Nociceptive and sympathetic innervations in the abaxial part of the cranial horn of the equine medial meniscus: an immunohistochemical approach.

In athletic horses, diseases leading to lameness are of great importance due to the loss of performance and the resultant economic concerns. … s involved in meniscal nociception in five macroscopically sound cranial horns of the equine medial meniscus, which has been one of the most common sites reported for equine meniscal injuries. Immunohistochemical stainings were performed using antibodies against Substance P in order to identify nociceptive fibres; against tyrosine hydroxylase for detecting …

Autologous Bone Marrow Concentrate in a Sheep Model of Osteoarthritis: New Perspectives for Cartilage and Meniscus Repair.

INTRODUCTION: Cell-based therapies are becoming a valuable tool to treat osteoarthritis (OA). This study investigated and compared the regen … inhibiting OA progression compared to MSC-HA, leading to a reduction of inflammation in cartilage, meniscus, and synovium. Indeed, the decrease of inflammation positively contributed to counteract the progression of fibrotic and hypertrophic processes, known to be involved in tissue failure. Moreover, the treatment with BMC-HA showed the best results in a …

The utility of the radiographic condylar cut-off sign in children and adolescents with complete discoid lateral meniscus.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of the radiographic 'condylar cut-off sign' to detect the presence of a complete discoid lateral meniscus in children and adolescents. METHODS: The radiographs of 166 subjects younger than 17 with complete discoid lateral meniscus as well as 153 age- and sex-matched subjects with normal meniscus were reviewed. The condylar cut-off sign, judged by the prominence ratio of the medial and lateral femoral condyles in tunnel view radiographs, was assessed. The prominence ratio was compared between the complete discoid and the normal gr…

Hidden lesions of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus: a systematic arthroscopic exploration of the concealed portion of the knee.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are frequently associated with meniscal lesions. Despite improvements in meniscal repair techniques, failure rates remain significant, especially for the posterior horn of the medial meniscus. PURPOSE: To determine whether a systematic arthroscopic exploration of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus with an additional posteromedial portal is useful to identify otherwise unrecognized lesions. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: In a consecutive series of 302 ACL reconstructions, a systematic arthroscopic exploratio…

Relationship of age and body mass index to the expression of obesity and osteoarthritis-related genes in human meniscus.

OBJECTIVE: Aging and obesity contribute to the initiation and progression of osteoarthritis with little information on their relation to gene expression in joint tissues, particularly the meniscus. Here, we test the hypothesis that patient age and body mass index (BMI) correlate with the expression of osteoarthritis- and obesity-related gene signatures in the meniscus. DESIGN: Meniscus was obtained from patients (N=68) undergoing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. The mRNA expression of 24 osteoarthritis-related and 4 obesity-related genes in meniscus was assessed by quantitative real-time PC…

Effect of medial meniscus tear and partial meniscectomy on balancing capacity in response to sudden unidirectional perturbation.

Medial meniscus tears and medial partial meniscectomies can damage or remove mechanoreceptors in the meniscus; this inevitably affects knee joint proprioception. Few studies have addressed this subject and none has examined balance in response to sudden perturbation, which requires complex coordination. This study investigated changes in balance in response to sudden unidirectional perturbations after a medial meniscus tear and medial partial meniscectomy in the 3rd and 12th postoperative months. We compared balancing capacity after sudden unidirectional (horizontal) perturbation in 20 control…

Characteristic shape of the lateral femoral condyle in patients with osteochondritis dissecans accompanied by a discoid lateral meniscus.

BACKGROUND: There are various indirect signs of a discoid lateral meniscus in radiographs, for example lateral joint space widening, hypoplasia of the LFC, etc. There has, however, been no previous report of the characteristic shape of the lateral femoral condyle (LFC) in patients with osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) accompanied by a discoid lateral meniscus. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristic shape of the LFC in patients with OCD accompanied by a discoid lateral meniscus, and sex differences associated with the shape of the LFC in those patients. METHODS: This study…

Application of tear meniscus measurement by anterior segment optical coherence tomography in the diagnosis of dry eye.

Dry eye, one of the most frequent ocular surface diseases, is caused by complex ocular function and mechanism disorders. Currently, no uniform standard diagnosis of dry eye has been established. Traditional clinical examinations provide inaccurate measurement and poor reproducibility due to various factors. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) is applicable in the diagnosis of dry eye due to its high resolution, non-invasiveness, good accuracy, and repeatability.

Bilateral incomplete discoid lateral meniscus in a 14 weeks fetus: a case report and review of literature.

Discoid lateral meniscus is a rare condition that unilateral is more common than bilateral, here we report a case of bilateral discoid lateral meniscus which was observed in the knee joints of a female fetal cadaver of 14 weeks gestation (92 mm crown-rump length). It was an incomplete type of discoid meniscus, occupying about three fourth of the tibial plateau area. The embryological basis of this anomaly is discussed with emphasize on its clinical implications. This finding support the opinion that discoid lateral meniscus as a true congenital malformation that is not found in normal developm…

Tibial avulsion fracture of the posterior root of the medial meniscus in a skeletally-immature child - a case report.

It has been theorized that a traumatic tibial avulsion fracture of the posterior root of the medial meniscus (MM) is the cause of the so-called meniscus ossicle (MO). We report the delayed appearance of a tibial avulsion fracture of the posterior root of the MM after a valgus, twisting injury in a 12-year-old boy with open physes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans performed 3 days after the injury did not demonstrate a definitive tibial avulsion fracture of the posterior root of the MM; whereas, a repeat MRI for 3 months post-injury did. Medial extrusion of the MM was also noted on the 3 …

The first metatarsophalangeal joint meniscus and its relation to hallux valgus deformity--an anatomical and clinical study.

BACKGROUND: This study describes the anatomy and incidence of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint meniscus, a structure not mentioned before in literature. METHODS: An anatomical cadaver study on 102 feet was performed with special attention to the first MTP joint anatomy. These results were compared with the per-operative findings in a clinical prospective study on 100 consecutive hallux valgus surgeries. RESULTS: On cadavers this meniscus is more common in patients with hallux valgus. Clinically, in patients with a mild hallux valgus the meniscus is found in more than half of cases during …

Conservative treatment for a symptomatic solitary ganglion cyst of the anterior meniscus invading into the infrapatellar fat pad.

Symptomatic meniscal cysts without accompanying meniscal tears are uncommon, especially those which are formed from the anterior meniscus and invading into the infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP). The current recommended treatment for such cysts is excision through open method or arthroscopy. To our knowledge, this is the first case study about a symptomatic solitary meniscal cyst invading the IPFP that was successfully treated with needle aspiration and steroid injection after arthroscopic treatment of the associated disorders. In this paper, similar cases are also reviewed to discuss the treatment …

Arthroscopic repair for a flap tear of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus adjacent to its tibial insertion.

A flap tear of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus adjacent to its tibial insertion combined with acute rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament was successfully repaired arthroscopically by a combination of advancement of the tip of the flap into a drill hole created in the tibia and an inside-out stacked suture technique using Henning instrumentation in two cases. However, the long-term function of the repaired menisci, which was reduced several millimeters in circumferential length, is still unknown.

Biomechanical impact of discoid lateral meniscus and partial meniscectomy in the pediatric knee: a finite element study.

Three-dimensional models have been widely used to study knee joint biomechanics in both healthy and pathological conditions. However, the lack of data on pediatric knee models affected by a discoid lateral meniscus necessitates further investigation. This study analyzed the biomechanical behavior of a pediatric knee joint with a discoid lateral meniscus malformation and the effects of partial meniscectomy on restoring its normal configuration. The three-dimensional geometry was reconstructed from computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging data to develop a finite element model of the p…
