to investigate the effect of HIE on hippocampal volumes in 9- to 10-year-old children. The secondary aim was to investigate the association between hippocampal volumes and previously found impaired memory and cognitive functions in the current cohort. METHODS: In total 26 children with mild HIE, 26 with moderate HIE, and 37 controls were included. The intelligence quotient (IQ) and memory were tested. A 3D-volumetri

UBE2F impedes CD8 T cell memory.

Long-term maintenance of immune memory is critical for the control of recurring virus infections and cancer. In this issue of JEM, Ma et al. (https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20252687) report that the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme UBE2F restrains long-term CD8 T cell memory.

Proteins or RNA synthesis inhibitors suppressed induction of amnesia developing under impairment of memory reconsolidation by serotonin receptors antagonist.

Studies have shown that retrieval of long-term memory can cause memory reconsolidation, and impaired reconsolidation leads to amnesia development. However, the mechanisms of amnesia induction due to impaired memory reconsolidation remains poorly described. Using experiments involving grape snails trained to conditioned food aversion, we studied the role of translation and transcription processes and the role of serotonin receptors in the mechanisms of amnesia induction. We found that administration of a serotonin receptor antagonist or a protein synthesis inhibitor before the administration of

Corticosterone-induced enhancement of memory and synaptic Arc protein in the medial prefrontal cortex.

Acute administration of the stress hormone corticosterone enhances memory consolidation in a manner that is dependent upon the modulatory effects of the basolateral complex of the amygdala (BLA). Posttraining administration of corticosterone increases expression of the activity-regulated cytoskeletal-associated protein (Arc) in hippocampal synaptic-enriched fractions. Interference with hippocampal Arc expression impairs memory, suggesting that the corticosterone-induced increase in hippocampal Arc plays a role in the memory enhancing effect of the hormone. Blockade of β-adrenoceptors in the BL

An inhibitor of DNA recombination blocks memory consolidation, but not reconsolidation, in context fear conditioning.

Genomic recombination requires cutting, processing, and rejoining of DNA by endonucleases, polymerases, and ligases, among other factors. We have proposed that DNA recombination mechanisms may contribute to long-term memory (LTM) formation in the brain. Our previous studies with the nucleoside analog 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine triphosphate (ara-CTP), a known inhibitor of DNA ligases and polymerases, showed that this agent blocked consolidation of conditioned taste aversion without interfering with short-term memory (STM). However, because polymerases and ligases are also essential for D

Noradrenaline release in the locus coeruleus modulates memory formation and consolidation; roles for α- and β-adrenergic receptors.

Noradrenaline, essential for the modulation of memory, is released in various parts of the brain from nerve terminals controlled by the locus coeruleus (LoC). Noradrenaline release consequent upon input from higher brain areas also occurs within the LoC itself. We examined the effect of noradrenaline on adrenergic receptors in the LoC on memory processing, using colored bead discrimination learning in the young domestic chick. We have shown previously that the release of noradrenaline in the hippocampus and cortex (mesopallium) is essential for acquisition and consolidation of short-term to in

Psychopathology mediates between maltreatment and memory functioning in Burundian refugee youth.

BACKGROUND: The detrimental impact of child maltreatment on children and adolescents' academic achievement and later socioeconomic wellbeing is well known. However, it is still unclear (1) whether maltreatment is actually linked to youth's long- and short-term memory deficits and (2) whether potential impairments are due to maltreatment per se or related psychopathology. OBJECTIVE: Based on the Attentional Control Theory, we investigated a mediational model in which maltreatment would be related to psychopathology (internalizing symptoms, posttraumatic stress symptoms, posttraumatic cognition

The dynamic impairment of synaptic transmission in the PCx-IL engram circuit contributes to early olfactory memory decline in Alzheimer's disease.

Olfactory dysfunction has emerged as a promising target for the early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the mechanisms underlying neural circuit disruption associated with olfactory dysfunction in AD remain poorly understood. We conducted single-cell RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and ex vivo electrophysiological studies to determine the link between olfactory memory in AD and dynamic synaptic transmission disorders in PCx-IL engram cell circuits. Clinical functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data revealed that connectivity between the piriform cortex (PCx) and th

Safety Signals Enable Single-Session Active Avoidance Paradigm and Expose Threat Generalization in Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

Animals must flexibly discriminate between threat and nonthreat to deploy adaptive defensive strategies. We introduce a single-session differential signaled active avoidance paradigm that temporally dissociates acquisition, consolidation, and retrieval of instrumental avoidance memory. Interleaving a behaviorally noncontingent neutral cue (CS-) with a threat-predictive, behaviorally contingent cue (CS+) enhanced long-term memory without altering acquisition, demonstrating that differential contingency structure selectively reinforces memory consolidation rather than influencing learning perfor

Well-designed manufacturing work improves some cognitive abilities in individuals with cognitive impairments.

INTRODUCTION: Employment is recognized as a fundamental human right, which correlates with better physical and mental health. Importantly, well-designed work, which considers the physical, social, and psychological impacts of work, can serve to enhance the cognitive abilities of workers. Although often overlooked, work for individuals with disabilities, including cognitive impairments, is equally important for their physical and mental well-being. What has not been established, however, is whether well-designed work can also enhance the cognitive abilities of individuals with cognitive impairm

Meaningful Memory in Acute Anorexia Nervosa Patients-Comparing Recall, Learning, and Recognition of Semantically Related and Semantically Unrelated Word Stimuli.

OBJECTIVE: It is unclear whether observed memory impairment in anorexia nervosa (AN) depends on the semantic structure (categorized words) of material to be encoded. We aimed to investigate the processing of semantically related information in AN. METHOD: Memory performance was assessed in a recall, learning, and recognition test in 27 adult women with AN (19 restricting, 8 binge-eating/purging subtype; average disease duration: 9.32 years) and 30 healthy controls using an extended version of the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, applying semantically related and unrelated word stimuli. Objective memory as an indicator of functional impairment in native Spanish-speaking patients with HIV infection.

Objective memory is one of the most affected cognitive areas in patients with HIV and perhaps one of the best predictors of daily functioning problems. Its relationship with biological markers, mood symptoms, and cognitive complaint is unclear and has received little attention in native Spanish-speakers. The goal of this study is to explore the relationships between the above-mentioned variables and their prediction of objective memory performance in native Spanish-speakers. HIV-related biological markers, mood symptoms, cognitive complaint, and objective memory were assessed in a sample nativ

Accelerated long-term forgetting in presymptomatic autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Tests sensitive to presymptomatic changes in Alzheimer's disease could be valuable for clinical trials. Accelerated long-term forgetting-during which memory impairment becomes apparent over longer periods than usually assessed, despite normal performance on standard cognitive testing-has been identified in other temporal lobe disorders. We assessed whether accelerated long-term forgetting is a feature of presymptomatic autosomal dominant (familial) Alzheimer's disease, and whether there is an association between accelerated long-term forgetting and early subjective memory changes.

Temporal Context Reinstatement Drives Episodic-Like Order Memory in Long-Context Language Models.

Human episodic memory supports the retrieval of experiences that unfold over extended timescales, yet the computational mechanisms underlying this ability remain debated due to the limited mechanistic accessibility in long-term memory experiments in humans. Long-context LLMs may offer promising ways to reveal plausible computational mechanisms that drive this type of retrieval. Here, we investigate whether and how LLMs capture the core behavioral signatures of episodic memory via a temporal order memory task. Using a new dataset of human behavior based on memory of a full-length novel, we show

Memory systems: The case of phonological short-term memory. A festschrift for Cognitive Neuropsychology.

Developments in the understanding of the neurological and functional architectures of phonological short-term memory that took place in the 1984-2004 time period are reviewed. Phonological short-term memory is discussed as a case that illustrates a number of issues shared by other research domains in cognitive neuropsychology, with particular reference to memory systems. Modularity: Phonological short-term memory includes two main components, an input storage system (the phonological short-term store), and an output rehearsal process. These components are functionally connected with other verb

Toward Sensor Fusion Neuromuscular Interface for Continuous Finger Joint Angle Estimation via Deep Transfer Learning.

Accurate decoding of motor intent from biosignals is an important step toward intuitive upper-limb prosthetic-control interfaces. We propose a novel high-dimensional multimodal deep learning framework that fuses surface electromyography (sEMG) and B-mode ultrasound (US) images to estimate metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joint angles continuously. The framework employs a shared Encoder-Decoder-Regression architecture integrating convolutional neural networks (CNNs), transposed convolutions, an action-conditioned multi-head cross-attention module (ATT) that uses the commanded ac
